PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Looking for opinions on the Ghost in the Shell game, I found a good deal for a copy on ebay, but I wanna know what some of you guys think about it.

Also how do you download saves? My main and back up saves for Soul Calibur 2 both got corrupted

Just beat it! Finished it with an A rank - game rules. Definitely one of the best Contra games, but I might like 3 and Hard Corps a little bit more.

Nice dude! Goin for that s-rank? Im gonna play some hardcorps uprising at some point myself. Or strider 3 mode (sayuri)

I'm up to 216 Pal games such a fun system to collect for

Agreed. The right combination of cheap and a shitload of good games. Now is a great time to be a ps2 collector.

Go to Gamefaqs, they have save games there!

just got back from a retro game store and picked up art of fighting anthology ps2, i'm going to give it a go on 240p via sony BVM (but no way can i beat the game w/o a lot of dying)
If it's your 1st time playing it then get ready to be owned by the cpu, lol. I was like that when I started playing it, but then I learned their a.i. and exploited it.

BTW it'll take you a long while if you can ever get to Geese.

Tell me how you like the game though.

Silpheed is a game that I always used to see and think "maybe i should try that out sometime" but never actually bought it.

i seem to remember the first game getting a lot of hype in game mags.

^ that one has some really good translation notes in the manual. The game isn't that great though IMO

I took a direct feed of that over a year ago.

I do not enjoy recording or taking direct feeds of PS2 games without 480p or deinterlacing, lol.

Update: this is what i picked up for 22 quid

Arc: Twilight of the Spirits
Astérix & Obélix XXL 2: Mission: Las Vegum
Call of Duty 3
Demon Stone
Despicable Me
Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King
Final Fantasy X
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
The Mark of Kri
Onimusha 3
Orphen: Scion of Sorcery
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
Ultimate Spider-Man

Assuming all came in nice boxes, that's a nice deal. Can replace some of those junk game boxes if you get a better game in a crummy box.

I'm hoping you PS2 experts can help me out because my gaming night isn't going too well at the moment.

I bought a used copy of Taito Legends Vol. 1 and component cables from Amazon for my PS2. I got a slim a few weeks ago because I finally have the room to start playing my PS1 games again and missed out on the PS2 era the first time around.

I put the Taito disc in and nothing happens. It hardly even sounds like the disc is trying to load. I just get the system screen for the PS2 where you can adjust the system settings.

I've checked with three other games - Tourist Trophy, Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1, and Crazy Taxi - and they all work fine (and look fantastic with the component cables).

So what could be wrong with my Taito disc? It's in the original case with the instruction manual, and the disc doesn't look deeply scratched. I tried cleaning it with some Invisible Glass hoping that might help but still nothing. It's like my PS2 doesn't even try to read it, but every other game I've tested works.

Got any advice? I looked at the disc, and I definitely bought an US-code NTSC U/C one. Not a Japanese or European copy. It all looks quite legit.

Help.

Taito Legends 1 is a blue disc, which might mean your PS2 has stopped reading CDs for whatever reason. It was a common problem on early fat models. Might've happened to your slim as well.

Those others you tested are silver, right? I forget if CCC is on CD or DVD.

Yeah, Taito is a blue disc.

Unfortunately, Crazy Taxi is too, and it runs with no problems and looks great now with the component cables.

didn't realize crazy taxi was blue too.

have you tried holding the disc up to a light with the label facing the light? there might be some small label scratches. otherwise, randomly dead disc, i guess.

Got a slim PS2 that won't read discs - silver, blue or PS1. I'm thinking its a motor issue. I saw a vid on YT about the two buttons that need depressed inside. I'll try that first. Laser and interior don't look dirty to my eyes. Any other suggestions?

Just decided to go back to PS2 after virtually ignoring it at the time, me and my younger brother shared a console for a while, for the first five years I only ever had the following games

time splitters (brother kept and traded)
Tekken tag
dave mirras BMX
Guitar hero/ Rockband games

Then a couple of years ago i bought a few more games second hand

All of the Mortal Kombat games that the ps2 had, 24 the game (never played it only got it cos it was like £2 when i was watching the series)

Yesterday i got

Time splitters (rebought due to good memories)
Punisher
The thing
Resi evil code veronica
Enter The Matrix ( it was 0.75p lol)

I dont like rpgs much

I do like fighting games, racers, games like crash bandicoot (only played psone versions) horror
And the games mentioned above and open world games (just cause 3, red dead redemption, gta v and vice city are my faves)

Sorry I know it doesn't exactly address your issue but depending on your model you can play games on your slim through ethernet cable (with ISOs on your pc hard drive) and circumvent the issue altogether.

Didn't the PAL version run @ higher res? I heard it had some updated visuals because it had more development time.

Edit: BTW, it never occurred to me that I don't have PS2 ICO. I should fix that...

I don't know about these updated visuals specifically, but what could have happened is:
The TV only shows a small portion of the 3D environment
50Hz can show more of that environment because of its increased vertical resolution
The increased resolution is contained within the same display surface / aspect ratio, meaning the objects and the world are still vertically impaired

In Ico the gameplay speed is still locked to the framerate, meaning the game is 20% slower at 50Hz.

So you have a little bit more information on the top and bottom part of the screen at 50Hz, at the expense of a slight vertical crush and a slow ass gameplay. The PAL release has an option to choose between both refresh rates thankfully.

Yeah, Taito is a blue disc.

Unfortunately, Crazy Taxi is too, and it runs with no problems and looks great now with the component cables.

So my situation has gone from bad to worse, and I'd like to know what to do.

I got Capcom Classics Vol. 2 in the mail today, and I can't get past the screen where it asks whether to create save game data. I even tried taking the memory card out. The system just hangs there.

Worse yet, I tried Crazy Taxi, and it's not working either now.

However, Capcom Classics Vol. 1 still loads fine. Is there anything I can do to clean the console that might bring it back. I paid $65 for it with 23 games just three weeks ago, and wanted to add some retro compilations to be collection. I'm not having a good day at work, and this just makes things worse.

Based on this I'd suggest:

Beyond Good and Evil
Silent Hill 2
Burnout 3: Takedown
Klonoa 2
Bully

Hi guys, just getting into collecting for the PS2. It's the only console from the sixth generation I largely missed out on; as a young kid I was lucky enough to have both the original Xbox and Gamecube on their launch, so counted my blessings. Still, there were a few PS2 exclusives I always wanted to have a go of, and now I think I'm ready to.

I'm looking for the more Japan-centric exclusives/JRPGs/other obscure titles you can't experience elsewhere. Any other recommendations to add beyond what I've got down so far:

Monster Rancher
Nightshade
Haunting Grounds
King’s Field IV
Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil
Shadow of Rome
Shadow Hearts trilogy
Radiata Stories
Ring of Red
Shadow Tower Abyss
Suikoden III and V
Tenchu
The Bouncer
Tenchu
Valkyrie Profile 2
Xenosaga trilogy
