PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Aw yeah! Thanks hardcastlemccormick. After some screwing around with different settings and back / forth with the HDD, finally got everything working and DQV English translation running on actual hardware, from the hard drive no less.

Only other question is, does a free mcboot memory card still function as a normal memory card as well? Not that its a hindrance, but just checking.

Yes it does! But the FreeMCBoot stuff takes up about a fourth of the space of the memory card (about 2/2.5 MB of the 8MB available) so there's not a ton of space.

jumping in here:

Gradius V is dope. I have some nitpicks regarding some tiny cutscenes being unskippable, but all in all I consider it to be one of Treasure's legitimately great games (alongside Ikaruga and Alien Soldier).

R-Type Final put me to sleep. Man is that game dull. Has an awful lot of ships to collect, though, if you're craving that sort of thing instead of a traditional arcade STG.

Gradius V still holds up pretty damn well graphically to. I'm still pissed that I'll never get to mess with the different weapon loadouts cause I can't beat the game.

Shit gets ridiculously tough at the "pink bio" stage..

edit: I know you can get infinite lives but you need 10 hours of "in game" time to unlock it.

Oh yeah! Maximo series!

Busted out the ps2 to try ff9 on it... dude, this is the way to play it. I tried it on my 60gb ps3, and there was horrible lag. Tried it on the vita, and the lag was so bad, when I entered battles it was like a slide show. Ps2 has zero input lag and has no slow down. Makes me miss the time of ps1 and ps2 games. This is why I bought a ps2 slim recently

Might've just scored a Greatest Hits SH2 for the price of vanilla! Woohoo!

It's a good thing in this case! The GH version on PS2 has the Maria prologue. In fact, I keep a GH disk in a vanilla cover just like you got it there.

A few games added bonuses like this throughout that generation.

What mystifies me is VF4 Greatest Hits. Why does this need to exist when VF4EVO came out a year after VF4? When did VF4 GH come out?

Do most of you just play your PS1 games on your PS2?

I'd rather hate less retro connected, the better. Although a PSOne with the LCD add-on is super sweet.

I know the emulation isn't foolproof, but the amount that have issues are negligible. I vaguely remember something with Chrono Cross, but that's about it.

Nice. I got the European Platinum release some time ago myself. Sadly without the manual, but for the price I can't really complain. And everything I'm seeing on local auctions/classifieds is the first release anyway.
I think it's my second non-first release (the other being SC3 I got with the console).

I remember way way back I was a member on a car forum and I asked in their off-topic area the same thing- why is Operation Genesis for PS2 so expensive? This was about 7-8 years ago. I was able to get a complete copy for like $30, which seemed like a lot for a Jurassic Park licensed game.

It's just not very common, I guess it didn't sell well. It also was received a lot better than many other JP licensed games, in fact, I would say it's still the best. If you can get a copy you'll have a lot of fun. I think the Xbox version is expensive as well, but slightly less than PS2. But if you're not a collector and just want to enjoy the game, you might want to search for the PC version. I think both of the console versions have a gameplay flaw where you can't pick any combination of dig sites that have all of the dinosaurs available. I think I heard somewhere that the PC version has a mod that does let you.

It costs more actually overall.

Yes, that's what I do. I like the idea of having fewer consoles but with maximum library compatibility. In other words, real BC rocks.

Import train rolls on.

Now to figure out how to play them lol.

EDIT: ACE3 is pretty easy to come to grips on. Macross is gonna take a little (didn't bother to look at config though).

Phantasy Star Generations 1, I've having a little trouble when using the translation. Alis turns into glitch graphics after a battle.

I got damn lucky getting Operation Genesis last year on ebay. Had it in my saved searches and one popped up on my birthday no less. No photo of it, listed in acceptable condition, no details, but for $15. Bought it quickly, figured that was a good price for a disc only copy and I'd snag the case separately. Came in the mail, game was complete in like new condition.

Lucky!!!

Fired up 007: From Russia With Love last night. This game is just plain fun. There's nothing particularly special about it, but you can't help but smile while playing it. Not only does it look fairly good but it controls surprisingly well.

What's the concensus on Capcom Classics vol. 2? I have it but I haven't played it much. I want to play console ST but don't feel like paying $175 right now.

If you just want ST buy SF Collection for PSX. more accurate port, pretty cheap too.

meanwhile, Sony component cables are in and I'm living the dream.

Just bought this Hori Mini PS1/PS2 pad. Thinking it will be perfect for arcade type games that use dual analog sticks like God Hand and Burnout 3. :)

Interesting. Is it any comfortable? The analogs look kinda awkward.

We'll see, it hasn't come in the mail yet. I wanted a more classic pad but with analog sticks so I'm gonna try it out. I feel like the handles on the stock DS2 aren't comfortable for action games and classic games after a while. I wish I could just use a Gamecube controller on the PS2 though, obvious it'd suck if you needed the other buttons.

I just went through the game again last week. It really does. What Sega did with that game back then was pretty impressive. I'm starting on 2 this week and if I have time, maybe doing 3 and 4 in prep for 5.
I was midway through 2 when I got the first game, seems silly to do so but I think when I'm done with Y1 ill just start fresh on 2. I'm playing through component out with the CRT I posted earlier, and it really looks terrific. I can't decide however if I want to be playing in 4:3 or 16:9 - while I tend to prefer the latter I find it bothersome that UI elements like the radar are plainly not optimized for widescreen. it's really distracting.

This looks cool. Can you give us impressions of how well the d-pad works for arcade games like Namco collection stuff or Street Fighter?

It's taking some dedication to ignore games like MGSV to focus on my Yakuza 2 playthru! With Y5 on the horizon... must be strong.

typical of my luck, someone finally lists a network adapter and it even came with a 80gb HDD for £10 on ebay and it was the one day i never bothered to look at the new listings so ofcourse i missed it

That sucks I got lucky when I got mine back in 07 as game were phasing ps2 out picked one up for £10 with twisted metal black

PS2 can do component out compared to PS's S-video limit.

PS games look amazing on the PS2. I haven't any trouble outside of Grandia, personally.
