Earthbound Beginnings |OT| From Onett to Podunk in 20 years!

I wonder if the translation is really exactly the same as the original localization, or if they cleaned up some things that would be inconsistencies...

HUGE SPOILERS
Giegue = Giygas, confirmed by Itoi some years ago. The character also has the same name in the Japanese version of the games.

I imagine they left it as is, but it'd be unbelievably cool if they did change it for the sake of consistency.

It's the exact same rom, The rom that leaked years ago was the finished english version.

I don't think anyone has enough information yet to confirm that, unless someone has speedrun the VC release and compared both. Specifically the thing I mentioned.

Nintendo tweaks many of their VC releases in a lot of small ways, sometimes inexplicably. I see no reason to assume it would be identical.

I... must have missed this announcement. Shit. Enjoyed the hell out of Earthbound. I played the "Mother 1+2" version But will give it another go.

im hijacking this thread to say LISA is $2.99 on Steam right now for the next 24 hours

it's basically a way darker sidescrolling Mother

I just purchased/downloaded this and got demolished by Wally. I think I might start by grinding my levels a bit. Thankfully, I enjoy doing that in my RPG's [yeah, I'm weird like that]. I'm really loving the music though, and I can already tell that the game is going to have a lot of charm. I'm so happy Nintendo decided to release this on the VC, after so many years.

Now, Mother 3 when? :)

And on the other hand, I'd like a Mysterious Murasame Castle release on Wii U...

I wish it were.

Recca Summer Carnival too, now that I think of it.

I think those are the only two that have stayed on the 3DS

Given that I only buy my NES games on the Wii U, I hope they come EVENTUALLY

(Note: there are some NES VC games that are on Wii U and not on the 3DS because there's 3D versions of them)

I too hope The Mysterious Murasame Castle, gets released for Wii U outside of Japan, we only got it on 3DS but they got both.

Will get it after work for sure, even though I've just began with EB (SNES), I love the mood, style and just everything of the series. Hopefully the release of EB:B will lead to Mother 3 getting officially released via VC!

Damn glad this game has made it to NA, finally. Though now that it's here, it does occupy an awkward space co-existing with EarthBound, seeing how EarthBound goes through similar story beats and does just about everything Beginnings does better than Beginnings. Anyone new the series is better off playing EarthBound first; Beginnings is for fans who want more of the EarthBound's distinct flavor. The Japanese were lucky to have the nostalgia of Mother 1 (and I don't mean just because it's an old game, Mother purposefully trades on the general sense of childhood nostalgia) and then have the straight game upgrade to Mother 2. We need to mentally prepare ourselves for an NES RPG and all that it entails, but Beginnings still has enough of its own quirks and charms (that music, as others noted, is superb) to be worth experiencing.

Now that it has finally arrived officially, I'm going to dedicate myself to finally completing the game. I've started and stopped several times before, getting as far as Snowman (Duncan's Factory is a hell of a hurdle), but now I'm finally going to go the distance so I can have the entire series under my belt.

Can confirm, LISA is a fine game that "gets it" regarding the balance of humor and heartbreak you see in the Mother series. If you played through Mother 3 and still have pieces of your heart that have yet to be completely rent and you want to complete the total shattering of your emotional core, LISA is for you.

I'm sure it'll happen eventually. Nintendo still has their drip-feed VC model. They have submissions and release dates for new VC games months in advance, and just go off that pre-defined schedule

Oh, I forgot that Ninja Gaiden II and III are available on 3DS and not Wii U. I also want those

Hey on the topic of what Mother 3 should be called if it comes out here (a sentence I can say now without derisive laughter) was the subtitle "Fall of the Pig King" attached to Earthbound 64 or Mother 3 (N64)?

I captured some footage. It's really rough as I didn't have the time to edit.
Man this game is rough. I don't think it's bad because I haven't played that much but the game itself has very delayed and kinda clunky controls.

It's a product of its time in some aspects, but also one far ahead of its times in many ways. A lot of people will enjoy it, even if they don't necessarily love retro gaming.

Satoshi Tajiri reviewed the game back in the day, before even founding Game Freak. Here's a translation. He is very critical and raises some excellent points, but it's also apparent the game has left an impression on him. Pokémon's design includes many elements you'd see in Mother, but not other RPGs of that time.

I hope people play the game for what it is. Limited by its technology, a thoroughly experimental and untested idea that laid the groundwork for EarthBound. It's kinda rough around the edges, but once you get past the fact that the game has essentially no predecessor in its school of storytelling, you'll appreciate it for all of its one-of-a-kind beauty.

The thing is, though,
it's no longer about the Fall of the Pig King, and he technically doesn't die, so the original subtitle is less applicable to the final product.

WHAT!?
It seems impossible to finally be able to play this game. Maybe Nintendo is really listening to us?
Well, now it's the perfect time to release Mother 3!

I hope that's their next move, but we'll see. I wouldn't expect it any time soon still.

Never played this game? Is it good? Seems GAF is so hyped by it...

It's good but VERY HARD!
Seriously.
If you ever played one of the NES Dragon Quests then you know how hard it is.
It's real grind fest.

But it's oh so good!

The reason GAF is hyped by it is because this game was never officially released in the west. It's intended US release was cancelled because it was close to or after the SNES release, so Nintendo didn't bother with it.
There is a prototype cartridge or two in circulation with a completely (or almost completely?) done English translation (from which the NES ROM was dumped many years ago), but you would have to pay upwards of $5k if you so desperately needed it.

With this game now finally being officially released in the west in English everybody can enjoy it.

I know I will. I usually never back down from a game because it aged poorly(heck this didn't even age that bad just a bit of a delay on the inputs). I am really curious as to what the game has in store for me. And when I have the time I will certainly read the review. I never knew Satoshi did a review of the game but I know a lot of inspiration of this game and it's sequel got in the Pokemon games? That and the fact that a lot of people worked on both games.

I imagine they'd want to go with something similar in tone/style to how they named Beginnings - a short and plain subtitle. Maybe something like "After" or "Nowhere" would be suitable. I definitely think it would be a mistake to number it at this point.

Now we just need Earthbound 3 and Earthbound Endings. C'mon Itoi, humanity needs it.

Aha, "Endings"! So obvious, but I didn't think of it. I like that one as the name for Mother 3.

I have a reproduction cart of this for NES, but bought it on principle. I always said I wished I could pay for a legit version of this game and NOA finally delivered.

Cool that they did this (I did my part and bought it already even if I already own the damn thing multiple times officially and...not so officially).

I'm actually fully expecting an official Mother 3 release now, which can be a good thing or a bad thing for Ninendo of course. But come on, they have expect this kind of expectation if you release Earthbound Zero outside of japan for the first time .

StarFox 2 is a little more complicated:

- The ROM on the net is unfinished and is fan translated, at that
- It's unknown whether or not the mastered ROM that does exist is even in english
- There's the whole issue of the Super FX chip and whether or not they can emulate itproperly, or if they'd have to jump through legal hoops to emulate it, given how the chip came to be.

But hey, we now live in a world where you can buy the first two EB games in America on Virtual Console. Anything's possible.

With a new starfox coming out, now would be the time to jump those hurdles.

It makes me think that Mother 3 will be a physical release for some reason.

Prepare to grind.

I mean it's a great game but it's ruff. Very ruff.

Super hard. Did you think that you had to grind in Earthbound? Well I got some bad news for you.

That one of the main thing i remember about this game, that train tunnel the first time i was sure i wasn't in the right direction.... nop this was the good way...

This game is so slow I needed to speed it up via emulation to make it bearable. Walking speed, text speed and too many confirmation dialogs, slow battles, it was all fucking glacial. Has that been addressed?
