It took me 300k heroism to see any S rank soldiers. I'm nearly at 500k and I still haven't seen any S+ or S++. Game doesn't not smile on me.

Usually found at least one S rank soldier with 130k-ish heroism. However, I just passed 180k (got 30k heroism, don't know why though) and now I'm getting volunteers with S rank.

Certain milestones - such as beating all missions - give you a big bonus.

Does the story in this game even matter at all? I haven't played MGSV, but by reading impressions I'm getting the idea that the story is completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things and doesn't push the overall MGS narrative forward at all. Like, why should we care about these meaningless events the game is talking about?

No it doesn't matter and doesn't change anything for future games in the timeline. No, you shouldn't care about any Metal Gear Solid story past 3.

yes and no, as usual.

it ties in and kinda explains some stuff near the very end, but also, eh

Is there a place outside of the Mission Complete screen that shows you stats like Heroism and such?

I guess you could argue that the story is irrelevant except for one small fact, that you kill the phantom in mg1. Other than that there is very little development or story for any characters. Not ocelot, not Miller, no sigint, little zero, no Eva, wasted opportunity with Eli, the list goes on.

im beginning to see that the more this game gets analyzed and broken down, it's rather hollow and doesn't really advance or add much to the lore.

I'm officially retiring my post-Quiet save. I've set the chopper music to Quiet's theme. V's current outfit is his sneaking suit as it's the darkest thing he owns. I visited her cell one last time hoping to the heavens that Quiet was still there, but no matter how much I pressed my R&D team, my NVG's just couldn't find her between the bars anymore.

She's gone. Lost. Alone, so that we may live. So that the world may live. Like her last months, her legacy will remain what it is. Silence. Slinking away into the recesses of Diamond Dogs memory until it is no longer a legend, but a myth.

The recruits may forget with time, but I won't let them. No matter how hard I try, her loss won't stop hurting. She is my phantom pain, and there's no parasite, no prosthetic, nor science that will let me forget that. It is not through language that she will continue to exist, but in memory.

Have you tried nanomachines yet?

Just saw on Reddit, and can't confirm at th moment, that in the ACC window you see a reflection but it isn't BB, it's your avatar! Can someone look, into this?

Did the Hayter believers believe up till the very end?
My idiocy ran deep, and when I was replaying the hospital scene, I made myself believe that the grunts of Venom getting hit and running into things sounded just like Hayter in preparation for a reveal.

And now my last shred of belief is that there were plans on the table for ten year old Solid to show up and Hayter to somehow suck up some helium and give him a handful of lines, but that just goes to show how shoe-horned in Hayter's involvement with the story would be.

Seeing the Paz story a little deeper, it makes more sense for the medic to feel guilt about her death rather than Big Boss.

On the opening cutscene in GZ, after Miller tells Snake about Paz he responds with "So, what's the plan, silence her before we're compromised?" it seems as Snake has no problem on killing her himself at that point.

The medic checked her personally, not founding the second bomb is why she died, makes him guilty. You can see that in the cutscene after finding Paz, the flashback to GZ on how after Snake tells him to check her again, he founds it almost immedeatly, as if he maybe felt the bomb prior, but wasn't sure it was an actual bomb, he revised history on his mind and actually did it.

shit here I was farming side ops so I could have better gear for S-ranking stuff

Leave Side Ops until later. You want high heroism so you can extract high rank soldiers while doing them. S Ranking most missions comes down to strategy rather than gear, except fire fights.

Yeah, I talked about it in an earlier post

Quoting myself:

As for the whole Venom Snake thing. I had hoped that it was not the case that you weren't actually a double, even though, let's be honest it was pretty obvious, if not from the trailers, then from the heavy handed opening where you give a name and create an avatar. Who you were was by process of elimination the medic, so I wasn't shocked by that. I did however find myself OK with the twist though. Venom doesn't act like the Big Boss we knew, something that is abundantly clear when you go through episode 46. I also find myself LIKING Venom a whole lot. He's not motivated by vengeance, or at least not entirely, but a lot of his motivation is guilt. He wasn't able to save Miller and Boss due to not finding the second Bomb in Paz. He's clearly not consciously aware of it, but it shows through in his actions. He WANTS to save people, Quiet, the kids, even Huey gets spared.

I found the stuff with Paz might be the most important character beat for him in the game. He rewrote his whole memory of events into making the right call and saving her. It's just ironic that he didn't know that no matter what, she was going to die, they had removed far too many internal organs, she had hours left according to the tapes. But that explosion nearly killed Boss, killed Chico, and crippled him. And he has to walk around with bits of Paz in him at all times. Kinda fucked when you think about it. The stuff also implies that medic might have had a thing for her, but that could just be me.

Before the game came out, I thought all the enemy bosses in the game were going to be possible illusions, causing us to never quite know what was real or not, and allowing Kojima to make the fights as fun as desired without having them to be realistic. In fact I thought the whole game would play on this theme, where even some enemies would be possible illusions. For some reason the hospital scene looked like a dream, and I thought the whole game would feel like that.

Volgin on the unicorn, the giant whale, on fire, the lightning bolt, Mantis, I thought it was a hint of it. I even thought Big Boss and SF might be the same person, some sort of Tyler Durden thing, due to the XOF unit, SF having a scar where V had a horn, etc. I thought SF might be the demon inside BB himself, trying to take over BB's own mind by fighting against his own soldeirs using his own "mirrored" PMC.

I knew it couldn't be the case, but even in TPP I thought it could still be true until the Metal Gear part where obviously he's really there. Even the car ride made sense: BB says nothing cause he's talking to himself! His soldeirs just don't dare say hey who are you talking to :p

I kind of wish that's what it would have been. A literal demon inside BB, a split personality taking over, never quite entirely, but enough so to remain there until SS kills BB. It would explain why BB can be such a hero one moment, and then say stuff like sending kids back on the battlefield is fine.

:(
This is exactly what I thought too. I think a lot of us did and wish it ended up this way. But no we got LITERAL fire whales in the sky and unicorns

So just to make sure, if I have maxed out my affinity with Quiet, I can't EVER remove my butterfly emblem or she'll leave, right?

I'm so bored of that stupid emblem.

Is it true you can see your created avatar's face in the helicopter window reflection? If so, I'm confused. I thought you were just designing your ideal face for the reconstructive surgery that never happened.

The face you create is supposed to be the Medic's real face before he was turned into Venom.

i was bored so....

Amazing. Love this.

I do like Venom Snake but this is seriously great.

By This structure it should go
Prologue = ground zeroes
Chapter 1 = Awakening
Chapter 2 = Afghanistan
Chapter 3 = Africa
Chapter 4 = Skull face
Chapter 5 = Eli/Quiet conclusions (fate)
Chapter 6 = The Truth
Epilogue = Ocelot/Miller/ Venom conclusions (Fate)

I see it working better this way.

Supposibly in the japanese version datamine, the game was suppose to be 5 chapters. Ca anyone confirm?

You're right, this is structured way better. However, I feel like Skull Face and The Truth should be linked closer together. It would pack way more dramatic impact if in the final confrontation with Skull Face, the truth somehow comes out.

If Skull Face isn't at the end, the rest feels super-meandering... it's a poor structural choice.

Maybe they should have spread the game out over several years/months instead, so...

Prologue = Ground Zeroes (1974)
Chapter 1 = Awakening (Early 1984)
Chapter 2 = Afghanistan (Early 1984) - Meet up with Huey, Quiet, and Eli.
Chapter 3 = Africa (Late 1984)
Chapter 4 = Eli/Mantis/Huey (1985) - Conclude this with Kingdom of the Flies (I think there's more impact here if we still think The Phantom is Naked Snake, because Eli believes that too). Huey's trial and exile.
Chapter 5 = Skull Face - Final Confrontation (Late 1985)
Chapter 6 = The Truth (Late 1985) - This should be tied with the above Skull Face chapter. Following the confrontation, the Truth comes out... existential crisis? This should be the most mind-trippy chapter, where Venom's mind becomes shattered and rebuilt at the revelation and the post-hypnotic suggestions breaking, along with the previous assaults by Mantis finally taking their toll on him.
Epilogue = Quiet/Ocelot/Miller/Venom conclusions (Fate) - 1985/1986 - The final tape should be the excised one that Venom Snake narrates to an absent Big Boss.
Post-Epilogue... 1995. A glimpse of Outer Heaven.

It's kinda amazing nobody noticed that scene in the trailers where Big Boss goes into his coma blatantly didn't have any head shrapmetal, both in the trailer in 2014 and in the most recent 2015 trailer at E3.

Honestly as we look into everything, this has some decent Fight Club esq revelations about play on words and blatant foreshadowing that nobody really picked up on till we knew the twist.
*cough*

And a bit more recently (but still over a year ago)...

Venom is actually a great character... wholly different from every other protagonist, but not executed well.

This really should be the final words echoed over a 1995 post-epilogue scene.

He really would be, if he spoke more than 5 times the whole game. The cut dialogue is really really good, which makes it a mystery as to why it was cut.

Where can I find the cut dialogue, for future reference?

Just read the ending to Quiet's story. Fuck me that actually sounds dramatic and compelling in a way. Look forward to seeing how well it is or isn't pulled off.

I was thinking if there was a psuedo MG1 remake, it'd be Solid Snake having boss fights against probably an AI D-Walker, D-Dog, Venom Snake?

It'd be interesting.

I'm not quite sure if emblems are spoilers, but I've tried a few out and this one fits right. I've seen some creative ones too. Mine just feels basic. I'd like to see everyone else's.

I didn't get to see the Paz scenes at all. I'm kinda bummed I didn't go around MB more except a few places here and there.
