Witcher 3 Wins GOTY @ The Game Awards 2015!

See here is the confusion.

I don't have a problem with you, your argument makes perfect sense and if you track my posts back, you'll see I'm essentially saying the same thing.

Where I have a problem is people who praise something like Skyrim for the open world and tell me it is the best thing ever. Then they play TW3 which has everything Skyrim has, in terms of open world and endless exploration, but it has game bits as well.

And then you ask, "so is Skyrim really not that good by comparison?" and they say "no" because all they want is the open world bit and the game bits are irrelevant. Both are hence "amazing" in their eyes. In this way, TW3 is being enjoyed in exactly the same way.

And nobody has argued against this yet. That fundamentally TW3 can be enjoyed just as a big empty open world explorathon. Heck just compare it with TW2. What is the difference really beyond the size of the world? 3 is pretty much the same thing over a huge scale. I think if TW3 didn't have the huge world, it wouldn't have got the GOTY award. I also think it would have been just as strong of a game, because I don't think the big world adds anything.

Ultimately this is why I don't think it is a great game of the year, because the mass market appeal is not the actual game bits. I wish people did enjoy it for picking the right oils and carefully tracking down their hunt, much the same as I enjoy Bloodborne and much the same way you and the other people complaining enjoy TW3. But I feel the reality is people just want to walk off and look at stuff and this is the majority of gamers today.

Why does it matter what the mass market appeal is? If that's what people enjoy so be it. I try not to dwell on those sort of things because it ends up as just an arbitrary definition of what you think a "real" game should be.

Nothing wrong with appreciating different aspects of a game than others. Personally, I find the base building mechanics in Fallout 4 to be dull and unnecessary padding that distracts users from many of the core issues with the game, but it doesn't really bother me if its someone's GOTY due to that aspect even if I disagree.

I can understand the MGSV stuff. The way you feel about it is similar to the feelings I have for W3.
I am one of the weirdos that are huge Metal Gear Fans but also loved MGSV. I used the open word as a Sandbox and really used all the tools given to me to create some truly fantastic gameplay scenarios. I had so much fun cruising around with D Dog in my Jeep, blaring 80s tunes and wreaking havoc that the pacing issues and weird second act are a distant memory. Player agency and freedom were unparalleled, for me in TPP. I was constantly using different guns and gadgets amd attacking locations in new ways that it never got boring except the side ops towatds the end which are optional anyways. 200 hrs in that game was nothing to me, probably like 200hrs is/would be nothing to you in W3.
I am not saying it would be better or worse as a traditional mgs game but I'm glad they tried something different and MGS 1 through 4 still exist if I want to go back and play that style.

Love Bayonetta, too. It is probably my favorite character action game, even though I still have to finish it. I was going for platinum trophy but once I unlocked the Panther form, if really screwed up the way I was used to dodging and madesome of the challenges really tough. Too many games to play and to finish. My brother in law has a wiiU so I am buying him Bayo 2 for Christmas :) can't wait to play it.

I have almost finished Divinity now with a friend playing online coop. I am pretty upset that it doesn't count progress or trophies for my own game.

More important than the two of us coming to understand each other's opinion is the fact that you reminded and Inspired me to go finish and enjoy the great Bayonetta

Enjoy! Playing Bayonetta is pure bliss.

I'm only 15 hours into Witcher 3 but it's easily one of the greatest RPG's I've ever played.

What CDPR achieved is truly mind blowing and has set an industry standard.

Great for them winning GOTY.

Bloodborne should have at least won best RPG. Seriously does critics give a shit about gameplay today?

It shouldn't have been in the RPG category, should have been in Action and won that.

Super glad that CDPR got the best developer award. Maybe, just maybe, it will get some people to rethink their crappy business practices.

Who am I kidding ;_;

EDIT: TW3 was robbed in the Best OST category.

Well deserved, few games have the same attention to detail and consistency as The Witcher 3, the fact that they have released a massive expansion pack for it and plan to add another one is just icing on the cake.

Still only just got to Ard Skellig despite owning the game since launch day and being 68 hours in (!), but heartily agree. One of the best games I've ever played, wish I could afford to spend time with it more often.

Reading the books now, finished the first and now working my way through Sword of Destiny. As someone who hasn't played W1/W2, they're simultaneously making W3 far more understandable whilst also making me want to go back and play the other games.

I bought this tonight while reading the awards thread. I'm new to the series but looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about.

I stopped playing this on ps4 because of annoying framerates in the city and a lot of other areas when I played it on release.

I'm quite sensitive to performance issues so I'm wondering have these been resolved? Should I start again on ps4 or shall I wait till I have a good PC and play in 60fps with all the bells and whistles.

I've had The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne as my #1 & #2 all year, pretty much. Truly phenomenal game. Well deserved and congrats to CDPR!

Not a PS4 player but from what I've read vast majority of performance issues on PS4 have been fixed with the last patch.

Totally deserved. Its probably the best rpg that ive ever played. Unmatched worldbuilding, quest design and narrative, better gameplay than most other rpgs and a visual masterpiece.

Checking the youtube, did we ever get the Zelda remix? I dont remember hearing it

About as much as they have always done. Lets not forget that DA3 won last year and that Bethesda rpgs have won GOTY in years past, and all of them are markedly worse when it comes to combat.

RPG is a truly meaningless term in video games these days, unless you're referring to rocket-propelled grenades. Everything is an RPG now.

Bloodborne probably fits far better in the Action/Adventure category.

Well if you're serious always go with PC.

Bloodborne for me but TW3 surely deserved this too.

unlike Skyrim won the GOTY awards before it release beating Dark Souls.

Deserved. Likely my favourite game of all time, ahead of UT99.

Nothing beats the witty relationship between Geralt and Yennefer. I can't remember a game that made me smile as much as the Witcher 3 did.

Could not agree more, I cant believe how consistently superb the storytelling was throughout the game even in what can often appear to be the most menial of quests there was always twists and turns.
Also the characters are amazing, everyone of the main cast feel fully fleshed out and real

I really hope CDPR ports Witcher 1 to next gen consoles. I own it on PC, but only have a pretty bad laptop, and dont really care to get a desktop ever again to play stuff like this, so yeah. Dont feel like I can play this one without knowledge of the first two.

While I understand the sentiment...you should really just play it. Because while first two are amazing, the third game is actually more of a sequel to the books than to previous games. So by your logic you would have to read the books first (and you shoud, they are great).
But this is such a time investment that I would recommend you to play TW3, get into it, finish it, and by then you will actually want to read the books, and then replay TW3 :)

I do not think they will ever port Witcher 1 anywhere, they already tried and almost went bankrupt because of it.

Man, this is bloody amazing. Its almost hard to believe that CD Projekt RED were once a niche developer on Poland who made their first stride on 2007 and now they are growing big and strong.

Not only did they give us the Witcher series, but thanks to them, we got the novels released on the English world (Which are amazing, mind you)

Big congrats to CD Projekt RED and long may they prosper. Onward to Blood and Wine and Cyberpunk 2077 :)

It'll be GAF's game of the year too!

I'm jealous of the fuckers that are playing this for the first time -- it's such a solid, well-crafted piece of software.

True. With more and more games borrowing RPG conventions like levels and abilities, the RPG label is slapped on everything. CoD has levels, XP and character builds. RPG!
