SFII debuted on the SNES first, sold millions of copies on the platform, and basically introduced fighting games to the console crowd. He has popped up on Nintendo hardware every now and then. Capcom vs SNK 2 EO for GCN, Street Fighter Alpha 3 for GBA, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for Wii, SSFIV for 3DS... he's appeared in more Nintendo games recently than Mega Man *rim shot*

Alpha 2 was on the SNES as well.

So Ryu had a game recently but it doesn't count because you don't think it counts...

Heh, said game which has Ryu front and centre on the cover sold over 1 million copies too.


It's absurd to claim Ryu is as 'undeserving' or as unimportant in respects to Nintendo as Ryu is when compared to Shovel Knight.

This is me reaching very far, but what if part of the announcements at Prime include Nintendo holding publishing rights for Shovel Knight in Japan?

I think Shovel Knight as an indie games rep makes sense, and an indies game rep is something that should absolutely happen, given the majority of Nintendo's third party support nowadays is indie. And no indie franchise or character is really big enough on the merits of their own franchise alone to merit a smash character, but right now Shovel Knight is one of the most popular ones, and he launched on Nintendo first (well, and steam but still). As for the Japan thing, for all we know Nintendo could be their mystery Japanese publisher and indies are more of a western thing anyways, so Japan shouldn't be the target of an indie rep (Aside from which, if Japan only characters can get in like Marth and Roy back in Melee, I don't see why they'd be adamant against an NA only character)

And? Doesn't mean they can't have been provided a copy to try or something. Shovel Knight doesn't really require you know english to play. And lets not forget that before he died, Iwata was at the head of both NoA and NCL, so he could've been the one to suggest it to Sakurai. I'm sure Nintendo is aware how important indies have become in the west, especially since most of their third party support is indies

Back during Brawl's development he posted pictures of his office, and he had a lounge room with a 360 (A 360!) connected. I don't remember if he mentioned playing Call of Duty or Gears of War, but it was something along the lines of that.

While this is true, Sakurai has stated that he is thankful for being able to represent Japanese gaming in Smash Bros. This is also clear in the characters we have in the game so far. I know this quote might not mean anything, but it is because of this I never believed in the Rayman rumor back then, and it's also why I'm having a hard time believing this.

Snake basically broke down all barriers. If Sakurai likes somebody enough and the developers play ball, they can get in. This is true of both the Professor Layton and Shovel Knight rumors. The only restrictions really are whether they've been on a nintendo system before, they're game characters, and whether Sakurai wants them in.
