Witcher 3 Wins GOTY @ The Game Awards 2015!

RPG is a truly meaningless term in video games these days, unless you're referring to rocket-propelled grenades. Everything is an RPG now.

Bloodborne probably fits far better in the Action/Adventure category.

Bloodborne has a lot of RPG mechanics that are very integral to the game. It fits into Action/Adventure category for sure but so does Witcher 3 and many other RPGs.

My biggest issue is I don't really think the combat is fun. However I'm getting an alpha in a week or so and I intend to finish my play through. I want to make the combat more interesting though and my current build is very melee focused with quen spell in the mix.

I might find this all a tad more fun if I limit the sword play and try and bit of magic and alchamy out. Has that helped anyone here who found the melee a bit dull?

Maybe up igni and bombs or something? While keeping the dodge invincibility and maybe a couple of point in fast attack. I dunno. Any tips would be welcome.

I'm hoping I can make a build that makes combat fun so I am tempted to get the DLC and do more side quests or try NG+

What difficulty do you play on?

Haha

I sent the W3 back to Boomerang rentals after 2 days because it wasn't for me, Combat was just clunky and annoying, And the map just seemed filled with icons to go too.

Each to there own i guess.

I would have given it to bloodborne but I can see how witcher would win this... these awards arent exactly a symposium of industry intellectuals. Not that witcher 3 isn't worthy of praise.

For one thing, it is one of the least 'icons on a map'-ey open world game out there. There are icons, but A) most of them are meaningful (great places with great stories and characters and situations), B) they're all in unique, exciting places to explore, C) you can skip them very easily).

But more importantly, how long did you play for? And did you play the previous games? They dropped the ball badly with the opening couple of hours:

1. The combat is least balanced in the first few hours, so it feels clunkiest. As the hours roll by you get better and better gear and abilities which balance it out quickly and it starts getting more fun.

2. If you haven't played the previous games, I think they messed up introducing new players to the series. The opening hour is mainly junk about characters you won't care about.

Push through those aspects though? To hour 5-6-7? You will start having a great time. Then you'll have 100+ hours to go of sheer wonder.

This thread is evidence of what I'm saying here. (Aside from personal study of the game of course.)

Well-deserved. And glad to see that the Bethesda bullshit doesn't seem to fly anymore.

Damn straight man. I appreciate Bethesda greatly but I think they've been playing the game wrong since Morrowind.

So The Witcher 3 isn't "intellectual"? Whatever that means?

The Bloodborne high horse is riding strong ITT.

Excellent pick for one of the best games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Sure, it had plenty of flaws, most of them minor but a few annoying ones. But as an overall package it was, in my opinion as well, the best game of the year.

Geralt's theme is god-tier music, bringing everything the franchise is together into one song. Incredible stuff.

If I'm honest I don't really remember much about the music from MGSV other than the licensed tracks(which I ended up using original music like Dragon Sound's Friends anyways). Sins of the Father and Nuclear were pretty great though. Alternatively, I loved Ori's soundtrack and fucking adored Witcher 3's Ambient Music and pretty much every other track as well. I put that soundtrack on as background music all the time at work.

The music is great. Geralt's Theme, Kaer Morhen, After the Storm... all so good.

I also love Ori's music a lot.

Admittedly, I still don't know what the Game Awards are. How are winners decided? Are they voted on by a pool of games journalists or something?

At any rate, good for them. Witcher 3 wasn't my cup of tea but it was clearly a well-made game. (played on PC) I'm sure it's pure fan service for those that are into its universe.

Well-deserved. And glad to see that the Bethesda bullshit doesn't seem to fly anymore.

Don't know what "bullshit" that is, but I hope they keep doing it. I put 30 hours into Witcher 3 before quitting out of boredom. I currently have 32 hours logged into Fallout 4, have about a quarter of the map explored, only did a handful of quests, (with a bunch sitting in my queue) and am still playing with enthusiasm. The game is fun and, frankly, I find the world far more interesting to explore than in W3. Heck, I even find the writing more interesting so far. (but again, I can't claim to be a fan of W3's source material) And the combat is surprisingly improved in F4 compared to F3 whereas every encounter was a slog in W3.

EDIT: Easy pick for my GOTY is Bloodborne. Next year will likely be difficult, though. (Street Fighter V, Dark Souls III, and Deus Ex Mankind Divided are the likely candidates as of now)

I agree using the word intellectuals is a bit odd because there isn't anything more intellectual about bloodborne. If anything w3 is prob more intellectual because of how story focused it is. However I don't like the bloodborne high horse comment either as that's the first high horse comment I have seen.

I also feel bloodborne was the best game this year and its pretty much my fav game ever now. But I get why this won. Both games target very different audiences and bloodborne is definitely more niche.

I would have giving BB best game and w3 best RPG because it is a lot more RPG than BB is. I think action / adventure is a bit to broad a category but I guess BB would fit that more. Mechanics wise MGSV could take best shooter for me.

In an era where it seems like every major game or series is trying to cut corners in some way in terms of content or quality, Witcher 3 should be acknowledged purely for not skimping on anything.

It's also happens to be a fantastic story-driven RPG with tactical real-time combat that I enjoyed a lot.

It's my GOTY for sure.

I'm about 12 hours into the TW3 and the world they created for it is mind blowing. The amount of lore and exposition is a joy to play through. It really makes FO4 look bad. It runs incredibly well.

I'm around 6 hours in but I think I agree; most fun / best open world RPG I played in over 5 years. I'm not counting Bloodbourne of the Souls games; they suit a different need.

Very surprised MGSV won for best score of all things. Were they counting the 80s hits? As there was very little scoring overall, let alone during actual gameplay.

i think i'm gonna buy the W3 Season Pass on PS4 - has it ever been on sale? i don't mind plunkin down $25

Thanks for the response.

'High horse' was a bit unfair, but there are quite a few 'what about Bloodborne' comments, some of which are unfair. Eg here, here, here and here.

Most of those posts are reasonable opinions. Preferring Bloodborne to The Witcher 3 isn't bad, nor is wanting your favorite game to win. I think TGA could have used some more categories tbh.

Yeah, only a couple of them validated their opinions (none in-depth) but the only really unfair post was this one.

I certainly don't think preferring any game to win is bad. I 100% empathise with people who prefer Bloodborne. I just take a bit of issue with people who reduce The Witcher 3's thousand gallons of gameplay and content into the handling of one gallon
weird metaphor
. From my personal perspective TW3 has more strings to its bow and more heart than BB, more immersion, so it wins out.

You're absolutely right that they are seriously lacking in categories.

Good for CD Projekt Red for getting the kudos they deserve. TW3 has ruined me for other RPGs this year. Nothing else matches it in my opinion.

Nice pick. Best game this year. Best game this gen perhaps (that or Smash). It's insane to think that there is another possibly 20+ hour expansion coming. This game clicked perfectly with me. It manages to balance combat, exploration, and story so well. I've played it for an absurd amount of hours, but I never once felt bored.

Well deserved. It was between Bloodborne and Witcher 3 for me, but even with the phenomenal Old Hunters DLC, Wild Hunt edges it out by a bit.

The best wRPG since Baldur's Gate 2.

Most critics don't have the patience for it, even if its their job. Only explanation

Or, you know, they liked Wild Hunt more.
