Batman v Superman - New Clip

I think the way they're framing Batman works for a dude who's just been beaten, but I'm 50/50 on whether that's actually what they're going for. Works better without being edited like that TV spot at least.

On the other hand, Cavill is TERRIBLE at being threatening.
 
I will say that as a dedicated DC fan and a diehard defender of Man of Steel, I've actually been OK on all the recent trailers and TV spots, but these current "do you bleed" ones ARE kind of bringing my hype down a bit. Both the long and short versions of this scene just ain't doing it for me. I feel like they'll work better within the context of the film but at the moment it feels like they're cramming this line of dialogue and everything surrounding it down out throats, just because the audience responded positively to it in the first teaser. And for those who are already skeptical of this film, seeing Bats and Supes glare at each other while saying things like "The Bat is dead" and "Consider this mercy" just...isn't gonna change any minds.

Sigh. I still think it'll be pretty good in the end, but this movie has had the most up and down, bipolar marketing I've seen in a film for a long time.

Really hope Cavill's line sounds less stiff in the final product.

His line literally contains the word "mercy" and this plainly isn't a fight. So expecting more antagonism at this point out of Supes seems less reasonable than assuming reluctance, which is consistent with MOS.

I think people are imputing their expectations from Injustice / Knightmare Supes when it doesn't match the context of this clearly early meeting between the two.

This all presumes that the movie is going to produce a logical and consistent story, which is no guarantee. This isn't a jab at snyder either, because you can say that about many films, even ones from established to be good creators.

I feel no reason to give creators the benefit of the doubt. I'm not going to do the opposite either, and I'm going to with hold actual judgement until I see the movie, but I don't see the sense in trusting the writers to give us a coherent by default, especially when they often don't.

Bruce sitting in the batcave pondering Superman's secrets and weaknesses isn't the most exciting thing to put in trailers though. Its also something like that which would probably be giving away too much plot compared to the out of context scenes they've shown so far.

Yeah, but that's ice-skating uphill. Superman literally says "mercy", doesn't lay a hand on Bats, and retreats. It's a really weird read to say he was supposed to all-in on threatening Bats. At that point, you're not just fighting the lines or delivery, but also the facts of the situation on their face... that's starting to become a tortured interpretation and ice-skating uphill.

On face value it's a weak threat, but it's meant to be. Contrast that against Batman beaten down in the rain. There, Superman's voice is raised, they've already fought, and he talks about taking Batman's life not just his cowl, and there's immediacy ("Stay down [now]!" versus "Don't go to it [sometime in the distant future].") and intensity to it... but even there he's declaring his reluctance to fight in that clearly more heightened situation... so it makes sense in a more sedate one Supes isn't good a delivering threats.
 
The "Tell me" sounds cool, the "Do you bleed?" sounds aight, the "you will" sounds dumb. Cavill's delivery actually wasn't that bad, but maybe its because my expectations were so low from reading this thread.

Also, if I were Bats I'd be pissed as hell that some alien dude who wrecked Metropolis was telling me that I could't be Batman anymore cuz he says so. Not after the shit that this Batman has probly seen and done.
 
I don't see how Cavill fudged the line. With the face he's making, I get the impression that it's something he doesn't want to say so it comes out kind of dry. He's trying to be stern but that's not really Clark's character.

Good line too. That is something Superman would say.

I don't know what to think about Batfleck right now. He sounds insane for threatening the being that just wrecked his Batmobile with a nudge, lol. Just how gone is this Bruce?

Can't wait to see it.
 
Oh, and Dave's understanding of Cavill's acting within acting so to speak is something that crossed my mind as well. But I wasn't gonna go there because I couldn't begin to explain it as well as he has.

Right or wrong, it makes sense. Good stuff.
 
As someone who has been quietly (cautiously) optimistic about this movie, this does nothing but engender nervousness and a bit of frustration at Zack Snyder's roll in the DCEU. That delivery was terrible, and had clearly been dubbed. I'm hoping that this simply a result of some last minute editing to somehow make it suitable for TV or something -- that is I hope that this terrible dubbing isn't in the film itself. My god, if WB/DC manages to fuck up the first movie staring both of their premiere superheroes, something you would think would almost write itself, I just don't know what to think about their future projects. I'm a DC stan, so I certainly don't wish for this movie to be bad, but choosing to share a clip such a stilted performance just comes across as kind of tone deaf. Surely this isn't the take they decided to go with.

You may be right, but you have to realize you are currently writing the story for the writers. It might be the same story the writers have written, but there's no reason to assume the writing makes sense when it very well might not. It could be just what it looks like. Two goons posturing at one another with bad line delivery.

I don't see how Cavill needs to be threatening considering what he can do and what he just did in that scene. I actually like that he's so matter-of-fact about it.

Damn good post - summed up my feelings 100%. I feel your pain and am crossing my fingers. I really *want* DC to succeed - but sometimes they really don't make it easy to have confidence in them.
 
If this is any indication of the performance that Zack Snyder is getting out of his actors, I can't wait to see Gal Gadot delivering exposition. It's gonna be glorious.

Oh I get that. With the boyscout stuff, I'm mainly speaking about the possibility that exist further down the road when they eventually team up. One of the reasons why I'm so down for this movie is because I want to see those different ideologies come to a clash. It's one of the reasons why the Justice League animated series clicked so much with me.

Batman vs Superman is based on the Dark Knight returns Novel, DKR Bruce is worn out and beaten man, they are trying to incorporate aspects of the novel while spinning a new twist, from the fall out of Man of Steel, IMO they should have just done the Novel...
 
Cavil is killing it as superman. I don't know how anyone can look at that scene and say Batfleck is fairing better. Cavil took that scene.
That was such a bad scene to showcase though. Why not show a scene with Batman in his armor suit? That's a pretty bad scene to be showing around Snyder.
 
I still think the Arkham games pull Batman off the best, both suit-wise and voice-wise. This voice seems a little off, although it's still MILES better than Bale's ridiculous growl. And the suit does make him look a little bloated to be honest. I don't think the scene was as bad as some people here are saying though. Still cautiously optimistic about the movie.

Conroy is terrible in those games. He just sounds like he's phoning it in, with zero nuance.

Dude had, at most, five good scenes in all three games.

You mean Arkham Origins. Rocksteady's Arkham games just has silly lines and flat delivery Batman in it.

I'm actually on board with him being totally apathetic. He's not showing Superman that he has the edge emotionally by reacting in anger or fear. He's showing defiance with his nonchalant-ness. So, it comes across as lazy if viewed by itself, but if that's what they're going for it makes perfect sense (I have no idea if that's the case or not but that was my initial impressions)

I liked it too. Sounded authoritative along with a tinge of disgust. His gaze lingers as he turns his head, he doesn't even respond to Batman's lines because his face sells the reaction.
