Destiny - The Taken King |OT| Time to Explain

It's not like getting good gear is hard. It's been easy as hell since HoW and now with infusion it'll be even easier in regards to under leveled gear you want to upgrade. Guaranteed gear from venders is a thing too. Rng has been updated. Light system has been dramatically updated. Vanilla destiny this is not.

Plus, Bungie is actually trying to encourage us into having multiple sets of armor for various occasions. Thus they're giving it out more often.

Whereas before, everyone was basically wearing raid gear/trials gear and 1 exotic.

And in regards to high level gear
its reforgeable
no need to farm for dupe armor.

I'm personally waiting because that's a ton of free experience just waiting to be used towards leveling up your character level, as well as unlocking upgrades to your subclass.

Glad to know I'm not alone there. If leveling up in TTK ASAP is the goal, then holding off on doing these quests seems to be the best solution.

Think I will do the same.
Seems like throwing XP out the window. Of course with how hard they seems to be, maybe I don't want to spend my first 6 hours next week trying to do these god awful quests

The way the game is throwing out XP kind of confirms my fears about this "new" leveling system.

We'll all be 40 within a day of TTK release, and won't be able to do hard stuff like the raid until we get certain drops that raise our light level.

Despite all the talk, it really is the EXACT same system with a different way to count. Sigh.

The issue is not that you need to level to do higher end stuff, is that you stop leveling in the traditional sense and you become dependant on drops. Meaning the time you put in is completely random and could mean nothing.

FFS, just make the level cap 80 or 100 and do away with this light nonsense.

Idk why anyone thought it was going to be any different, it really confused me. It's literally the exact same system except it allows for smaller increments in your light level so its harder for one piece of gear to screw you over. People have been hyping the new leveling system since it was announced, but its literally exactly what we have now.

We'll see, still looks like a grind fest to me. The more it changes the more it stays the same and all that.

Shame to hear that. Upon hearing of the revised level system in TTK I actually hoped that it would be able to draw me back into the game. But if it's still the same and the base number is just higher then it's nothing more than smoke and mirrors to me. If Destiny did away with the light levels, and just used "normal" levels I would've probably ended up really liking it.

Will give it a shot later, but this has certainly put a damper on my hopes.

When vanilla Destiny shipped, you were blocked at level 29 unless you got a full set of raid gear. No boots, no level 30, RNGesus be blessed. Now:

10 item slots contribute to your light level (primary weapon, special weapon, heavy weapon, ghost shell, helm, armor, gauntlets, boots, class item, artifact). You won't be chasing one item to get over the light requirement - a good weapon might be what pushes you over. Or a helm. Or a ghost.

A large proportion of the weapons now drop from dedicated loot streams, and in particular quest lines. (For example, all swords come from quests, not RNG.) There are apparently a LOT of quests (most of the new achievements are for completing the high end quest lines). Any legendary weapon or armor item can be ascended via finding higher level gear for that slot, so you can pick what stuff to carry up to that level.

Legendary engrams are guaranteed from the weekly playlist; the Cryptarch sells them; faction packages guarantee a legendary item; the Gunsmith will sell weapons for order from a rotating stock via Armsday. Perhaps most crucially, RNG systems have been updated across the board to watch what you have, and don't, and tip toward what you don't have. This made a huge difference in the drop rates for Crota's End, and is said to have been tuned even further for TTK.

It's the same as the old system in that gear makes you more powerful. It's not the same as the old system in what makes you powerful, or how you get the gear. Bungie has been vocal about avoiding the walls people hit at level 29 in the vanilla game, and have redesigned the loot streams to avoid it with TTK. We'll see how effective it is, but on paper they really are not the same.

It's not though.

Like you said, before 1 single piece of gear could screw you over. If you couldn't get a piece of gear to hit level 34, chances are you weren't ever going to see Skolas (the end PvE content for House of Wolves).

Because before, light levels were hard set for variables. A level 33 did 33% less damage to an enemy than a level 34 did. Didn't matter if he was level 33.9 or 33.1, he still didn't 33% less damage. Plus took more damage as well.

In the new system, because your light is an average of all your gear, you will see the game being more forgiving about where you can do specific activities.

This gives players more freedom for growth and customization, because a few light points aren't anywhere near as powerful as they used to be.

Edit: Zoba has this nice little chart comparing the two systems, I'll see if I can get him to post it.

I was thinking about doing the Quests for each character but hmm seems rewards are XP so better not touch that until I can start leveling up to 40

Well, its not really different than any other similar game. You hit max level, then continue to improve your gear. You still have a "light" level, but it isn't as jumpy now where one piece of gear would drastically alter your power.

The game has always been and probably always will be hit max level and then get higher tiers of gear. The set up now is better than it was, but its still the same fundamental concept.

It's not though.

Oh yea, its for sure better than it was, but the core concept is still the same. Hit the max exp level, then improve your gear. You just won't be screwed now because you never get one specific piece since each individual item matters less. People had this weird reaction to it though like it was some completely new game changing system when its not really all that different.

People have been gaining 3 or 4 levels in a single hour right now. I don't think you need to hoard anything in this situation. Not even exaggerating.

Why make a loot game if the loot is going to be made irrelevant by XP levels? What is the difference between grinding for loot and grinding to get an extra 40 levels of XP?

People will be ready to raid on the day of release, most likely.

Yeah i noticed that too. This new way of leveling up is kinda pointless if the game still needs the light levels etc.

Here we go:

In the old system, only a level 33 or 34 could do level 35 content.

In the new system a 148 and up could do 168 content.

Again this gives more freedom.

Also, I'm not 100% on those number as we don't know how damage drop offs work yet, but you get the idea.

Yup, I left destiny as even when I topped kills in VOG hard mode, I Never got a single raid armoir piece with all 3 characters...I had enough and played Inquisition.

I came back half way through HOW, and every raid I did I dropped a gun or armour I did not have...It did not take long to get them all.

It was such a change, and now they have gone further with quests.

Think of it as when you earned the thorn and multiply by 10, all of your progress is up to you now. Thank god.

they could nerf this XP love at anytime :(

I hope they don't I want to try a really strong guardian for once, not just brute forcing mission by dying 20 times

Is there any point in playing vanilla destiny right now? Haven't seen a legendary drop in the crucible all day, vanguard legacy gives no rewards. Can you lvl over 34? I don't seem to be gaining any more experience. The game seems in limbo for 5 days...

It's essentially a normal loot system in an MMO these days, which is what people wanted initially and makes the leveling system way more palatable and less frustrating. Look at WoW for example, you hit max level then get gear with higher ilvl (item level) to make your character stronger, with each piece of gear simply making your ilvl higher, and gear is gained via predictable rewards in a common sense way. ilvl=Light level now essentially.

How do I access my year one preorder Ghost shell item for a new character? There is no more special orders vendor..

There's kiosk near the GILF that would sell Shaders where you'll find that stuff I believe.

Also, is anyone else on XB1 getting a bunch of connection issues? I keep getting removed from the game world.

Probably covered, but is anyone else holding off on the various quests sitting at the quest board that have you replaying the entire story? I figure in TTK you level up by gaining experience and once you have your new subclass unlocked you'll likely need a ton of experience to upgrade it as well. My fireteam and I began running the story missions for one character and got up to to the first mission back in the Cosmodrone to get the ship part when we figured out we should stop.

So... are we missing something, or is it really best to just wait until next week?

I'm waiting for my current characters, but not sure if I would be better of starting my new character now or wait until TTK and stack all that quest experience on top already being boosted level 25.

Apologies if this has already been asked/answered, but when you're done with the testing for one of the gunsmith's weapons, do you just discard it?

Can I no longer buy the FWC emblems?... I always swore I would farm FWC rep for that sweet rank 3 emblem and now I am kicking myself for not doing it

wow Adam Boyles just did this playstation stream for Destiny hour long on twitch TV right had some 20k people watching.

in all their smartness they start putting out $10 one use only codes that are only redeemable on the console so I'm watching on the PC decide zomg $10 gift code

I'm a freaking monkey I first tried to enter codes on PC playstation store right since I'm watching this damn thing on my computer. Codes only redeemable on console ok so I write down some older codes that have passed thru chatroom and rush out to living room codes used......*start fuming* come back to screen write down a one brand new code RUSH run out to console still code used. Tried that six times every time lost out to someone faster than me or some person with their console next to the computer or just some chatroom bot I dunno.

Now I'm angry at Playstation for using this one use $10 code system giveaway.

Oh yeah you can only talk in the twitch chatroom if your logged in thru Facebook. that just tops of the big FUCK YOU peasant.

It be nice they let us save presets for equipment so we don't have to change each piece individually unless we want to.

If you care about moments of triumph, keep in mind that any progress completed on a character will be deleted along with the character.

Faction emblems can no longer be purchased directly from their respective vendors, they now roll with their faction packages.

I only have two characters so the third won't change anything. I did complete every challenge. Thanks though.

So is the faction pledging in effect now? I was planning to edge a few this week. At least I no longer have to be concerned with switching class items any more.

Is there a big xbox community here for this game? I have the PS4 version but a few friends of mine are getting TTK on X1 and I wanna join em so just curious.

Thanks!

The changes have been great. The new weapon armory is going to promote variety.
Great OP :]

I like that change.
Kind of weird that they switched to step leveling with Int, Dis and Str.

I think it works better with tiers for skill cooldowns, they also changed bad/good min and maxing each type helps you so you feel a bigger change in using different gear setups.
