Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

I'd be Nike or Adidas Marketing Director, I'd want my shoes in this game.

Splatoon starts with a message on how the game might contain product placement.
Do we know if any deal has been signed already?

You haven't played RE4 on Wii have you? That worked beautifully.
I have, best version of the game by far, made me pass on RE5 because I couldn't go back to analog. But:

1) RE4 is behind the shoulder, not really 3rd person, so the "at what depth is the player aiming exactly" is much less an issue for Wiimote aiming, the game can "cheat" like Sin & Punishment 2 and act like you're in 1st person.

2) In RE4 you're shooting on targets, not on the scenery, the game even (smartly) notifies you with a slight rumble when your crosshair aims at something you're supposed to shoot. So the game knows exactly what should be the course of your projectile: from your gun to the identified target, there's no ambiguity.

But in Splatoon, you're firing at walls, on the floor, etc. so the game can't know where you want to shoot exactly with just character position + a crosshair. If you've played Epic Mickey, where you also don't always aim at a target specifically and paint the scenery with a crosshair while in 3rd person, you'll know what I mean: it's wonky. You get used to it, but the ink never really lands where you really want to aim spontaneously, it's messy and you have to correct all the time the wonky interpretation the game does of your intent. It's not that big of an issue in that game because it's slow and solo and you can deal with it, but in a competitive online shooter? Ouch.

Metroid Blast says hi!
True, I forgot about Metroid Blast, but again, this is a game where you shoot at things, not the scenery, the game can therefore deduce where you want to fire easily.
In Splatoon, though, if you aim a little to the right of your character, do you want to aim to the floor further away where your crosshair points to, or do you want to splash to the direct right of your character? Your crosshair doesn't point to a thing, but is a line from the camera to the crosshair, and you may aim at any point located in that (sometimes pretty long) line.

I get what you're saying, though I don't recall having any issue with Yoshi in Galaxy 2.
That's because the game again identifies your targets, there's even a circle appearing around enemies which your point to to notify the game "understands" that you're aiming at them. Try spitting shells at imaginary points, and witness the game not firing it where you want and Yoshi turning his neck in disturbing ways. Again, it's not a big issue in the game because it handles the camera and chooses viewpoints that limit the issue, and again, you're pointing at specific things, but if you point to a random point in the air or a wall or the floor, it's not precise at all. And Splatoon is all about that.

Then again, I read there's a local Wiimote + nunchuk option so maybe they coded something satisfying, but I doubt it works as well as gyro+analog or full dual analog.

Just ordered it! Should I play the SP to learn the ropes for MP, or is online a gentle entry point?
I'd suggest doing the first 1 or 2 levels of SP first, honestly to get used to the controls and stuff.

But jumping straight into multiplayer is possible too.

Really enyoing it so far. Some matches are really tough, though :D

The controls are really fluid after some short amount of getting used to.

Quick question: When playing Turf War: Does the cat only count horizontal areas? I'm always the one painting every wall, because i think it's cheap and unused space to cover for the final decision. But i'm not really sure, since the map camera is nearly completely focused on the ground area.

Walls don't count for turf covered. Only paint a wall for quicker movement.

Your teammates are screaming at you. Walls don't count. Only floors. The best way to tell is to look at the point counter when you shoot, it'll let you know if you're wasting your time or not. So this means ramps only count in certain points.

Someone help me. I just absolutely fucking suck at these controls. Both the motion controls and the stick controls. I don't know why. I've already played about 5 or 6 hours of the game, mostly with motion controls, and I'm having way too much trouble being accurate.

My brain understands the controls just fine, it's the accuracy that it so difficult for me. I feel like I have a decent grasp of the game in general, I almost always come in first place when I have the roller (which requires no accuracy). But as soon as I switch to any gun, I'm just absolute trash.

Does anyone have any advice? I feel like by now I should have the controls down. I've tried all different sensitivities. I don't know. Maybe I'm just not meant to wield a gun.

My Wii U keeps randomly shutting off while playing this game. Not even a freeze, it just turns off. Never seen this happen before. Anyone else?

Try standing up for a few rounds, and get used to literally aiming the gamepad, or go through single player with them.

I found motion controls a no no. Turned down the sensitivity with the controls and that seems to be helping my game out a lot.

:D

Well good thing i asked at the first day. Good tip with the point counter though, didn't really watch it in all the chaos. Thanks you two.

I'm going online with irregular intervals (weaving in and out of single player/stores) so feel free to add/play with me. If you haven't already added me from the spreadsheet my NNID is Geistbox.

Standing up... That's not a bad idea. So, do most people seem to play with motion controls? For whatever reason, I feel like the thumbstick option just blows. It doesn't feel like any other F/TPS I've ever play. It just... I don't know... Sucks.

I have no problem with other twin-stick F/TPS games, but Splatoon just feels awful when I try the classic controls. Maybe it's because the reticle is constantly changing position.

Apparently my BestBuy still had one of the 3pack amiibos in stock, and I'm a sucker for impulse buys.

Well, hey, if you don't want it (or don't need it after you unlock stuff), PM me and I'll absolutely buy it off of you.

Okay. Now that I have played all the modes I've made my mind that the lack of 2-player local online splitscreen (like in MK8 and Smash) is completely inexcusable. I'll soon start a thread to discuss it and see what the general consensus is.

I fucking hate the matchmaking in this game.Every single fucking time I use the charger I'm paired up with completely braindead morons that are unable to wipe their own asses if their life depended upon it... for crying out loud.

Pretty sure the problem is the performance. this game needs 60 fps

A quick extra note:

When Judd's "Zzzz" text is orange, that means the bonus is up. When it's grey, it's not up yet.

I need to correct myself; it's not a sign that the bonus is up, it's a sign that Judd's updated his message. That can mean a bonus, but I think he updates more frequently than that.

Motion off -4 sensitivity was my sweet spot

They probably couldn't keep the framerate considering the 1v1 mode is 30fps, so yeah that's a good excuse.

I don't personally have them, but in the back of the plaza is like a teleporter thing that's white and says Amiibo. I guess somewhere there :D

Teleporter? It's an amiibo box.

How are you tilting the Gamepad for the motion controls? You're supposed to 'turn' it left or right like a steering wheel to aim left or right. If you are tilting it like a seesaw like a lot of people do, then it won't work right.

Use the right stick for wide movements, and the gyro for precision movements when engaging an opponent.

I love this game but the controls suck :( feel like I'm battling them no matter what I do. Y axis too sensitive always vs the X when using sticks. But then with motion controls my head just can't wrap around stick for X motion for Y and I'm constantly correcting myself mid-battle. I'm about 3-4 hours in of play too... we need more control adjusting options.

For people that want to finetune what sensitivity you wanna play on, the weapon test chamber does allow you to change it on the fly.

I'd keep going with the gryo controls. they'll click and when they do it's glorious.

Such an odd game, it really is. Not from aesthetics standpoint , not music, not design, just the amount of content. 1 mode, 2 maps every four hours? I mean really. It reminds me of a ftp game. Order an item, come back tomorrow, what is this!?

But there really is something so fun about it. Everything that I've loved and missed about Japanese design is here. From the booming bright colours, the wacky j-rock music, the sheer fucking coolness of it all, I miss this Japan so much!

Pros & cons then

Pros

+Design, so fucking awesome how everything looks.
+Map design seems really tight
+Very satisfying mechanics, the combination of land and squid, inspired!

Cons

-Why no off screen play? The map really isn't that important. It could be condensed down to the small screen
-30fps plaza, why!?
-Motion controls, eat shit

it's 1 vs1 and you don't haave to paint the whole level. It's half the fps and the gamepad screen is even worse.
They could do something like Hyrule Warriors Local multiplayer and lower the textures/resolution a bit. It's always better than nothing

How would Inkstrike people select a zone to shoot? The map is vital for certain specials skills. They could do it like Call of Duty, sure, but this way I can move while selecting a zone to attack without leaving myself vulnerable to attack.
