FINAL FANTASY XV - Niflheim Base Battle Footage

it looks amazing but something is off.
is it the blacks? something about the colours is really tiring to my eyes.

This is something that I feel could be contributing to the 'not-FF-like' sentiment felt by some posters. The color spectrum we see in the footage is largely black, blue, and orange. In FF, we usually see the full color spectrum or some vivid combination of colors and detail, but here we see much less detailing, as it's been obfuscated by the blacks and the blue/orange lighting.

The render shot of Aranea made me realize how I actually like her costume a lot.
I saw her many times in 2011 versus trailer but during that trailer I didn't really appreciate/care about her as much. But now I see it some of parts of armor designs are really nice. Also it seems like she is voiced by Sawashiro Miyuki which is awesome.

Really excited to see her in the game.

Yeah, I've been waiting for her to appear since... I don't even remember the year of her trailer, lol.

Looks nice and all but ironically the only thing that seems "final-fantasy-esque" to me in this trailer is Aranea. Guess I'm part of their "target demographic" or whatever since I rather like what I've seen of her design... To be fair Kain is my fav FF character ever so I think I'm biased towards Dragooners anyway.

They've barely shown their "fantasy" stuff yet. Wait for Tenebrae reveal.

Gladio waltzes into battle with his whole damn chest exposed. Only protected by a shirt/jacket.

I don't think it matters.

I think people overthink things too damn much. Not every design or costume needs to be taken in a real world context. Generally despite what they say most designers make shit the way they are because they think it looks cool. This is Nomura...King of beltz and zipperz and other random shit,...because he thinks it looks cool. Realistically , Noctis and bros even if magic powers and shit was real would probably die unless they dodge every single attack throughout their adventures.

stop placing real world values on things.

That is THE worst criticism around these parts man....unless the game prides itself on being 100% lifelike...I think some liberties should be allowed.

Lighten up and stop taking everything so serious, Internet.

I'm not saying they need to be completely realistic or anything. Stylistic choice always matter in character design and most video game characters don't wear practical outfit for their situation. I get that. I understand and respect their decisions for their design. What I don't appreciate is including unnecessary fan-service in exchange of something that would make the character look more respectable and yet still retain the attractive look. Aranea looks like she has a pretty face, nice fit body, she can rock the dragoon armor without exposing her tits and still look stunning, yet in a more adult and practical way.

Same goes to Gladio. He's huge, muscular, and overall aesthetics, but those abs don't need to be shown to the world 24/7. That's overkill.

Not pointing out anything towards her. Just saying that if you're not in a game's selling demography, then the game is not for you.

She never said she doesn't like the game. She was just expressing her own opinion on Aranea's armor. It's amazing how far people have gone to misconstrue and warp that into some evil monster they feel they have to defeat.

Hope they don't do a Captain Phasma with her by only appearing for 5 seconds.

I mean you do seem to have a problem with exposed skin, yes?
You did say it would be better to cover up her cleavage window and thigh.

Saying that covering those up would focus attention more on her actual character rather than her bits = having a problem with exposed skin? No, no it doesn't. Don't make that assumption.

And I'm still not pointing her out. I'm generalising.

Ahhh, this looks good. Loving all the buddy attacks. The buddy attacks, and them talking to you during gameplay really feels you're on a journey with three of your friends. The gameplay looks very Kingdom Heartsy, which I don't mind. As long as I can dodge, counter, and have some baddass looking attacks it's going to be a battle system I won't get bored of.

Still worried about PS4 performance, but I'm already expecting 30 fps with dips during big battles, I surely hope it won't be worse then that.

The footage is really dark though. Like crushed blacks dark. Maybe it's just me.

This, Persona 5 and Star Ocean V all in 2016. Oh my god. Year of the forever. I need Star Ocean 3/FFXII on PS4 to tide me over Sony.

Looks great other than the tweaked combat which I still have my doubts about. They need to show an in-depth look about it.

if you are going to be able to get over the fact that Noctis this tiny man child is able to take on 80 robots and warp around. Dudes with out shirts and Fancy but useless armor should be able to slide too.

You're forgetting Trails of Cold Steel II. And Setsuna. And Dark Souls III. And Valkyria: Azure Revolution. And Nier 2 (though I expect this to slip to 2017). And Fire Emblem Fates. And that not-SMTxFE-anymore. And Digimon Story. And World of Final Fantasy. And Bravely Second. And Summon Night 6. And Tales of Berseria. And some smaller releases + ports/remasters like DQVII & VIII 3DS, KH2.8 etc.

Pretty much one of the best years ever for JRPGs.

Again, it doesn't need to be completely practical, but at least it could not be objectifying.

And Noctis' magic protects him and his friends, and gives him those crazy abilities, so that's something that is pretty easy to roll with.

so magic can explain away one but not the other?

but like I said before not getting into that topic for the 1000th time..it goes nowhere and it is tiring.

Looks like Metal Gear with a little bit of Kingdom Hearts. I guess it's Final Fantasy since the word Magitek appeared for a second.

I'm gonna get it and probably enjoy it totally fine but I dunno, nothing about it looks like Final Fantasy to me outside of random token tidbits so far. If it's good then great but someday I'd like to see a new normal Final Fantasy game with the thought and care that went into something like Heavensward's campaign and how it approached mythology again. Felt genuine.

Looks... pretty fucking great. This actually has me excited.

After recent RPG titles, and including this, I'm actually confused what makes a game an "RPG" instead of just an action game. Is the inclusion of character, equipment, etc, management the only notable difference between them?

This is a legimate question I've been wondering about. Like back in the day when I played Kingdom Hearts, and even now playing the Witcher 3 I guess I don't really feel what an RPG is outside of turn-based combat which is now pretty much gone.

Oh I know. But those three are my main must haves. Well, along with DQ7/8 3DS. Tales, Setsuna, Valkyria and Nier 2 are also on my list, but a tad below the main three. Not sure about Fates and SMT x FE yet.

I just hate how everything seems to release at the end of 2016/beginning of 2017. Wish it was more spread over the year.

Hope this is a confirmation of free swimming.

I love when bodies of water in games actually have waves.
The fact that we still see large bodies of water that are completely flat in this day and age drives me nuts.

I wonder if this means there are swimming in the game now. Or is it just for cutscene.

*summons leviathan, entire world floods*

I know now...........I know why.........the tales are told.....................

Could be it yes :). While the graphics are stunning...this is a problem for me.

But I am a sucker for FF. So I'll still buy it.

Dudes with out shirts and Fancy but useless armor should be able to slide too.

This is a rather complex and multi-faceted issue in not just gaming but in our general culture, but to give it a few words, Aranea's design could well be alienating to some players. We look for people to relate to in a story after all, could be the protagonists or the antagonists in varying degrees. As dudes we have plenty of representation and options to relate to. Our sister counterparts don't have as many, and much of the representation they have is designed in a way they wouldn't really be able to relate to. Often times, they're forced to look past the design of the character to get to the actual character. We never have to do this as men because we have plenty of options and always have, in the videogame realm - specifically, male character designs never make us as men feel uncomfortable. I can accept Aranea's design at face value because she isn't someone who I would potentially look for a relation to as a representative of my sex. I like boobs and thighs, sure, she's appealing visually. But I'm not a woman, I don't have to look at her and know that her and Cidney are going to be the norm of representation my sex gets in this game I'm otherwise super hyped about playing. And perhaps they are the outliers and not the norm, but expressing criticism over the armor design is absolutely, perfectly valid and, this is critical, is not damning the game itself. For that matter, I think Gladio's exposed abs is extremely tacky and the party's dress in general is lol-worthy, except Ignis who remains a man of class. And that right there encapsulates why I can accept sexy bikini armor and exposed abs and what not, because there's options for me to choose to relate with. Visual design has a lot of power.

Or to put all that into even fewer words, I wouldn't be able to relate to Noctis very well if he was dressed in a metal leotard and thigh-highs.

so magic can explain away one but not the other?

but like I said before not getting into that topic for the 1000th time..it goes nowhere and it is tiring.

I very much agree on the tiring no-sides-win discussion, so I'll leave it after this: the difference for me is that Noctis/Gladio/etc have practical designs in unpractical situations, whereas Cindy/Aranea have impractical + extremely sexualised designs in the same unpractical situations. Fighting with an open shirt isn't really at the same objectification tier as being a mechanic in a bikini/high-heeled boots, or being a warrior with extremely sexualised armour. In comparison to Aranea, Nilfheim's General Glauca is so covered with armour it's like he's a walking metal mountain. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of his design, actually, he's quite creepy!

Or to put all that into even fewer words, I wouldn't be able to relate to Noctis very well if he was dressed in a metal leotard and thigh-highs.

The DLC we deserve.

so magic can explain away one but not the other?
Of course magic can explain why the dragoon doesn't need chest protection, but that doesn't make it any less objectifying. Even if magic protected her, that doesn't mean she should be naked or anything.

Noctis & co dressing somewhat casually isn't a problem because, really, no level of armor, be that leather or heavier metallic one, can protect against a giant hitting you with his giant fists or being set in flames. It makes sense that it's magic that can protect Noctis & co against the worst blow of such attacks. I mean, that was said to be the reason why Noctis dying would be game over even when the game was still Versus XIII & was intended to have multiple playable characters. When Noctis dies, his friends lose his protective magic & are totally vulnerable to everything. FFXV is also a pretty modern world so it would look kinda wrong if Noctis & co armed themselves like they were going to war. It's more like The Matrix (except with magic protection) than Lord of the Rings. Neo & co aren't wearing armor because it doesn't make sense in a modern New York.

That's an issue with a decent in-universe explanation. Protective magic doesn't explain away why female characters don't have at least somewhat practical/sensible outfits (like a mechanic looking more like a streetwalker or a dragoon knight with a protective suit of armor having such revealing design). As I said earlier in this thread, fantastical, practical & good-looking/sexy aren't things that exclude each other.

Have been on a complete blackout on the game for ages but had to watch this video. That female dragoon looks fucking awesome.

How's the button configuration now? The one seen in the latest footage is based on Japanese version, so NA/EU might be a little different. I'm guessing:

X - Attack
Square - Guard
Triangle - Weapon ability (based on the currently selected weapon)
Circle - Jump

L1 - Warp
L2 - Toggle between weapon selection and party member commands
R1 - Magic (Like Kingdom Hearts, R1+face buttons as shortcuts, so 4 active magic)
R2 - Summon

L1+R1 - Armiger

Directional up, down, left, right to select between weapon selection or party member commands.

It's so weird seeing a turret sequence in a main FF game.

FF8 had a turret sequence (cutscene that is) and the demos that had FF8 usually ended with the turret sequence.

As for the Dragoon Lady.

It's no different than A Realm Reborn (which gets praised often) where all female armors seemingly have cleavage or their entire midriff or something revealed all of a sudden compared to male armors of the same type. Dragoon armor in FF14 ARR is revealing for females compared to males.

FF11 in comparison mostly have parity between male and female armor with exceptions that make sense (like Dancer Empyrean Armor which has a vast difference but that's because it actually fits the theme).

Now, I'm not saying I don't like it but if people are criticizing the FF15 Dragoon Lady, they should also criticize the armor designs in ARR. Half of the female armors in ARR have a lot of exposed areas compared to the male characters of the same type.

Anyway, as for FF15 - FF games have always been attempts at being unique.

I have been more of a PC player but the FF games have not aged well.

Let's take StarCraft: Brood War (for example). SC1 is one of my favorite games of all time. Even after playing SC2, I sometimes go play SC1 and in terms of pure gameplay, the game is just fluid and fast paced and there's a lot of neat stuff you can do with units in SC1 compared to SC2. A comparison is probably Super Smash Bros: Melee compared to the sequels.

That's one game where I can just go back and play the game just for the gameplay alone and still have a fun time.

FF games are more just for the unique experience for the first time.

FF1-6 is not really comparable to a table top RPG. The same for FF7-10.

Final Fantasy has (and still is) always been a more "cinematic" or "immersive" type series. Each game attempts to bring out the best in graphics, music, and world for people to immerse themselves in.

In terms of the actual gameplay, FF games have mostly been "Press A to win" type games. Not much difficulty or depth in the combat compared to traditional RPGs or PC games.

Not only that but the main quest is usually linear. Sure there's hidden stuff to find but unlike a table top RPG, you don't need to exploit every rule just to survive in an FF game.

Now, the only reason I am mentioning this is that in most FF threads, I always see a lot of negativity. I have never been really impressed with any FF game "except" FF11 Seekers of Adoulin (and that's because it's one of the few Japanese games or few games in general to really stand out and offer a lot of depth and unique experiences with its content).

FF14 ARR is more or less a traditional action bar GCD MMO just with FF themes and mini games. FF games (except 11 and I'd argue the original version of FF14) have been more or less traditional games. The main selling points of FF games have always been more about presentation.

Is there really anything in FF games that does something that amazing or unique compared to low budget games? FF1 was an attempt to replicate table top RPG for consoles, and its a decent simulation but FF1 (and none of the FF games) aren't very close to a traditional table top RPG.

In terms of actual RPG elements, combat, etc, the FF series have always been just decent at best. However, the FF games are still great at presentation.

It's still the same here and Square seems to be doing a decent job.

I'm happy with Square because they gave me Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin which is one of the most unique and interesting experiences I had in any game.

Anything else is a bonus.

I hope we can customize the button configuration, since it's an ARPG and requires some measure of dexterity I will want to have the most comfortable configuration possible.

I love how particle effects look now

I remember hating them back when/before Duscae was released, but now they implemented them well.

jULK0ha.gif

particle looks so good now.

I remember they said we could customize the button configuration months ago

That looks very cool, particularly the fight with the magitek armour, which looked much more compelling than the fight with the Behemoth was in Duscae.

Is this PC footage? Kind of annoying if so, considering a PC release will likely come quite a long time after. Releasing this year? Concentrate on console footage and show something credible, this is a target render otherwise...

Tabata confirmed Attack, Guard, Jump, and Warp are each mapped to a face button now. Going by the UI, the face button layout seems to be the following:

Circle - Attack
Square - Guard
Triangle - Warp
X - Jump

I'm less certain about Warp and Jump, but there were prompts in the footage saying to hold Triangle to Warp which would leave X for Jump.

Elemental Magic also takes up a weapon slot on the D-Pad when equipped.
