PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

I think its a puzzle game, sorta like...pre-Lumines maybe? Havent played it either.

ah i see, it's a puzzle game...

well, i'm about to start chapter 2 in Shadow of Destiny tonight. really excited for ps2 gaming right now. i tried r-type final yesterday and realized it's going to be a task to unlock 100 ships so that can wait a bit. the one part i never looked at was the AI vs. battle game. this time around i'm going to give that mode a shot as well.

Opened up a brand new, sealed, official (et cetera) Dual Shock 2 controller yesterday that I had bought off ebay a couple weeks ago. Box looks completely immaculate aside from some fading on the yellow cardboard, I can't fathom how there could be any possible damage. Plug it into my PSone and the d-pad is stuck / forces a down-and-slightly-to-the-left scroll no matter what I do or what i press. Plug it into my PS2 and it isn't recognized at all. Has anyone heard of this happening before or have any advice? Could i have possibly shorted something out? Do DS2 controllers not work well with PSone?? I also have an older, cruddy DS2 that works fine, but seems to have some input lag. I'm not sure if I'm just used to 360/PS3, but i'm currently playing Xenogears on PSP and it feels pretty snappy. Thinking about opening both controllers and combining the parts. Really regret selling all my original PS2 stuff a couple gens ago.

What are the best arcade sticks for the PS2?

PS2 version of Tomb Raider Legend at 480p + Widescreen looks pretty damn good. A few framerate drops but otherwise you can really tell late PS2 games from early PS2 games (unless the game in question is Metal Gear Solid 2 which still looked good throughout the entire PS2 lifespan >_>)

Still powering through Persona 3 FES. Save file is at 71 hours.

Just picked up a Japanese PS2! Has a "PC Card" port which is missing from my NA model. Anything fun I can do with that, beyond hooking up the standard expansions?

I'm still in the hype phase so it will take some time before I can look back onto it more objectively but:

damn, Persona 3 has the best final boss I have ever fought. Didn't look up any guides and I don't think I was over levelled (entire party between 70-72)

That was intense as hell. Lots of tactics switching. Took lots of endurance too. All 3 of my attempts lasted over an hour. I have fought bosses with multiple forms before but this guy takes the cake at 13 forms lmao

Kinda want to do mainline now. But then I never did beat dds2.

Never played that one. Picked up a few games myself!

nice! they look so clean in those packages.

i still have my ps2 copy of persona 4 un-opened... i got golden for psvita but haven't got very far... i'm really interested in getting into the series one day.

So davidwhangchoi, I will have my 1CC run of Art of Fighting 2 uploaded next week.
i'm definitely going to watch your vid. i've been linking no death runs for a few arcade games in another forum i frequent. (i like watching those vids every now and then) i'm going to share yours there once it's up =)

I kind of want to play that... <_<

It's not very good, in my opinion. You can check for yourself, though, since it shouldn't be too expensive, but From has always made tons of clunky games -- sometimes that works in spite of that or even because of that, others like Eternal Ring's case, I'd say it doesn't period.

Hah, fair enough. Hell I remember seeing this game in bargain bins all the time and never bothering back in the day, after all.
So what doesn't work about it? Bad controls?

Doing time trials in Tomb Raider Legend is pretty fun. Its like an early Mirror's Edge (mediocre combat included)

I enjoyed Eternal Ring when I played it a couple years ago. I liked the emphasis on magic with the rings. If you like the King's Field type games you should give it a try. The game costs like $1 anyway. King's Field: The Ancient City and especially Shadow Tower Abyss are the best at that type of gameplay on PS2. Hopefully the translation for Hungry Ghosts finishes soon, been wanting to give that on a shot. As much as I love the Souls games, I wish they would revisit King's Field.

You will? Awesome. Here's something to note about this playthrough:

I perfected 2 characters in it, which I didn't expect to happen at all
Both Yuri and King's shirts are ripped off, lol
I almost perfect Geese in the 1st round, and shockingly didn't lose to him in the 2nd round

I got a slim silver PS2 today! It came with some extras I won't ever probably use, the eyetoy, silver remote, etc. I did score the matching silver component cables and optical cable.

Out of the huge PS2 library, these were the first games I thought of getting.

Everything about it just is sort of half assed or really clunky. You'll get motion sickness from the FOV, you'll see monsters with path issues, you'll find that the gem system is unnecessarily obtuse in a game that isn't that hard to begin with...

But on the other hand, it is pretty unique as a PS2 title and its closest comparison game-wise is indeed From's own King's Field series. The story is also rather good, some say it's the highlight.

Find it cheap and try it. You may be able to get through it (it's not too long either) or you may not be able to stomach it at all, but no harm done either way.

You are excused this time because the genesis is awesome.

Don't let it happen again, though.

lol

i have a slim already so didn't want to double up yet =)

i stopped by a retro store today, called Digital Press in Clifton, NJ
here's my haul
most excited is the game in the middle:
it was 7.99. they had a buy 2 get one free on ps2 games so i just picked up FFXII and onimusha 3 for the hell of it.
man, i always wanted to play FM5 so bad but needed a copy of a blk label JYP disc. (since the greatest hit doesn't work w/ the fan translation) thankfully they had a copy of both the greatest hits and black label so i was able to double check the serial numbers on the discs since JYP's greatest hits disc look identical on the actual disc inside. (i wanted to make sure someone didn't sell them a greatest hits disc in the blk level case) they were really cool in letting me open them up.

New copies of FM5 were 500 yen bargain bin fodder a couple years ago in Japan, but it's wild to see a cheap copy in America.

Cool that it can be patched to English. I should do that to my copy and put it on my PS2 Hdd...

i just starting playing FM5 tonight. it really looks great. such an upgrade over FM4 (which i liked btw), in the graphics dept,

this is such an underrated series that never caught on in the west...=( i hope more plp give this a shot

Should I get a Dreamcast to PS2 adapter for it?

Oh and I do have Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution, which is awesome!

That should help - even better if you have a PS2 arcade stick! the game isn't as easy to pick up and play as 2 or even 4, but when you get the swing of it, movement is a joy:
