Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

Nah man, the next slot should go to....K. Rool.

For some reason.

I guess I can kind of understand people thinking certain characters are more deserving of a spot in Smash in Shovel Knight but anyone saying it should K. Rool aren't making their case very well. That pick would be only slight less WTF than Geno or Goku.
Well for me and seemingly many others who have their top pick/vote as K. Rool, the reason(s) I want to see him in Smash are for one, his design, while ugly, is oddly charming and endearing in itself. Two, his personas across DCK 1-3 and 64 lend well to him having a rather schizophrenic and wacky presence and varied moveset. Finally, three, he was in a great trilogy of games and was an enjoyable boss character to overcome, if tough.

I'm a bit different in picking him as my choice because while I had a SNES as a kid, I never played the DKC games, and discovered the trilogy on the Wii, and fell in love with them and happened to really enjoy the Kremlings/K. Rool's presence. It's fine to disagree though, I'm not going to go off on anybody like some of the more, uh, passionate fans.

Well the argument is K Rool is the Bowser of the DK series. Of course one can twist this and point out the DK series is part of the Mario series ergo Bowser is the Bowser of the DK series, or even Mario is the Bowser to the DK in his series.

Other popular bad guys I've seen mentioned over the years (since the forerunners constantly change as the years go by and some part of me does see Shovel Knight as a bit of a Geno in this regard) Captain Syrup for Wario and Ridley (lol) for Samus. Syrup would be argued as too obscure and Wario Land hardly gets any representation in Smash and well Ridley is Ridley, so that leaves K Rool as the choice missing bad guy.

As far as villains go, I think there are a few that stand a chance.

1. King Hippo (or any other opponent from Punch-Out!!, though he is definitely up there)
2. Captain Syrup (granted Sakurai has a weird ignorance of Wario Land - either willful or not)
3. Dark Samus (if Sakurai wants to add a third Metroid rep, I could see him going for her)
4. Medusa or Hades (also Viridi sort of)
5. Fawful (though I have bias)
6. King K. Rool
7. Ganon
8. Samurai Goroh

Oh come now, there's numerous valid reasons why people think K. Rool deserves to be in.

1. DK rep (four games and only two reps for one of the biggest video game series ever?)
2. Villain
3. People want Trouble King 3
4. People have wanted him for a really long time, and his popularity has been pretty decent at worst TBH
5. Villain of a series considered a classic to many

Really, the only good reason against K. Rool is a personal one of "I don't like him". Moveset potential ain't a thing (and in K. Rool's case not even reasonably a problem), relevancy is only somewhat valuable (in that it may influence Sakurai's decisions), etc.

Why are there people against the diminutive knight (possibly) pogo bouncing his way into Super Smash Bros.?

You know why

The difference for Shovel Knight is he would be in as an indie games rep. So he'd be more interchangable if another indie gets super popular. And Geno was dumb because he was a super niche character from one mario game that was also owned by Square. He wasn't a main character, and he wasn't representing a new franchise. Honestly, I prefer getting new franchises represented than just getting a villain from an already represented one. And given how important indies have been to Nintendo this gen (given they're pretty much the vast majority of their third party support), I think there should be an indie rep at some point

I meant Geno as in a character that gets a lot of buzz before the crowd moves on to the next thing. Geno used to be all the rage in the Brawl days but I hardly hear a thing about him now. Maybe Vaati from Zelda would have been a better example as he was a popular choice when he was new to Zelda games, but seeing as his last game was years ago you don't hear much clamouring for him.

So is there actually going to be a streamed event for this nindies at pax thing? Reading about it the event sounds more like a in person thing then a big stream to make big announcements time of deal.

GameXplain discussion

It's starting to seem like every time those guys make a video on a Smash leak it's revealed to be fake moments later. I give this rumour about 10 more minutes
They mentioned the idea that a Shovel Knight Amiibo could be legit but is just for the Wii U & 3DS versions of Shovel Knight to unlock exclusive content. That would make sense. And why would retailers know about content that's sold exclusively on the eShop?

As long as a character is primarily a video game character that has a history with Nintendo consoles, they are fair game to be considered for Smash. You can use somewhat objective measures of why Character A is more likely to be in than Character B, but nobody really deserves to be in Smash. Every "pro" argument for a character boils down to "I like this character" and every "against" argument boils down to "I don't like this character". It's as simple as that.

Hopefully this isn't true. It would really cheapen the roster if a character from one recent multiplat indie game (that only had exclusive content on non-Nintendo systems, no less) got in over the multitude of other deserving choices.

So many in here talk about Shovel Knight as if it was just some random indie title. The game was a MASSIVE success, especially so on Nintendo platforms specifically where it was a console exclusive for some time, and it's been a critical darling since the day it released. As a platformer there are few in recent times from ANY developer big or small that could stack up to it save for maybe the recent 2D Rayman's or Nintendo's own offerings. The fact that it's also a fairly fresh IP with a lot of mindshare right now makes it a perfect time for its inclusion. Not to mention that if you wanna level the single game criticism then you end up disqualifying a lot of arguably deserving requested characters like the Inkling and ones that are already even in the game like duck hunt dog and (at least up until the time of release) Pit and Wii Fit Trainer.

Also, w/e bitches #geno4smash5lyfe

Conflicted on this one. I really did enjoy the game, but I really don't think he deserves a spot quite yet. I'm sure he would have a decent moveset, but he hasn't got enough history yet to make it feel exciting. If it still is a franchise in seven years, I coild see him having a good chance in the next game, though.

Still think Layton is a much better choice. Good sales, Nintendo loyalty and undeniably unique. Level-5 deserves the representation, and Layton has always been as close to a Nintendo character as they come.

I'm having a really hard time deciding if the leak is true or not while still getting over the fact that the Layton hype was shot down again.

Yeah, if we're getting a new character announcement I expect something like the Lucina, Robin, Captain Falcon reveal; an announcement of a trailer before hand.

Also t's been pointed out September 13th is a good guess for something being announced for it is both Smash 4's one year anniversary (who would have thought we'd be yackering on about Smash rumours a year after launch) and Super Mario Bros' 30th.

Even if it isn't revealed tomorrow it doesn't necessarily mean Shovel Knight isn't in. PAX seems like a weird place to reveal Smash DLC honestly.

For some reason they have Smash units set up at PAX. It's the only Nintendo game there that either isn't released yet or has an update coming that's being shown off (Splatoon).

It's just suspicious.

Toad confirmed. He's the best, you know.

Smash is still Smash and for some people it may be their first chance to play with the new DLC characters

Yeah but theres a nintendo Indie specific event, plus with Iwata's passing and all the news we got via pr its obvious that a Direct was cancelled and NOA would think anew Smash character deserves better than a footnote in a pr.

Here's a rundown of # of characters per console (based on origin) w/ an example for each

G&W and older – Mr. Game & Watch (1)
Arcades – Mario (4)
NES – Peach (24)
SNES – Diddy Kong (6)
N64 – Sheik (4)
GC – Bowser Jr. (4)
Wii – Rosalina & Luma (6)
Wii U – Alph (1)
GB – Wario (9)
GBC – Pichu (1)
GBA – Zero Suit Samus (3)
DS – Lucario (1)
3DS – Greninja (4)
VB
MSX – Snake (1)
SMS – Sonic (1)

VB is the only Nintendo console that still needs a rep. Teleroboxer please

(also Mega Man is the only third-party character to originate on a Nintendo console)

I also suppose that counting Alph as a Wii U rep is a bit of a copout, but hey, Shovel Knight would fix that now wouldn't it?

Smash is still Smash and for some people it may be their first chance to play with the new DLC characters

That's a waste of space that could be used for games that are coming out in the future. The amount of sales they'll get of 3 month old DLC isn't really worth the effort or space required to set up Smash demo units.

They had Smash units reserved for E3 as well, and they were used to show off the new DLC.

Splatoon is there showing off a new update.

The Tamaki video mentions Shovel Knight would be revealed sometime in the next two months. The stuff about PAX and Nindies is speculation.

Ah ok. But given they said the megaton is coming this week, and they'll be at the nindies event tomorrow, I'd say that's the most likely time. Even if it's not there, I can't see this not being the megaton if true, so it'd have to be at Pax

Dark Pit and Lucina already cheapened the roster, if anything Shovel Knight would improve it. So what if he is an indie character? Still a great character from a great game (unlike Lucina :p) and being playable in Smash would only help strengthening the Shovel Knight IP.

Clones aren't the same as new characters. And just being from a good game isn't really enough. The characters in Smash have so far been either:

A. Nintendo-owned
B. Legendary third-party characters

So, in terms of third-party characters at least, it would be a quite a downgrade to go from gaming all-stars like Pac-Man and Sonic to a character that has had one game.

Having the Shovel Knight amiibo to unlock the extra content for the Wii U and 3DS versions of Shovel Knight would be kind of a dick move.

Sony got the Kratos boss fight and Xbox got the Battletoads stage for free.

You're getting into dangerous territory. The "this hasn't happened yet" territory. Remember when B. wasn't true? Remember when suggesting that B. could occur made you an easy target for mockery?

I mean if the argument is made that Shovel Knight is an upcoming star that Nintendo and YCG are partnering to have him be pushed via Smash as DLC it makes sense. Using Smash to advertise upcoming games or to get characters into the limelight has happened in pretty much every game starting with Melee.

But it'd double as an Amiibo that works in other games (Super Mario Maker for example).

I just had a thought, what if the Megaton announcement is that the WiiU version of Shovel Knight will get amiibo support, not a SK amiibo itself (though that is still possible) but support for a few major characters like Mario, Link, Pikachu, etc that enables them to be used in the upcoming 4 player smash esque battle mode the console versions are getting. Would be a pretty big megaton for the WiiU version and be special exclusive content that we're not expecting.

What we really need is to have the Smash roster in Shovel Knight

This or Shovel Knight getting an Amiibo have been the most assumed news really.

"Smash Bros. is just for advertisement"

Honestly, I kind of never believed that.

What I mean is, do people think characters like Little Mac, Palutena or Robin were put in to advertise PO!! Wii, KIU, and FEA? All these games were out for a good few years before the time Smash 4 was released. Why would they need "advertising"? Outside of like maybe some Pokemon and Roy (who was an easy clone character anyway), I don't think Sakurai puts in random characters for the sake of advertisement or whatever.

FE:A came out only a year and a half before Smash. Development of the roster began around its release.

What would Nintendo have to gain from such a deal? Shovel Knight isn't an exclusive anymore.
