Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

So what you're saying... is that what Bungie is doing is much, much worse than what Turtle Rock did with Evolve. That's what I'm getting out of that.

What Bungie is doing is selling over priced totally optional cosmetic items, rather than carving off large, important parts of the game to sell for excessive costs. The situations share the "over priced" part of that statement, and that is all.

Someone might've brought this up already, but I found it amusing how I downloaded 6 free DLCs for The Witcher 3 that I missed and now I saw the whole thing going on with $20 for some minor things.

20 bucks? Are they for real? At that point people might as well buy the CE, even if they already own the game.

What they are doing is far worse as far as messaging goes. No doubt that these shaders and emotes will not cause problems with play Destiny. But man....everything about this apology reads like an Onion article.

In that other thread I was surprised by how many people don't know who Luke Smith is, I was reading the interview like yup that's classic Luke.

Luke's apology was fine. The "solution" didn't really solve anything, that is for sure. But comparing the situation to Evolve, at all, is really absurd.

It's amusing to me that back when the first expansion was released I was annoyed that price was 20$ for so little content. And now this...it's pretty funny, it's almost like they want the amount of content in their expansions to seem like a good deal in comparison. This game has so much potential, but why are they putting their fans though the ringer for every dollar they can get.

What a fine mess you've found yourself in Bungie/Activision. Can't say I'm surprised.

In my ideal world:

The Taken King: $30 - 35

Cosmetics pack: $10 - 15 or $3 separately.

(Optional) 15 - 20% discount for anyone who bought the season pass or both expansions.

This should not be that difficult. Too bad this is never happening because that would be a too good of deal.

I'm disappointed that the blowback has mostly been towards the emotes and shaders.

I think the main issue is the $40=£40 price they're trying to have to screw over UK people (I bought it from US PSN so it doesn't affect me, but it affects some of my friends)

If these "collectors edition" emotes are going to be £20 as well then the expansion + emotes are going to be the equivalent of $95

I love destiny and I'm going to get TTK but it's not right to charge so much in the UK

I for one am glad to see that they're offering a way for current players to acquire TTK + the digital cosmetic items without having to repurchase content. Just wish that it still didn't rub me the wrong way, because we all know this will lead to further monetization within Destiny.

Plus, users outside the US are getting screwed with their 1:1 pricing.

What were you people expecting..free?

Anyway fuck the fluff and all this crying over a emote or 2.. what about the 40$ vs £40?

As a UK player that's the worst thing for me and can't be defended. $40 is NOT the same as £40 Activision. Decided to skip the expansion till it's around £25-£30

So what's the "something better" that Deej mentioned then?

I swear as soon as I read that I thought "they're gonna try and say our experience over the past year is the something better"

So far looks like I'm right.

Coming at some unspecific point in the future. From the most recent BWU, regarding the VIP stuff:
And we’ll have more fun stuff for you to announce in the very short term future, just for you.

I was really expecting them to reduce the price of the base expansion to $30, and the digital CE to $40-$50. This isn't addressing the problems.

$20, the same cost of the previous two expansions, for some trivial add-ons? Man, they're making me feel like a sucker for playing this game.

You have to wonder how this'll affect the userbase and sales of Destiny 2.

Partnering with Activision ensured that the community gets the shitty end of the deal. Because of this, the community has suffered, especially those who have chosen to stick with the game because they love it. Bungie's pricing policy and PR is atrocious.

Complaints about the EU price conversion I can understand. Whining about the price of purely cosmetic luxury items though... just don't buy it if you can't personally justify it and move on.

Why do you have such a strange rule about what you can and cannot complain about?

Uhhh what. I guess I'll keep waiting and not playing or buying anything else until I feel like they aren't totally out of sync with what I expect as a long time player since public beta. The most important question wasn't answered..what about the day 1 people?
Bungie you are asshats.

It's only about 1-3 hours of playtime right now to get a level 28 character to 30 or above (without using any of the DLC content - legendary armor is dropping plentifully and is easy to buy at the tower using marks from strikes or crucible, and exotics can come at +42 light if you buy a new one from Xur on the weekend). Not anywhere near on the same level as regrinding exotics after upgrading them through Xur in TDB.

I think they should be made available for all year one players regardless of level. That's more about a principle though, as I'm unlikely to go back to the game. The 1st DLC splitted our group, as you couldn't participate in the same weekly missions. Those who kept on playing are leveled far higher than those who didn't, and based on the posts in our FB group, some of them are now moving to other games as well.

I might return to it, if the additional content would get a significant price drop at some point, but I think that's very unlikely to happen, considering that DLCs rarily get cheaper. I really don't want to pay premium price for few little story missions, when raids are nearly useless to me due to the lack of matchmaking. It's just a pain in the ass to arrange gaming schedules for them.

On a side note, it would be interesting to know the price and playing time ratio between the main game's campaign, the 1st and 2nd DLC, and the upcoming larger one. I wonder if the campaign length of the Taken King is in correlation to the price tag?

You quit? Good. Glad they aren't rewarding quitters.

Are we back in kindergarten now?

i guess Bungie hope fools will think now I need to only spend 20 instead of 40 for that stuff so that must be good. They are absolutely shameless but will probably get away with it. What a joke.

Right, my bad, I meant consumers, Destiny consumers.

Still wrong though.

Look, I know Destiny is a popular thing to shit on and yes, you are totally en vogue, but stick with the facts please.

Destiny players are not used to paying 20 $ for 3 shaders.

Well, according to Bungie...
I know it's just there to explain to employees who don't know or care about Destiny, but still...

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

I've not seen that before. This is just flat out hilarious! The amount of love and care they are showing to the consumers who supported them since day one of the studio is being wiped off their ass right now. Now I need to enter a 7/11 and see this for myself.

At least now I can buy the Krypt unlokK code for MKX and feel smart.

To plainly state the obvious, it's bungie's atrocious PR and communication I'm shitting on, as I mistakenly believed was obvious from my paraphrasing, almost word for word, of their quote about destiny consumers being used to pay.

What annoys me most about this, more than the fact that we can overpay for cosmetic stuff, is the fact that it still seems like I have to own both expansions to play TTK? Why?

The response should have been a price drop on the digital CE, to compensate for the lack of physical items, and then to sell the digital bits for the (lower) price difference.

This does nothing to alleviate the feeling that Destiny players are being taken (no pun intended) to the cleaners for content.
Precisely so.

I'm glad they are making them available but HAH $20. Maybe like, $5, even then it'd be a tough sell. Emotes, shaders, and some class items that I wouldn't use past 2 hours.

Simple, don't buy it.

That answer doesn't fix everything. If it cost a days work to make that CE content, fifty rich people who at $20 a pop do decide to buy it would make it worth it to Bungie. Yet they might not even know themselves how much more money they could make by making it cheaper. They could honestly be that shortsighted.

Well it would be weird for Oryx is after you for killing across if you didn't. Then again, I doubt you'll have to kill Crota to play TTK.

So as a UK Destiny player since day 1, with a digital guardian edition all the way to the Taken King Expansion, the game costs me £150.

This translates to $235.

Would any of you American Destiny players spend that much on this one game?

Considering all the bad PR, mishaps with fundamental game aspects since launch
i.e. glitchy raids, crummy re-upgrade system etc and anemic expansion content, I think I've just about reached my limit with this game.

It's obviously optional and nobody is making anyone pay $20 for some class items but ffs bungie you should have known this would have caused a stir. How out of touch are they?

lol deflecting much? I still wasn't shitting on destiny unlike what you stated. That document was indeed not PR, but it's indicative of how bungie considers destiny players. So, you're right, I shouldn't have written PR, but rather more generally "the way bungie appears to think of, treat, and/or consider destiny players."

The actual PR aspect that ticks me off is them pretending to be doing people a favor by selling some emotes and shaders for $20.

Reading the apology, I think it's really considered, genuine and shows a clear understanding of how and why Luke upset people, so it's a legitimately earnest apology in my book. But then the pricing...
