Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

Obviously they'd say this, but..

Probably not true, but it would be cool if it was. Shovel Knight is one of my favorite new game characters in the last, like, decade or so.

Huh. Would be weird to say the least. Also the second non-Japanese made character in Smash (Diddy being the first, being a Rare creation).

There's something cool about possibly being able to smack half the cast of Smash in the face with a shovel.

Nintendo have pretty good links with Yacht Club- they were sponsoring WiiU terminals with SK playable on it at shows last year.

I understand that SK isn't as well known as other characters, but personally it's my favourite new IP (and character) this gen, he has bags of charm and a great game.

I'd like it to be true, but I'm guessing this megaton that Yacht Club talks about is going to be a guest character appearing in Shovel Knight, similar to Battletoads and Kratos.

If they can see fit to put Commander Video and Rayman in as trophies I can't see why not have SK as a playable fighter.

their announcement gives this rumor some credence. saying, "We've heard the cries of bringing more exclusive content to Nintendo platforms. It might not be quite what you expect…" could mean that the exclusive content coming to Nintendo platforms is not actually going to be part of the Shovel Knight game. getting a character to appear in Shovel Knight, like Kratos and the Battletoads, is exactly what we would expect.

Knowing Sakurai, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's already played Shovel Knight and loved it. Maybe Shovel Knight really did get a ton of votes in the ballot and Sakurai liked the idea.

Weren't the amiibo for all other new characters announced months after the character unveiling? I really doubt some retailer would know about it so early if it is for Smash.

However, there's a possibility that it isn't an amiibo for Smash, but for another game (Shovel Knight DLC maybe?).

Either way, I don't really buy this at all.

I like it. It's different and smart. It sends a strong signal to the indie community by providing incentives for indie developers to consider Nintendo platforms. Hopefully Nintendo carries this on throughout their future titles.

From a consumer perspective, it is not as crazy as I would like from a new character, nor does it satiate my desire for characters from unknown Nintendo developed games such as Marvellous: Another Island. Or Hakkuen from Sutte Hakkun. But because it's an obscure choice, I'm partly satisfied.

Man those leaks take every fun out of announcements regarding smash roster and assets . I wonder how so many leaks are possible

Certainly gets rid of the initial hype, but I have grown to enjoy following all the debates and detective work that comes with every leak

Still, I'm mad that Ryu got leaked. Totally sucked all the fun out of that one.

We do know retailers get stuff long ahead of us. That South African retailer leaked the existence of the Splatoon amiibo as well as various amiibo dates on numerous occasions

The fighter ballot wasn't a "Those with most votes gets into Smash" situation though.

Sure, I'm not saying if everyone voted Shrek we'd see Shrek, but there's no point in doing it if they don't at least consider those with the most votes and instead just go "Well, no, don't like that character so nope."

Shovel Knight wasn't ever even released in Japan, was it?

That seems like a pretty big obstacle.

Edit: Actually reading this story, it is a shitload of supposition based around Shovel Knight possibly, maybe having an amiibo. Looking it up:

This is what this is all about?

I believe that's a fan mockup in the Smash art style. There are several like it, Shovel Knight included.

Pretty sure that's how we get Lloyd, K. Rool and Chrom Mii costumes :p

Fuck this just give me my Golden Sun character already.
Shantae is the only acceptable indie I'll accept for now.

Ryu and Roy had their amiibos announced during the same digital event that they were officially revealed.

Aha! But would people expect them to put Nintendo characters in the game at this point, long after the original release date? Those predicting the Nintendo versions would be getting someone expected it to be not long after the PS4 and XBone versions released.

I don't know what to expect, and I can't predict what's unexpected, naturally. But it does sound like something fun will be coming!

Wasn't this proven fake several times over? I believe the original reddit poster said he made it up. Hell that amiibo is obviously the Smashified art.

Personally, if Nintendo chose an indie character to be playable in Smash, I'd rather it be Commander Video since he started on Nintendo platforms and has had several releases on their systems. Heck, Commander Video already has a Trophy in Smash, and is the only indie to be represented in Smash ever.

It's not about Sakurai, this is from the fighter ballot.

Which is
1. Not over.
2. A suggestion box meaning getting the most votes != being a fighter

Sakurai and co can pick whoever they want if they think the idea is interesting.

Also I find it out that the retail sector is the source for a rumour about a DLC character seeing as that's not the distribution channel for them. Also the Amiibo comment is fishy as the current DLC characters still haven't gotten their Amiibo characters in stores yet.

I mean... we'll see. Tamaki definitely has some contacts so it's a possibility. It's at least as credible as the Layton rumor.

I always thought the hype came from the finding out who you can play as, and what you can do with the game, and not the drawn out, artificial anticipation manufactured by the marketing. This getting possibly leaked isn't hype killing. Its the hype itself. Its just not THAT kind of officially sanctioned marketing bullshit hype.

The mockup was made by the same guy who pranked the internet with the Rayman fake.

He's getting worse at it also.

Good lord. Wonder when his 15 minutes of fame will be done with.

This wouldn't make much sense

- Other third parties have a pretty rigorous criteria to be added, requiring them to be massive icons in gaming and incredibly influential.
- The game was never released in Japan and SK has no support in Japan at all. Since the developers of Smash are Japanese, this means they're basically making a character blind, versus the other characters that Sakurai and his team are already familiar with.
- The ballot isn't over, and while I doubt they haven't started working on a ballot character, it still feels too early to actually release one.

Not that it isn't a good thing that Nintendo would give such a shout-out to a modern indie title/character like this...

...but damn, can't even get some Castlevania or Bomberman or something in there first? Oh well...if this is true, that's great for Yacht Club.

yes

I really, really, really doubt it.

I'm sure Shovel Knight is a good game, but the character simply isn't a gaming legend. Every third party character in Smash is a famous icon in the industry. Shovel Knight is absolutely not in the same league as Pac-Man, Sonic the Hedgehog or Street Fighter.

I remember a rumor back when Smash 4 came out that the NOA basically had to beg Sakurai to include the Captain Video trophy because he didn't want to include an indie trophy.

If that was true, it seems incredibly unlikely he'd add a western developed indie character as an actual fighter unless NOA put extreme pressure on the Smash Team somehow.

As both of those franchises are owned by Konami and in the dumpester/pachinko machines only, nope.

this post made me realize how jp focused SSB is atm. over 50 characters and only 1 is not from JP origin?
