Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

I imagine DLC will probably not include too many new Nintendo characters since that's the selling point of new Smash games.

So it's perfectly suited for returning vets and third party characters.

Just like the Professor Layton rumor, I don't believe it. I'm not even sure if the game is out in Japan yet. Will happily eat crow if it's true though.

What game would a Shovel Knight amiibo work for though? Would it be required to unlock special content in SK1? What special content would be worth that asking price? Would be kind of shitty to make people pay for a $13 dollar figure when the playstation/xbox versions got exclusive content in game for free.

Not sure if you can put a download code on an amiibo, but if you can I would put a code for the first game on there and give the devs a cut of the profit.

Ewwwwwwwwwww. I hope this isn't true. There are thousands of characters from Nintendo and 3rd parties that should be added before a character from Yet Another Retro Indie Platformer.

YARIP sounds nice.

That actually makes a lot of sense, although disappointing in more ways then one. People are still getting over Snake being cut.

Shovel Knight is cool though!

Please be true

Smash needs some more Shovelry.

And the more exposure an amazing game like Shovel Knight gets, the better.

I'd prefer Shantae but Nintendo really loved to treat Shovel Knight as something of their own and it'd be a huge win for the indie community.

As much as I love Shovel Knight, I really think it'd be weird for him to get in before characters like Wonder Red or Bayonetta (or hell, even Snake).

Outside of Rare and maybe Retro's contributions to Donkey Kong and Metroid, are there even any Nintendo characters big enough to make it in who weren't made in Japan?

Big? Probably not...

I'm guessing the Aura-Aura Climber was actually designed by NST, considering the illustration was changed in the Japanese title screen. It's a very simple character, but I wouldn't put it past them to include him as an unexpected Assist Trophy sometime.

Going by IMDB credits, 1080º Avalanche's characters were illustrated by Wataru Yamaguchi. However, it's possible that some of the new characters were designed by NST. I'm guessing something similar for Wave Race: Blue Storm.

It's true that there's not a whole lot. The truth is that this doesn't matter very much. Nintendo's art has a lot of variation, and there are some western artists in the extensive Nintendo family (like Genius Sonority / Game Freak's James Turner). However, I do think it would be really interesting to see a Nintendo-affiliated studio from America or Europe make an entire new IP from the ground up, and the new characters is just one of the reasons.

I'd be a little more inclined to believe this if we knew if Nintendo was publishing Shovel Knight in Japan.

Right now it's the fact that Japan has no idea who Shovel Knight even is that's keeping me from really believing this.

Smash has always had a very strong Japanese focus and is basically designed around how the Japanese play Smash (see For Glory mode). To suddenly turn around and add a western indie game that never saw a release in Japan would be a rather abrupt turn for the series and its development history.

It would also imply the Japanese wasted their time voting in the ballot.

Interesting, but the sources are suspect.

With that said certain salt in the posts here are hilarious. You got shit like "Nintendo doesn't care about these characters!" shit.

If it happens I will be very happy. If it doesn't, I won't be disappointed. I can certainly see him fit in with the Smash roster though.

I see that many posters assumed that it's fake so I guess that meant it's going to be true. :P

Anyway, I don't mind to see Shovel Knight getting in because he's going to be my Scrooge McDuck. He have that cane hopping ability but with Shovel!

Thinking about it more, if this means the possible inclusion of glorious Shovel Knight music then I'm behind his inclusion 100%

Isn't the ballot supposed to be ongoing for another month and a bit? I didn't expect to see anything from it until then.

This would be a massive-good will boon for Nintendo if they pulled this off. Shovel Knight pays so much homage to some characters that exist in Smash already that it would definitely be a logical addition if true. If Smash Brothers is a love-letter to the history of Nintendo, it would be cool to see a character influenced by that history be recommended.

What would be really smart, if this existed, would be if Shovel Knights Final Smash included cameos from the type of Nindie characters that are being featured in Runbow. It would be incredibly forward-thinking of Nintendo to pay homage to the few, smaller 3rd party developers that are actually supporting Nintendo hardware.

They'd probably start working on one of the ballot characters already. It just means they'll continue accepting submissions for a bit after for another potential newcomer.

Oh jeez, now this had me thinking SK as an "Indie" rep as a whole, rather than repping SK alone, would actually be pretty cool.

Like I'm imagining his side special being a charge attack, where he sprints and there's a rainbow behind him like Bit Trip. One of his taunts is a Shantae Dance. His Final Smash has several indies in it.

Actually, if SK was like that, I'd be more behind the idea and think it was more likely.

Yeah, like how Pacman also represents Namco's Arcade era! Put this way I think the inclusion makes much more sense if true.

The ballot is just a gauge. Nothing more or less. If for whatever reason Wolf got in and used the ballot for part of his inclusion, it's because they saw interest in him, not because he is the winner or something.

The only problem with this is the bureaucratic nightmare it would be to make sure that all characters they included were being represented correctly from each of the respective franchise owners. Again, it was done for Runbow, so I don't see why it couldn't be done here, but I bet this idea is more fantasy then reality.

Not even gonna entertain this rumor. Professor Layton was one thing but this is just silly. Shovel Knight isn't very closely related to Nintendo and as a third party character is pretty bottom-of-the-barrel.

Really hope this isn't true.

Why are there never ever rumors about Nintendo characters? :(

Nope. Maybe as an Assist Trophy at the very most, but there are characters that deserve the time spent on developing them for Smash far more than an indie platforming character like Shovel Knight. Granted, I love Shovel Knight, but I just don't think he's even remotely important enough to actually be playable.
