Final Fantasy XV Demo Previews/Impressions Thread

Since you can customize the car, I hope there is the possibility to make it look like a carriage to make those who complain about the modern design aspects shut up

Versus XIII was always meant to throw back to the older FF games. Where you all been?
It's painfully obvious how many people didn't follow versus and only showed "concern" at the re-reveal. The best part about the last two years is how the E3 2013 re-reveal was met with "omg, stop trying to be Uncharted! Where is the grass and wildlife?!" and now SE doubles down on showing off the exploration, and now I see, "Jeez, stop trying to be a generic WRPG! Where are the set pieces?!"

Dissenters have the attention span of goldfish.

Does anybody know what the general consensus among Japanese gamers is on the character designs, like, are there so many "lol, gay (k-pop) boyband" comments, too, or are they seen as not that unusual over there, anyway? Though it's mostly male hosts that look like that, so the Japanese mainstream could still perceive these metrosexual looks as "uncommon", no?
Do Japanese call J-Pop Pop?

Noo, but cars... and... and... grass fields... and they're wearing BLACK!

Man was just reading this thread again: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=899912 ...really funny to me now.
Never before has a poor choice of words/mistranslation caused so much concern, lol. Considering how complicated the combat mechanics are (we haven't even seen gambits yet) and how quickly ever has been getting party wiped in the demo, that thread was a bunch of worry for nothing.

Not to mention "core-centric" and "casual" mentioned in the same breathe is an oxymoron.

Good question, dunno :D German rap is called Deutschrap over here.

Something that bothers me is how many hardcore gamers mistake "streamlined" with "shallow". Reducing obfuscation doesn't make a game easier or, let's say, simpler, just less redundant or repetetive.

How can folks complaign about casuals with ff? That's like a kirby fan complaing about a game not beinng hardcore.FF is a ball of fluff.

As much as I actually enjoyed XIII and its world, I still don't understand how the hell the geography of Cocoon works.

Does every city have its own artificial sky and gravity? I know that at least Nautilus appears to.
How is it that you almost always have a clear and unobstructed view of sky from anywhere within Cocoon?

Toriyama(regarding how Cocoon works): "In FFXIII, it just does! FFXIII characters like Lightning and Snow can accept it, why can't you?"

I don't know how many times I've had to quote Nomura regarding "traditional aspects" he wanted Versus(yeah, back when it was Versus) to include. And even NOW, some people just don't get it. It doesn't register for shit. Really, this world(FFXV's), seems to be the closest you'd get to having a traditional FF world that was "sped up" to meet a modern setting, while acknowledging that the world is INDEED old and remnants of the old world still exist(and roam it).

Yeah, that's why the "classic turn-based FFs were so much more strategic, this action crap is just button-mashing" folks are so annoying. I always have to explain that you can basically survive 95% of non-boss battles in FFs with just mashing "Attack" plus some occasional healing.
I mean, I loved those battle systems, too, back in the days but for me the main draw of the series were the stories, settings, atmosphere, music, etc.

Yeah, but Japanese boy band! I think I might be the first person who ever pointed that out too!

/s

I always found it funny the first thing people thing about regarding "handsome guys in a group" is Japanese boy band. Just from a historic perspective, that's been done WAY before j-pop/rock band popularity. Hell, not the first, but when I hear of "prettyboy group"(maybe showing my age), I think of Duran Duran:

OMG, attractive men with pretty hair, wearing stylish clothing.... NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The West has(or at least HAD, as we've seem to take up the idea that we've become "better than that" with shifting of decade trends, which I still believe is horseshit if you have to tell yourself that) pretty boys too.

It's the inside of a Dyson Sphere. The stars in the sky are lights from a city on the other side.

Weird, I thought "German rap" just referred to the language the song was in.

So maybe J-Pop is called J-Pop in Japan =X

With rap over here it might be the case of wanting to consciously differentiate or emphasize the national scene compared to US rap that only in the recent years lost its relevance but was king for most of the 90's and early naughts. You also have to consider that Rap is very meta and many rappers rap about rap, so that's probably also why we use Deutschrap as a special label.

Haha, talking about German rap in a FFXV thread. Wait, what if you could listen to the radio while driving and they had a Hip-Hop channel!?
"lol, gta fantasy"
Jokes aside, you think there'll be a radio (especially now that we know that there are only ambient sounds instead of a looped song on the overworld)?

If you want to get very technical, the thickness of the significant part of Earth's atmosphere which gives it the blue tint (to our visible spectrum) is ~200km. Cocoon is 'the size of USA' which is in a similar ballpark to the moon, e.g. 1700km++. there's plenty of internal space for an atmosphere layer dense enough to exhibit the same blue sky given an energy source in the center analogous in visual spectrum to the sun. In certain locations you can see that off to the horizon, there is ground visible curving upwards and gradually tinting blue, which I think would be a pretty accurate portrayal should something like this exist in real-world physics.

What irks me (and I've gone over this in great detail before) is the comparative sizes of Pulse and Cocoon, which according to canon is supposed to be earth and moon sized. When Cocoon is in the air, the perspective and relative sizes makes sense (Cocoon appears to be moon-sized)

Yet when the party falls from Cocoon to Pulse, it takes under a minute. Not to mention in the sequels, when Cocoon is suspended by the pillar, it appears much, MUCH smaller than implied by a moon-sized object about a diameter away from the Earth.

Okay, found this from an interview with Tabata:
"– As for sleeping, there was also a scene where Noctis was sleeping in a car, does that count? (Laughs)

Tabata: That’s ultimately just an idle action. (Laughs) You end up driving around in the car for long periods of time, so in order to give it a natural feel of traveling with friends, there are idle actions with a lot of variations being prepared. We heard a lot of requests from overseas fans about wanting a radio or jukebox type of element, but I think that’s something we’ll investigate later on."

FFVIII and FFXV are definitely kindred spirits. I agree whokeheartedly, but I think, at least at the time, VIII was the one XIII most closely resembled. I think it still is, but as we know it's largely an outlier.

Yeah, the XV cast looks too much like a boy band, they don't make characters like they used to like in FF8 where we have attractive men with stylish hair, but they had DIFFERENT clothing styles that visually show their personalities!

XIII always seemed like an even more sci-fi version of FFX to me.

It can't be helped that the reference is being made, considering the designs of the characters. Not that I mind how they look. I've seen worse designs in my rpgs and Final Fantasies.

I saw it mentioned in a few of the demo previews. It was really obnoxious to read, actually.

I don't find the comparison to pop that offensive. I mean, these are fantasy boys. The other place you see that is pop.

Huh, never thought of it that way. Makes sense. It also sounds cooler =X

As for the question, I guess you found the answer.

I do think we'll see something like that at least, even if it's not a game mechanic of changing radio stations and stuff.

It's not a recent thing either. I felt like it really escalated since TGS, ever since the road trip statement came out. (ignoring the largely forgotten Nomura one years back)

I like the FFXV cast, but man: I really, really hope there will be other party members as well, even though I know they declined. Different party members being able to cook different dishes for example (because they are from a different background or something), different party members fighting with other styles and so on.

I think they're similiar in that they both feel like their own thing, but one does so excellently and the other does it terribly.

What we see of Zanarkand is probably very similiar to FFXIII. The Asian stylings of modern Spira don't compsre to any other world in the series so far though.

I hope they license ~50 country songs from US Top 40. Just so that 1) you get jukebox that's 100% fitting with the gas station setting 2) licenses expire in 20 years and shit has to get yanked from the game because community's reaction is always hilarious when that happens.

You guys asked for it.

edit: that list better include My Hands or no sale

Seriously though, the j-pop boy band comments were maybe funny back in 2013 but now it's just getting old and annoying.

Well, those comments will obviously never stop. Everybody will think he's the first one to make this joke. I don't care as much anymore but I have to admit that the fanboy in me was annoyed quite a bit when people started making fun of it around the E3 and TGS re-reveals^^ Though, I don't exactly like most of the clothes designs either, to be honest (most of the old ones were better, except for Noctis (!)). I love that all black, Mafia dress code thing, however.
I only still sometimes feel the need to defend it if people say ignorant stuff like I mentioned a few posts back ("lol, cars", "no real FF", etc.). But we have the perfect image as a response now :P Pictures say more than a thousand words.

They both definitely have the most "alien"-looking worlds in the whole series. It's like when that guy said about how FFXV looks too "modern" and how stark a contrast it is with the fantasy creatures. THAT stuff really has been the "norm" regarding the FF series. The majority of the series has had worlds that were, generally, earth-like. FFX's Spira and FFXIII's Cocoon/Gran Pulse never felt that way to me.

They said that Noctis, Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto will be the MAIN PARTY, but they never said anything regarding guest characters. Most FFs have had guest characters(especially the modern ones) for certain portions of the game. Not permanent, sure, but still a cool possibility.

After watching Prasert's presentation on how much effort is put into each of the 3 supporting characters to make them behave differently yet have meaningful, believable interaction with Noctis in and out of combat (heck, Pacman's ghosts are actually a valid analogy here) I'm going to be very genuinely surprised if the guest characters have anything close to the same level of attention to detail.

I think a more apt analogy for the guest characters in FFXV would be how people 'tag along' in FFIII DS, which results in a bonus during combat, rather than temporarily-yet-fully-functional playable characters a-la Sephiroth in FFVII, Laguna trio in FFVIII etc.
