Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

I'd be somewhat saddened that it would probably mean that K. Rool - and possibly Wolf - would be absent (according to the data we have only two more slots for characters), but at least it would be for a very cool character.

Ugh. Still haven't played its game but it would be completely undeserved. If they're going for an indie representative, the choice should be pretty obvious: Quote from Cave Story. Probably the most famous indie game, has appeared in every platform under the sun (including Wii, DSi and 3DS) and it even has a 3D remake exclusive to 3DS.
Minecraft is the most popular/famous indie game. If there's any character that would make more sense than Shovel Knight, it'd be Shantae. Only because she has a longer history on Nintendo platforms.

Oh man that hadn't even occurred to me.

Following the trend pf characters been announced/released every 2 months, there might be an announcement soon. And apparently this will be annpunced in a week.

Would be interesting and cool, plus serves as cross-promotion for the retail release. Who knows.

:P

I think a valid complaint - not my own - is that we're getting a lot of third-party characters as DLC if both rumours are true. Ryu, Professor Layton, and Shovel Knight. Then we've got three past characters (Lucas, Roy, and Mewtwo). I could see people being frustrated that they didn't get Wolf, or that none of the newcomers were Nintendo characters.

I can't say I wouldn't exchange the third-party DLC for King Hippo, Tingle, and Captain Syrup.

Is Shantae even indie? Wayforward likes to pretend they're indie, but they're more of a middle sized developer, they land a lot of fairly large licenses to make games. Like Batman and Disney.

I think Cave Story or Bit Trip are the two biggest Nintendo indies, as far as being iconic indie series that are also iconic as being Nintendo focused series. They're also both old at this point.

Remember, it's Bit Trip that has a trophy in Smash already. Bit Trip started on Nintendo. Charles Martinet narrates Runner 2. Bit Trip is known in Japan.

I'd honestly would pick Commander Video if I was selecting an indie rep. When I think of Nintendo indies, he's the first that comes to mind.

I think Shantae is kind of a grey indie.

Yeah, "most popular indie game" isn't exactly accurate when refering to Cave Story nowadays, but I'd say that was the case before the indie boom.

I don't know, I just can wrap my head around adding a character with only game (no matter how good it is) and which isn't even exclusive to Nintendo platforms.

Calling Mojang indie is like calling Ravio indie.

You shouldn't do it. Since when are Indie developers multi-billion dollar media juggernauts? And they're owned by Microsoft now, so they're not even independent.

It may have started indie, but at some point it stops being one and starts just becoming a real developer.

It launched first on Nintendo, is super popular right now, and unlike Cave Story, actually has a future.

Minecraft was definitely indie when it was created. But honestly, indie is an incredibly vague term these days anyways

I would say that the continued works of Mojang are not indie, but Minecraft started as indie, as did Steve. I mean really, can any one character be the Mario of indies without also being too popular to be an indie?

The pointers referring to the two extra slots are meaningless. They can always add more pointers in another patch.

Yep. There were only two pointers to new stages when the stages were leaked as well, and we ended up getting two more. And probably more still to come.

The pointers are meaningless. It's more concerning that the Wii U CSS might get too crowded to work right, but that's not an issue for a few more characters.

Not enough to warrant a spot in the roster, at least not for now in my opinion. I do have to say I'm quite restrictive when it comes to third party newcomers, and I wouldn't add Shantae or Quote.

Well, I think this game finally has it's subtitle:

"Super Smash Bros Fuck It Everyone is In This Game Now Even That Guy"

Seems like he'd be cool! I'd rather some other characters, but as long as Shovel Knight wasn't the only one, I'd be more than cool with him.

Inklings when?
Either as DLC now or in Smash 5. The Inklings will come, it's only a matter of when.

That being said, where did the "only 2 more DLC characters" rumor come from? I know there were the 2 placeholder slots in the 3DS data early on, but someone on GAF implied that new info came out about there only being 2 more DLC characters.

But yeah, Shovel Knight is a good pick IMO. Ideally I'd like to see it end up as

Squirtle
Bulbasaur
Professor Layton
Shovel Knight
Mewtwo
Ryu
Roy
Lucas
Wolf
King K. Rool
Isaac
Isabelle

And then for Smash 5 have the Inklings, Dixie Kong, King Hippo, Captain Syrup, and Tingle :v

(13 characters is obviously wishful thinking, more realistically we'll just see 8 or 9 at most)

The pointers referring to the two extra slots are meaningless. They can always add more pointers in another patch.

This is true, but it's safer to assume that this is it for new characters than to hope for more and get less.

Until he's playable.

TBH, people said that Capcom wouldn't get a second rep. That Dark Pit wouldn't be playable. That Villager couldn't be playable. Too many attempts at factual declaration for my tastes.

At this point, Capcom has a rep for MH in AC. :P They'll get more reps if this partnership continues.

I don't think an MH character will be playable - the MH devs are as protective of the license as TPC is of Pokemon. They wouldn't let the MvC devs use a Monster Hunter rep for instance.

even ignoring that SK is an odd character that doesn't fit with the other third parties, there a few other weird parts of this leak.

Why is the Shovel Knight Amiibo coming out so far ahead of all the other DLC Amiibo?

Why didn't these shops have listings for Roy, Lucas and Ryu? Or even other DLC beyond even Shovel Knight?

This is kind of weird. Ryu, Roy and Lucas' Amiibos haven't even been formerly shown off yet, and Shovel Knight already has a listing for stores?

Perhaps the Shovel Knight Amiibo is being fast-tracked to meet an upcoming, relevant release on the Wii U and/or 3DS?

Remember the "good old days" of Smash leaks? We actually had pictures to analyze. Even then people weren't sold on Palutena and others.

Now we're down to text about:
- How the Smash ballot exists
- How there was some trace of European amiibo metadata
- an Indie developer making an announcement.

How far we've come.

Smash hype cycles were never meant to last this long. Even when Sakurai/Nintendo says they are done with Smash 4 DLC, the speculation will just jump to Smash NX. This hype train is like Snowpiercer.

*nods* Right after Brawl released, the first thing a lot of people did was to start talking about what Smash 4 will have.

Parts of the "big leak" that revealed the entire Smash roster were actually leaked as a text post a month and a half prior to the ESRB leak. Barely anyone believed it. They didn't even believe it after Lucina and Robin were revealed.

Brawl's entire roster was leaked via a simple text post nobody believed because Toon Link was ridiculous and sounded made up. They said it was fake because Toon Link was stupid and a bunch of "obvious" characters were missing like Mega Man.

Not all text leaks are necessarily fake by nature. And text leaks aren't new to Smash at all.

Maybe. Just weird, since they would have had to have planned this for awhile to be able to get the Amiibo production going early.

Anyway: Here's Gamexplain's video on the leak: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_T0eMrCz0o

One possibility is that Shovel Knight has been a planned promotional thing since very early on, perhaps as part of the same outreach they did to add Commander Video to Smash as a trophy? Also, the Shovel Knight DLC is coming up, so the timing would certainly make sense both for the character and the amiibo.

There's also the possibility that Nintendo has a deal for an exclusive game from Yacht Club Games, or even a timed exclusive for a Shovel Knight sequel.
