Skullface was like a Saturday morning cartoon villain stuck with a super serious rival who rarely speaks. It's a weird combo.

Yeah the look is cool. That's pretty much it.

I don#t know, overall it's a pretty great game, despite the story grievances. If this wasn't called MGS I probably wouldn't even complain about the story at all.
I love the game haha. Gameplay is fantastic. Missions and too samey though. It's standard open world padding for a lot of it but you get some really great missions out of the freedom you're afforded. I'm mostly talking about the story and the ending in particular.

I found him to b a super uninteresting character with dumb motivation. Worst main villain the series might have had.

No, you see, Skull Face really hates language. He hates the english language so much that when he talks, it's like he's channeling Shakespeare himself. He's the greatest character in the game. He talks poignantly with the grace of a High Wizard. If MGS was Lord of the Rings, he would be Sauron throwing fireballs of language all over the place. If this was Star Wars, he would be Obi-Wan Kenobi with his saber of words.

Skull Face in essence, represents humanity. Just like the tower of Babylon, he wanted to deny God his existence by climbing to the sky with Sahelnathropus but he was struck down by Venom Christ before he could reach the top. So like Lucifer, he took the parasite of language and infected people. Because he didn't want them to speak languages except the one he chose.

Skull Face is the true hero of Metal Gear Solid, and it's a shame that you couldn't hear it for yourself.

This thread has made me go full 180 and now I love Skullface.
This post did it for me. Impeccable.

I haven't gone through the whole thread yet, but I thought I was in a minority in not liking the game. :P
I think the story and characters are mostly a mess and the worst in the series (although 18-31 is an okayish story) but the gameplay is stellar and as a game, it's incredibly enjoyable.

It's just very frustrating to not have an unambiguously incredible game.

This is probably a stupid question but I just got the true ending and there's one element of the story in particular that keeps bugging me :

What was the purpose of the attack on Mother Base in Ground Zeroes ? I know there were concerns because of the nuke but who made the decision to attack Big Boss and why ? How did that advance Skull Face's plans in any way ?

I'm sorry if I just missed something very obvious but I just can't recall if that was ever explained...

Skull Face wanted Big Boss dead because he hated him, since Zero used to order him to keep an eye on Snake, protect him and ensure that he would always succeed in his missions.

A fucking terrible excuse to hate a man. But hey, that's Kojima for you.

Finished it all. Headache. Kojima just clearly lost the plot again with this game, the vision was beyond him and its like the polar opposite to MGS4: too MUCH gameplay, not enough story. Not enough wrap up either. Mother Base should always have been the African Outer Heaven and not out at sea again, and the game should have ended with Solid Snake dropping in to destroy it and Boss. That it didn't, and we didn't even get the Eli Island of the Flies stuff is a real failing.

Happy he's cut free of MGS and Konami now and will never again be able to make something so bloated. Still want him on games, but just... more contained. Like I think I walked out of Peace Walker with a more satisfied feeling really?

You became Kojima, for such little memes as that?

WHOOOO

I won't scatter your memes to the heartless internet. *dabs memes around mouth*

Oh right, I remember him mentioning that before the final boss fight of chapter one. I didn't realize that it was supposed to be the justification for such a large scale attack.

It's a fuckin helicopter how hard can it be to detect there is a kid sneaking in with what little cargo it can carry.

You think a clone of big boss can't sneak wherever he damn well pleases?

Huey probably snuck him in something then cried about how he didn't do it in another interrogation. I hope he was slowly eaten by bloodthirsty seals at sea.

Alot of people are disappointed that we were tricked into thinking we would play as BB...but Big Boss, has always been an idea. Big Boss is a concept. There is Big Boss we play as in 3 and PW, but he doesnt live up to the idea and legend of BB.

What has been boiled into us since MGS is that Big Boss is something to strive for. Liquid wanted to emulate him, because having his Genes isnt enough. Passing in Big Bosses Memes is only part of it. Even Solidus wants to surpass Big Boss. Its something he strives for. The Scene doesnt matter, it shapes a person but even Big Boss wasnt fully shaped by operation snake eater, it wasnt until Peace Walkers events that he accepted the moniker. By then, the idea of Big Boss had already grown into something even greater.

And this game is the final knife into the wound. A character as you shape him, takes on the role of Big Boss. He does things youd expect the real Big Boss would do, until the reveal he is Big Boss all things considered. Big Boss is an idea. Like language it is something that varies between people. Big Boss is a warmonger, a traitor, a murderer, a leader, a soldier, a mentor. Its an idea Zero wanted to keep alive. He calls him a friend, but truth is it mightve been more of an obsession.

Thats my analysis of the plot. Big Boss is an idea. By Liquid, Solidus, Ocelot it was something to strive for. Solid Snake knew the truth and rejected the idea of Big Boss. He was just another murderer.

This game solidifies Solid Snake as a character whilst making his brothers look the fool.

Pretty much. In all of the games the word legend is probably said 10000000000 times.

then remenber Huey almost killed Emma when he drowned himself.
I think Huey would've killed the Boss no problems too

Welcome to Metal Gear. There's a boss who shoots bees out of his mouth.

This made me laugh out loud.

It's fucking true though. Pretty much every unresolved or stupid elements of this game can be resolved in just the same way as all the other dumb Kojima stuff.

"Because fuck you"

"Nanomachines"

"Parasites, son"

Hahahaha that would have been a fitting end for him.

Speaking of Huey, how was he kneeling down and balancing himself on his knees in that trial scene without his exo? his lower body doesn't functions due to issues with his spine.

He didn't, but Otacon started an affair with his wife which caused Huey to drown himself in their pool.

People may have felt sorry for his dad in MGS2 but, as it turns out, he deserved it.

If Konami decided to continue past MGS4/MGR on the timeline, then I'd say they might as well turn Otacon heel. Dude's been through enough shit to justify it 10 times over at this point.

Story aside, game is amazingly fun. I started playing around 12:00 and said to myself I was going to stop at 2:00 and now it's 7:15 lol.

I definitely agree that the gameplay is fantastic, but the missions tend to get repetitive down the line. And the open world feels so barren. Is it just me or did they mess up the transition to open world a bit?

90 hours here and still playing, will be doing so for a while.

For their first effort, it's fucking impressive. Which is sad really when you think about it because it's always going to be a first effort, no chance for a second go.

You poor misguided fool. That was a Seal hypnotised by Cypher to think it was Huey and parasites to give it a human body.

Otacon constructed EXCELSUS. Why do you think he's not there in either Raiden's support or with Sunny? He build a new mech with the sole intention of making sure Armstrong had access to a mech and the nanomachines, son. The whole child kidnapping thing was Otacon's idea.... Otacon, the true villain of the Metal Gear universe. Once Snake died there was no one to keep him in check.

Fucking Kojima strikes again. THE RUSE NEVER DIES, CAN'T WASH THESE TEARS FROM MY EYES!

In fact the real Huey took the pseudonym of Dr. Madnar and moved to Europe after the events of V. He later met Naomi and Sunny, whom he tried to drown in exchange for the transfusion machine. Naomi successfully seduced him and obtained the machine that way. The circle now complete, Huey slept with Otacons lover this time around.

Yep its a great set up for the fantastic open world Zanzibarland remake of MG2 that we're never going to get.

I really dont know how i feel about the twist. I dont want to say it ruined the game for me, because i was loving it up to this point, but i think it might have.
