Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I really really really wanted to like Shenmue when I played it originally on my DC, but while playing it I had the dawning realisation that I was doing a boring and monotonous 'job' in the game to fund my playtime of Space Harrier and Hang On, while saving up to buy a virtual Saturn so I could continue player Space Harrier and Hang On without doing the boring in-game job. Both games I owned in the real world anyway. Playing Shenmue was the boring jobb

Shenmue was a huge disappointment for me as well. Very boring game, that I eventually just dropped. The only thing I enjoyed was the arcade room.

Apparently my most controversial opinion is that RPG combat in turn-based form is antiquated and boring, and that modern, action-heavy RPG combat is absolutely the direction I want, especially with AAA games.

I'm fine with it in things like Bravely Default, but I have no interest in seeing well-rendered characters on a big screen wait their turn for shit.

That's in no way controversial, look at the threads you've been a part of, at least half the users there are asking for action too.

However, this idea that turn-based is antiquated is ridiculous. There are turned based systems that are antiquated, but that doesn't mean turn based itself is. Even more ridiculous is the idea that a well rendered character /needs/ to have action controls.

How silly.

Seem like an asshat here but..

Dark Souls and in fact all of the series aren't difficult games at all. They're easy once you get the combat system down.

It's true. To be even harsher, only idiots find those games hard, in my opinion... Absolutely no reflexes are involved - Just an IQ above 90.

I can run off dozens of games released in the last few years that are harder.

Nintendo should get out of making consoles and stick with software. He'll they can even continue making handheld but we should see their games on Sony and MS platforms. They are wasting money and resources, people buy their consoles for just their games... Save the R&D money and just put them out on other platforms.

This is all because they hate sharing profits and want to be in control. It's arrogant and a waste of time. The next platform will be as much of a failure as the Wii U.

This again? Wow.

- I hate GTA games. They're boring.

- Dark Souls was better than Skyrim.

- Uncharted 3 was better than 2.

- Silent Hill: Homecoming was scarier than 2.

- Kefka is a far better villain than Sephiroth.

- Backwards compatibility is a waste of resources.

- Halo 4 is better than 2.

- Chrono Cross was absolutely terrible.

- Bioshock Infinite was better than the original.

Excluding graphics, games haven't really advanced as much as some people think over the last 15 years.

I've heard a lot of talk about how FFVII is dated since the remake has been announced. I don't really understand that. I've played it within the last year, and I don't really see any new games which can stand up to it from anything related to music or gameplay. The combat is fast-paced.

To me it seems many people want the remake to be an action RPG more similar to a game like KH or what the new FFXV will be. Well, I played KH1/2. I didn't even bother finishing the second. Just because there's a field you can run around in during combat doesn't make it more fast-paced, exciting or modern.

my "controversial" opinion is that old-school RPGs just aren't that good, feels like nostalgia is messing with opinions of some.
Talking about Baldurs Gate, old Fallouts, Icewind Dale and recently pillars of eternity/divinity original sin. I've tried the old games and also the enhanced versions. Perhaps these types of games simply aren't for me but I can't find ompfh in them that so many claim.

This again? Wow.
Yup and I will continue to believe this. Fucking hate my Wii and I have two (adopted one by marriage) and probably won't get a Wii U till I can get it for sub 100.

I just don't see a reason for them to make hardware, no 3rd party publisher really gives a shit about them and they lack the output of the IP I care about in anyway to make their hardware a waste of space.

They even seem to acknowledge that the Wii U is a failure with almost nothing to show at E3 of worth for it and mostly focusing on the 3DS.

I am prepared to burn in flames for this:

The Sony E3 conference was like watching an end-of-season play off final football match in a pub, as the supporter of the losing football team, whilst being surrounded by fans of the winning team. I can sort-of understand why others would be happy but I was unable to share in the 'joy'.

TLDR: I wasn't impressed by any of the 'megatonne' announcements.

Yeeah, this isn't controversial, it's just just insulting and idiotic.

My quick list...

Pretty much every Rogue-like indie released on Steam in the past five years. No-one can tell me Dark World Super Meat Boy is even remotely comparable to Dark Souls in terms of skill involved.

Good list. Lmao.

The other issue is when the Wii came out and started kicking ass, that was in the pre-iOS days. That market went to Apple, and is NEVER coming back.

Nintendo is about to get Blackberry'ed, and is well on their way to becoming marginalized if they don't start publishing games on hardware people actually own. Nobody is buying Nintendo hardware just to play a handful of Nintendo games. Nobody.

Since there's seemingly no thread to vent, I'm going to try and twist my frustrations into a controversial post.

Half Life 3 is bigger than all that was announced today. Shenmue isn't even a comparison, Final Fantasy VII (which I am excited for) is a remake Square will probably fuck up, and The Last Guardian is a semi-unknown quantity that, unlikely Half Life, didn't end on a cliffhanger 8 fucking years ago.

I'm glad all three are finally out of the way, and I hope they turn out great... But damnit, I'd trade them all for Half Life 3.

I'll riff off of this: Valve is an extremely disrespectful company and they can keep Half-life 3.

I may have been the biggest HL1 fan on earth. I was a junky for any shred of news, I bought it day one and played the SP, multiplayer and mods endlessly. I was a superfan.

HL2 came out and while I thought they hadn't reinvented the wheel as they did with 1, it was an awesome game and I played it and the episodes and eagerly awaited the conclusion to the saga.

Guess what though? There was no conclusion...but you already know that. The world knows that.

Of course this is natural. When a game series struggles financially, sometimes we fail to receive closure to a storyline- *record scratch* Oh wait...it was a huge financial success? Oh.

It was such a success, in fact, that Valve was able to invest our money into the money printing machine that is Steam and forget about us and our unreasonable request that they at least have the decency to licence out the property so somone can finish the story (you know the line must be long, for devs that would kill for the licence...imagine Machine Games?)

This makes me think if there was an epic trilogy like Lord of the Rings (ignoring the fact that you can at least read the books) and after the first two movies do so well, Peter Jackson was like "Wow, great, now I don't have to make the third movie, because I have enough money to distribute movies and make way more cash going forward!"

He would be loathed.

So, I guess that's my semi-controversial opinion. Valve has chewed Half-life fans up and spit them out and I've gone from the ultimate Valve fanboy to really not respecting them very much at all.

(Yes, I know they've made other great games and have created an amazing system with Steam, but they did it off of our backs of fans of the series that started it all.)

Sony should not have released Allstar Brawler. They should have gone Kingdom Hearts style of world by world travelling containing all they're franchises.

FF8 is best FF, well best jrpg even. That card game alone puts to shame some turd rpg's, *cough*Skyrim*cough*. Second best would probably be Digimon 3 IMO.

Open world is this gen's "cinematic experience" from last gen. Infamous SS would have been a better game if it is not open world.

It's funny you say this because, and this isn't even a stupid 'controversial' statement, but the WiiU has the best games of ANY of the current gen consoles. And the Wii has an even better lineup.

Waste of space indeed.

I hope people realize that when they invest in the Shenmue kickstarter, they're investing in Yu Suzuki and not Shenmue.

While Shenmue was ahead of its time and extremely influential, its time was way back when. It has aged terribly. People who are now playing the first couple games will see that if they can take an objective stance on it.

If Suzuki returns a product that just wraps up the story and doesn't innovate or just pull even with modern gaming then it's going to be met with a lot of disappointment.

While I never played it, The Order got a lot of hate around here and elsewhere. The Order is a descendent of Shenmue. If Suzuki pushes out a product remotely similar to that, hopefully nostalgia can carry those who wanted a new Shenmue all these years to their promised land.

I hope Suzuki does well and I have faith in him. Mainly because of Virtua Fighter though.

After Sony's conference, I have to say that No Man's Sky looks worse and worse every time they show it. What the hell was that "space combat" even? That game looks like a goddamned joke.

whew, nice to have a safe place to get that out.

- Dark Souls was better than Skyrim.

- Kefka is a far better villain than Sephiroth.

I don't think very many people are going to debate you on these.

FFX is by far the worst FF game I've played. 8 would probably be worse, but I never finished it. Games I've played: 1, 2, 4, didn't finish 6, 7, didn't finish 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 12, 13.

Plenty of people will prefer Skyrim to DS, nothing controversial about it either way though.

While I think X is a pretty terrible game, I could no way say its worse than XIII. And how the hell do you not finish 6/7/9?

I'd say that's fairly controversial. I think many, many people, including myself, would firmly disagree with you on this. Especially with the Wii.

I'm replaying Dark Souls 2 and I'll say this: it's the most fun of the Souls games.

Sure, the others are better at world and creature design, have better atmosphere, better lore, but 2 is just so goddamn FUN to play.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Sony won E3 by a lot of smoke and mirrors.
TLG, Shenmue 3 and FF7 stand no chance of coming out any time soon. A multi-billion dollar company using the E3 stage to get their fans to kickstart something with their own money is incredibly cynical.

Only games I didn't finish were 6 and 8. I wasn't enjoying 8 so I stopped, and 6 I was playing about 2 years ago, but other games came out and I never got around to finishing it. 13 is near the bottom too, it's just I think 10 is way worse.

For all we know, TLG could be Feb 2016. Not really that far away.

The kickstarter for Shenmue 3 was used to gauge fan interest. Nothing wrong with that.

A spin on this...

Sony had the best E3 conference in terms of publicity, but PC had by far the best E3. All those PS4/X1 "console exclusives? PC versions (CUPHEAD!!!). Two outta Sony's big three announcements? (Almost certainly superior) PC versions. More DX12 news, Killer Instinct, and Gears of War? PC, baby.

Fair enough. I like the combat in X, and that's the only thing keeping it above 13 for me. The cast of characters in both are hilariously bad, but I can see why someone would prefer XIII over Tidus & the gang.

This might count as a controversial opinion to some: after selling my PS4 and the controllers with it a couple of weeks ago, I started using my old X360 controller for my PC gaming. Just now I had to go out and buy a new DS4 for that stuff, cause the 360 controller kind of sucks a lot compared to it.

Yeah, the affection Shenmue gets is really an anomaly to me. While it's controversial because Shenmue supporters are so loud and passionate. It's not really an unpopular opinion to hold about the game. That's the reason it's taken so long to make a sequel and the sequel has to be kickstarted.

Combovers don't work when there is no hair
I finished The Last of Us Remastered just the other day and.. I really don't think it's particularly good. The combat was plain frustrating and tedious, I fucking HATE stealth in games and I frankly didn't really care about the story or any of the characters at all. But at least the graphics are great.

I've already gotten a lot of heat for this, but: rotr looks more impressive to me than Uc4.

I can't really defend this, it's just how the two games look me. I think rotr looks better.

Burnout Paradise is the best racing game outside of Mario Kart since it came out

Assassins Creed Brotherhood is a poor boring imitation of what made 2 quite a good game

The world and stories in Oblivion>Skyrim

Resistance Fall of Man is one of the best FPS of last gen

God of War Ascension is by far the worst God of War game and I say that as a huge fan of the series, it isn't even fun to play.

FFX is good but not great by any means.

The Vita was a huge disappointment no matter what anyone says but I still like mine since launch.

Valve ain't that great anymore

GTA Online is trash

WB are worse than EA now with the pre orders and DLC and such

- Ubisoft and EA are great publishers, they are very consistent with the quality of their games imho (in a good way), though Ubisoft's open-world games are feeling a bit samey. Once again apparent at their E3 media briefing. Ghost Recon: Wild Lands looks impressive with its huge scope, but it's again an open-world game with shooting in a modern-day setting. I'd like to see more AAA games set in a fantasy or/and sci-fi worlds.

- I have neither a XB1 or PS4, but XB1 is the most appealing console at the moment for me I'd say

- Microsoft had the best; most enjoyable E3 media briefing at E3 2015

- Ratchet & Clank is one of the best franchises in the medium of video games, of all time

- Rayman Origins is one of the best 2D platformers of all time (still need to play Legends)

- PS Vita is really good and has a fantastic catalogue of games (I've already said this in this thread)

- Nintendo makes a lot of great games, but I don't think they're really deserving on be put on a pedestal as best developer/publisher in the world at the moment, their games lack a bit of ambition I think, especially looking at what they showed in their E3 digital event.

- If you're literally happy because a game is exclusive to one platform, then you're either a fanboy that might be taking things a bit too far or you're borderline sociopathetic. (e.g. someone saying like: "Wow, so happy that Street Fighter V is exclusive to PS4!!! Good that it isn't on XB1 and Xbox users can't play it, now we have a great PS4 exclusive! Thanks Sony")
