GTA V PC Performance Thread

I do like what PCSS is trying to do, and it looks great at times, but this is the second game where I've passed on it because it seems really buggy. In FC4 PCSS is really wacky sometimes, and its the same in GTA V, and it also is a decent performance hit in both titles (5-10 fps in GTA V).

AC Unity has the best shadows ive ever seen when using pcss + txaa. zero shadow aliasing or shimmer.

PCSS looks great in this game but the performance hit sometimes makes it not practical to me. I'll settle down with "softer" shadow options, looks good and is light on the hardware.

Just driving around the city? I have a 780 too and can pretty much max out nearly everything at 1920x1080 with 2x msaa + txaa and still get 60fps most of the time (no high res shadows though). Outside the city is where I have problems though

I got framerate dips to 3fps once. I can't put most of it on maximum. I wonder what the optimal settings are for a GTX 780 with i5 processor and 16GB of RAM.

Cross-posting from the OT, don't think I have the latest patch yet.

Is Post FX meant to have a larger performance impact on ultra compared to very high? Because I just tested now, and there's a negligible difference. I'm wondering if the first patch made the two settings the same, which would explain why very high runs worse for me than before.

Restart Steam.

Restart Steam.

Did that, no download. Is the latest build 335.1? If so, it probably downloaded before at some point and disappeared.

Anyway, I'm almost certain that they borked the Post FX setting and accidentally substituted the Very High settings with Ultra settings, which would explain why a bunch of people saw performance drops after the first patch. Can anyone else compare the performance difference between very high and ultra Post FX? Just park a car facing towards Trevor's garage at night, with the headlights at full beam. And try activating the radio wheel (the DOF causes a big drop in intensive situations).

what are the setttings that have the biggest hit on performance but lowest hit on looks? I'm guessing turning down AO, shadows and tesselation, but anything else?

3570k and GTX970 at 1080p here. Looking for either a stable 60fps or a gorgeous stable 30fps (would like to try both to see which I prefer)

Any way to get rid of that damn shadow square around the characters ?

And I still don't understand what the advanced graphic options are supposed to change, except for High Res shadows

I wanted to see just how good this game looked with everything maxed at 1080p (with 2x MSAA) so I locked it to 30fps, my god, this might be the best looking game I've ever seen.

I tried 4x MSAA but I started getting dips to 27fps from a rock solid 30 so our it back to 2x.

Current update delivers a smoother experience over my rig, wasn't expecting too much since the CPU is bottlenecking but with the update it runs way more better and smooth at high and very high settings now. 1080p/45fps MSAA x2

Haven't noticed any performance improvements since the patch but I don't run FRAPS anymore and I don't give too many fucks since it runs brillantly.

Just tried this and it does look good but 30fps looks strange to me now, struggling to believe that this is what it looked like on ps4

I hear you. 30fps is anything but unplayable (which I would consider hyperbole) but it's clear to me that 60fps is a game changer for this game as it is in so many releases.

Evolve is another immediate example springing to mind, multiplayer/fast-paced shooter at 30fps ? No thank you.
It's amazing at 60fps.

Yep, I had to turn FRAPS off so I could quit looking at a damn number and just enjoy the game. I did play the PC version and PS4 version side by side last night and the transition back to 30fps is jarring.

PS4 is 30fps?

Could someone kindly tell me where pictures taken with the camera phone go on PC? I have the retail version, so I can't just take screenshots through Steam.

Yeah this has definitely opened my eyes up. Playing this at 60fps with settings on very high settings has made building my PC last month 100% worth it

I just max out the extended shadow distance slider but I'm not seeing any difference. What does this do exactly?

I want to say it draws shadows on objects further away.

C:\Users\<Your username>\MyDocuments\Rockstar Games\GTA V\Profiles\<8-character string>\ and are named in the format PGTA5<9-digit number> (no file extension).

Also only photoshop and ifranview can open them apparently (I tried photoshop and it worked with that)

The game only saves them as 960x536 JPEGs btw.

Info taken from here http://gtaforums.com/topic/785078-snapmatic-shots/

The fuck?! Looks like I'm gonna have to use Fraps or something instead. Thanks homie.

I really hope you're right, if that crash were fixed then the game would pretty much be performing perfectly on my end.

For those of you who are bothered by the aliasing on the mini-map, you can turn on Nvidia driver FXAA (I'm guessing that AMD's MLAA would work similarly) and it will get rid of those jaggies. The downside is that it won't show up in screenshots unless you're in (borderless) windowed mode and then take a print screen.

Though now that I'm thinking about it, you could probably achieve the same effect by using ReShade or SweetFX. Plenty of options for those who want to make the map look slightly better.

I'm not sure about this but using the nvidia driver FXAA may have also cleaned up some jaggies better than the one in-game. There's still some but it seems much smoother than before.

I'm being told by a few friends that stuttering could be caused by HDD read speed.

Anyone else upgraded to SSD and play this yet?

Either way going out this weekend to buy 2 x 240gb SSDs

and gonna RAID the two drives I currently have in the machine.

Pretty much everyone in this thread is playing from an SSD.

I've got the game installed to a 7200RPM HDD and the only stutter I have is due to me using Raw Input for my mouse. If I change it to Directinput all the stuttering goes away.

Edit:

Can I run this on a i5 4690 with a 970 GTX on high, 1080p/60 or will experience some dips?

Same hardware here, I run the game at 40-60 fps in the countryside, usually a locked 60 in the city with these settings:

p5YOlQa.jpg

Vsync and AF are forced in the drivers. You'll be fine!

Surprisingly I can run maxed out "advanced distance scaling" and stay above 60 in all areas when I go for FXAA instead of MSAA. However, it does seem to add a bit of judder to the game, especially when driving fast. No real stuttering, just a bit of judder. Anyone else notice this? (I am running G-Sync with unlocked fps)

Quick question. I'm playing this game on my HDD. What's the quickest way to move this game onto my SSD without having to redownload/reinstall it? Steam Mover?

Copy the game folder from your HDD steam folder.
Paste the game folder to your SSD steam folder.
Uninstall the game.
Install the game, now selecting your SSD as install location.
Wait for Steam to recognize the data.
Done.

Do I need to have FXAA both in-game and in control panel on? Or just in Nvidia control panel?

Works for me with both enabled. I'm pretty sure control panel FXAA overrides the in-game setting. Also yeah, I get the same issue with the radar appearing jaggy in screenshots taken with Afterburner. But at least it's smoother in-game now, which is great.

Pretty pleased with MSI GTX 980 4G at 4K (DSR). With Advanced graphics off and AA off, and everything else maxed, I get a rock solid 30fps. VRAM maxed out within 93-97%.

Tweaked settings some more with my GTX 760, i5 3570k, and 8GB RAM. Maintains 60 FPS but can dip to 50 in the Paleto Bay Forest, lowest recorded for me was 49. Just be aware that Adaptive Vsync, FXAA, and AF 8x is on in the Nvidia control panel.

Got my new 8gigs of RAM in the mail yesterday. Haven't put it in yet. But I was playing last night and watching my committed system memory just creep up slowly but surely. Started around 7.8gigs committed and ended after an hour and a half at 9.7gigs committed. Near the end I was definitely getting some dips here and there. RAM related? Dunno.

Wondering if there's any good way to bench to show any differences. Probably not. It'll all be anecdotal. I can use FRAPs benchmark tool for 10 min before and after the RAM but I don't know if that would really show what I'm expecting the difference to be.

Either way, I'll probably throw the memory in tonight and see how it goes.

No patch notes right? I'm also curious about how they are labeling these patch numbers, the first was 1.01 but build 32x now it's build 351 and patch 1.02?

Lol! I'm running this off of a laptop hard drive in an enclosure via USB. Not a hitch ever.

Definitely feels more sluggish with it on, especially when i climbed to a high place.
I turned all the advanced options off, it's already a great experience that way, with a great framerate on top of it.

Cross posting from the OT.

Anyone else having crashes after the latest patch this morning?

I have had the game crash to desktop 3 times today. Once when I was doing the celebrity stalker sidequest as Trevor in the golf course, and now twice during the FIB armored van Heist. Every time I got a message on the Rockstar Social Club launcher that I was logged out because someone else had logged in using my account elsewhere. I thought my account might be compromised so I changed my password, yet I am still getting the crashes and same message.

Thanks for your feedback. I think I will just keep experimenting a bit more, it's half the fun for me anyway.

I found one of the posts having the same issue as you
No error messages. Just says that the program stopped working, then Social Club force logs me out and says that I was logged in from somewhere else. I haven't touched any page file settings yet though so I'm using whatever defaults windows 8 has.

I'll try running in compatibility windows 7 mode + with admin rights when I get the chance. Read about it just now in the pc gaming wiki site to help with the crashes.
