Destiny The Taken King Review Thread

destinylfg.com

Xbox does have a harder time for sure. Have you tried r/fireteams? Between gaf and r/fireteams I see quite a few Xbox posts.

You're right about matchmaking in essence however it's just not that simple and I think will be very hard for bungie to implement in a meaningful way into destiny. The average match made player in destiny is TERRIBLE. The weekly strike matchmaking was so bad for me at times I wish I could just solo it. Now take that into a raid or nightfall strike and yeesh.

All that being said I hope bungie does something for people like you who do want matchmaking.

Thanks I will look into it. And honestly I have never experience any problem playing weekly strike. Matchmaking is great for things they already have.

I'd imagine that now that Nightfall no longer boots to orbit upon wiping, matchmaking will be added in relatively short order.

Raids are tough though, with no respawning, people can sit there for extended periods of time, dead, unable to talk to their teammates if they aren't on the same voice channel.

That doesn't exactly make for a fun experience, IMO.

I feel like these reviews only consider the campaign missions (which are excellent) and leveling process to 40, but not the end game.

The legendary marks system is terrible. 75 of those fucks for Gauntlets? And it still bothers me that you really don't get anything extra for playing well in the crucible.

I got about 75 of them yesterday. Try and do the missions that give them as a reward also if you put experience into year two legendaries and dismantle them they give more marks.

It still is kind of grindy though for sure. Daily also is 15 marks

Who cares?

With the new loot system you should be swimming in gear and as your light level steadily increases so too does the gear that drops

Just play the game and forget about marks once you earn all the weekly ones. Plus You have factions packages that give legendaries (make sure your light is as high as it can be for hte rolls) armsday orders, and I hear those new strikes are pretty generous with the loot

Yea, I'll have to do that I guess.

I wouldn't even mind grindy so much, but the crucible rewards thus far seem to be completely tied to RNG, which is unfortunate. I really enjoy the PvP, but the rest of the game is lacking at end game for me. Maybe I'll try more raiding this time around.

Thats interesting.... I mean crucible has always been all over the place when it comes to drops

There is the Weekly Crucible (nightfall-like reward) thats guaranteed if you complete all 5 bounties

Boy it sure feels good to be playing Destiny again. I have over 200 hours logged on a Warlock, but I'm starting to play Titan, and its sure is a nice change of scenery.

It seems that TTK has fixed a large amount of the issues that the original release had, however my only gripe is that they still haven't added any type of in game group finding mechanic, which other MMO-esque games come with as standard. I assume this may be due to memory limitations with the older consoles, and we may see it in the next iteration.

There are quite a few pvp missions. There is one given by the shipwright girl that gives an exotic shotgun. Just look around on the tower. Use the gunsmith too.

People bemoan gamefaqs but for Xbox players they have a whole subforum just for match making, if you were looking for alternator reddit and lfg sites

How many hours of extra content does this expansion provide? I beat Destiny last year and quickly moved on cause i was bored to death by the time i reached the end. Never even cared to play the raids or whatever they're called.

Might actually bite..

What do you mean by "beat"? I'm presuming you meant that you finished the story missions. If that's all you plan on doing, than Taken King probably isn't worth it.

Destiny only really comes alive in raids and other co-op activities. If you don't plan on doing them, you're probably experiencing like 25% of the game.

That's exatcly it, i never cared ablut replaying the same quests over and over and revisiting locations again and again in yet another defend this area type quest. That was my main gripe with vanilla Destiny, the lack of variety in environments and type of missions to do in them.

I suppose I'm in that boat would prefer some sort of matchmaking for raids, nightfalls, etc. I just don't see how it would be overly difficult to implement some sort of LFG system into the game (as opposed to the app or some website).

Said system could have a player's class, character level, light level, an area for comments when the player submits its info into the system, an indicator as to whether the player is using a mic, and possibly even an indicator as to whether the individual has completed the activity they're looking to join before.

Ideally, players would just select which activities they're up for joining and could then browse the LFG system for other players if they're attempting to host a session. If a player isn't up to par or is a nuisance (read: AFKer) then you could simply tell them it's not working out and find another player.

Maybe this is more difficult than it seems, but I feel like Bungie is capable of making this happen. Maybe Destiny 2 or the next big patch will solve this problem.

Sounds like Destiny isn't for you, then, I wouldn't give it another thought.

There's actually a story this time around. And it's kinda good too. I'm impressed do far.

Here's hoping the raid delivers and the whole legendary marks thing doesn't get annoying.

Eh, maybe I'll pick it up on black Friday sales. Fuck paying $60 for an expansion.

Valid point IF you purchased both House of Wolves and The Dark Below DLC. But, the expansion is $40 alone, not $60.

If you're new to the series or just refused to pay $20 for each DLC this is an awesome deal! Granted, the GameStop trade-up promo makes it an even better deal if you fall in the latter.

Otherwise, just wait until there's a sale.

Game is not for you friend, sorry

Jason Schreier's TTK impressions so far are worth reading; he's taking time to play through everything before doing a formal review (imagine that).

The Taken King’s first eight missions, which are delivered through one of these quest-lines, are also indicative of how much Destiny has changed over the past year. No longer do you stand in a room and shoot through waves of enemies; now there exists the type of actual variety you might have expected to see a year ago, with stealth and platforming and interactive objects that you can use to solve rudimentary puzzles. We saw this evolution start with Destiny’s first expansion, The Dark Below, and continue with the second, House of Wolves; now, after a year’s worth of iteration, it finally feels like Destiny is living up to the lofty promises Bungie made when they first announced the game.

Problem is, there’s not much to make fun of anymore. Even the story is interesting—yes, Destiny has a story now!—mostly because the writers have finally figured out how to deliver it. No longer must you suffer through a series of cutscenes in which insufferable people yell enigmatic things at you. Now, characters like Zavala and Eris Morn will talk to each other on the radio, playing off one another and revealing a level of personality I never thought we’d see from the gruff world of Destiny. Ghost replacement Nolan North does a fine job in the role, but Nathan Fillion’s Cayde-6 is the real star of the show; if you’ve ever wanted to shoot aliens while listening to Captain Mal make fun of everyone, this is your game.

As someone who disliked the Year 1 DLC and was quick to point out all the faults in the game itself, TTK deserves all this positive praise because it fixes and improves on so many aspects of the game. It's amazing.

So...if I sold Destiny the first time through, I pick this up, do I start at the beginning with added content? I'm so confused what TKK actually is.

If you could describe what you are confused about, folks can help answer our questions. The Taken King is a very large expansion for Destiny. If you don't have the game, you can get it in a bundle with the base game and prior DLC for $60.

Your Destiny characters are all stored on bungie servers and linked to your gamertag/psn id for your platform.

If you bought the game again, your characters would be available where you left them when you boot the game up.

It's always easier to do nothing than it is to actually try. Same can be said of journalists who don't push them on this. I thought it was funny last month when Game Informer did their questions everyone wanted answered podcast and not a single mention of LFG or clans, two things players constantly ask for. I'm guessing Bungie and Activision made it clear to GI that they weren't allowed to ask about that.

I am confused, so if I got TKK are there new emotes? If so how do I get them, or how do you get new ones in general?

Which version of TTK you bought determines what you get. Most versions don't come with the new emotes. You can buy them separately for (lol) 20 dollars. Yep. 20 dollars. Not a misprint. 3 dances, 3 shaders, 3 pretty useless class items. 20 dollars. Throw your money right at Luke Smith's screen. He's a man of the people.

I just got the regular one, I just assumed the new Kiosk for Emotes meant there would be some I can get....

I still can't believe that shit. 20 f'n dollars! lol Christ Bungie... what the shit happened to you. Was it "just" Activision?

I'd like to just start from scratch–new character and all, just to get a feel for it again seeing as it's been finessed. I suppose Destiny w/TKK expansion is the way to go for me. Thanks!

You have three character slots, If you want to start from scratch, use an empty one, or delete one of your existing characters if you've already got three characters.

lol at the losers on metacritic giving it a 1 and 0. Unfortunately the main game turned it me off by quite a bit, but maybe I will give this franchise another go when Destiny 2 releases. But at this stage, I think they will release expansions for quite some time -_-

Good to see it's being reviewed well. But I'm not spending more money to get this. It seems like this is what Destiny should've been to begin with.

The next time I'll spend money on something Destiny related is probably when the next big expansion like this is out (which will probably be next September), or I might just wait for Destiny 2.

Credit where credit is due to Bungie. Fixed most all of the problems that made me cancel my pre-order way back when with the last expansion, and now it's a game I actually enjoy playing.

Too bad I am only level 26 and it seems like I still need to go through the House of Wolves stuff to level up. That's my one complaint--progression is still pretty cryptic.

Played the hell out of Destiny through the Dark Below, but never picked up House of Wolves. Started playing a new character last week to check out Destiny 2.0 and loved the fixes. Would like to get TTK, but can't justify paying $60 for it.

I'd pick it up at $40, but since I don't have House of Wolves, that's not an option for me. Hoping for a sale price soon. Will be on vacation on Black Friday, so waiting for that seems unlikely.
