Uncharted 4 preview thread. New footage/info

Game of the gen looking beautiful.

I hope this game shares the intense moments that Uncharted 2 offered at some points in game. Like the part where you ran through the Tibetan village, going in and out of buildings and the tank was blowing out walls while you were running through the building...

That shit was brilliant!

Imagine that some kind of scene except with all the particle effects and objects with its own set of physics now in Uncharted 4. I can imagine shit would be flying everywhere and it just look insane.

Nice shitpost. Anyway, nothing i've seen from UC4 has looked more natural than this incredible moment from Quantum Break's later sections. I've already praised UC4 without resorting to hyperbole like "it's levels above everything else" because that's bull imho. Especially with games like SC and Hellblade coming soon.

Really,? That scene?
Completely emotionless facial animation. "Dead" eye shaders. It could be a botox/zoloft commercial.

I've watched 4 of these play throughs now, and realised that every single one approaches the final combat area completely differently. Pretty cool that there's so much scope to how you can approach the segment. Game should have tonnes of replayability.

Sadly chances of a PS4K version are so minimal sicne the game is releasing so soon. I hope at least TLOU2 will get a PS4K version.

"I would rather have people hate it than be indifferent to it. "

AMEN

I forget the exact quote, but it reminds me of when Kamiya said he would rather make a game that a few people love rather than one that everyone is okay with. Could not agree more.

Which are the 4 ones you watched and made you realise approaches were different? I watched just the Digital Spy version.

Might have already been known beforehand but the first I've seen the MGS'esque marking system, so glad to see other games using it, I love the feature.

Looking forward to it. Wasn't expecting such open worldy type levels, bit of a departure from the first three. But it still has the top draw graphics and animation we've come to expect from Naughty Dog.

Release date can't come soon enough.

The Gamersyde videos look so good. Combat looks fun, vehicle traversal looks amazing.
The release feels so far away. O_O

You know I wonder if Uncharted 4 & Quantum Break were both multi-plat would they still be compared?

Seriously..lol I feel like the game is just a graphical showpiece like the The Order. Gameplay looks a tad shallow though and it doesn't seem to be groundbreaking in anyway judging by reviews. UC4 is another step above because it seems to be firing on all cynlinders. This is GOTY stuff here, it's just above graphics and animations. I like the ROTR comparison better, at least they are more similar titles.

Not sure what I'm supposed to see in that scene. The faces are extremely emotionless, with creepily lifeless eyes. The torn frames don't help, either.

Skin looks bland, too. All in all not anywhere near impressive.

I love the winch animations: how to tie it to the tree and when folding after releasing it.

Agreed, although I hate the way it draws back in to the jeep itself. It pulls back in a completely unrealistic way, almost as it it wraps around and through the jeep, before returning to it's original state.

Watching the Gamersyde video now, there's some temporal stuff going on for AA and shadow filtering. You can see in cutscenes, the first frame when it switches to a new camera angle looks a bit rough, then over the next few frames it smoothes out. Aliasing, hair dithering, and shadow dithering all smooth out a bit.

Here's frame 1 after a cut:

And a few frames later:

And when something in the foreground moves over a shadow there's a weird king of ghosting artifact of the shadow that takes place. See the trail left behind as his hand moves over the shadow here:

Motion blur artifacts look better than as seen in earlier builds and the MP betas. There isn't the weird breakup that you could see before, however you can see that the motion blur effect isn't running at full resolution and leads to some pretty aliased edges at times. Shadow and hair dithering is still disappointing (I seriously hate dithering). I think the biggest ugly thing is the shadow treatment. The dithering, the temporal ghosting thing, and the resolution isn't outstanding. It's a situation where the shadows actually end up looking better during gameplay then cutscenes cause you aren't seeing them up close. Other than that, the game visually looks really good.

There's some type of global illumination effect going on as you can see the red from the dirt/rocks casting light up on the characters, but I'm not sure it's a true global illumination system or if it's kind of faked. The end result looks nice though. The LOD draw in/transitions are pretty nice and subtle. If you look close you can see a couple of small bushes pop in occasionally, but it's not often and for the most part there isn't noticeable draw in. Shadow draw distance seems pretty good, especially compared to stuff like Fallout 4 and MGSV. The lighting overall just looks really nice in this location. The contact based character ambient occlusion that they came up with for Last of Us sees a return and looks even better here.

And the gameplay itself looks so damn good.

Just saw the videos on Gamersyde, was so glad to see the footage up there. I agree with their concerns about the behaviour of enemies in the video, those baddies definitely should have spotted Nathan sooner, but let's wait and see in the full game. And also as they said, there was a bit of things that could be destroyed but not a lot. After the E3 demo last year i definitely thought more would be destructible, but that IS a completely different location, but still.

Everything else is awesome though.

These kind of graphics and....zero of that nasty aliasing visible, holy cow man.

Eurogamer's criticisms seem a bit out of place when compared to the other previews which praise how the game feels.

Holy crap. Everything about this footage is amazing. Gameplay looks hugely improved over previous games and I'm now convinced this is one of, if not the best looking game I've seen so far.

Another detail I like is that the clouds seem to cast shadows.

Yeap. There's a point in the Kinda Funny play through towards the end of the video where as the cloud above them sweeps across and away, sunlight comes through and lights up the area surrounding them.

Oh no I hope this is not anotehr FFXV case where you have to pause to get a cleaner IQ. I can clearly see the same hiccups from the FFXV demo in the first frame you posted. Luckily it gets immediatley corrected later in the next frame and it is not noticeable when moving unlike FFXV.

It is called colour bleeding and there were many instances of it in the Madagascar Market i.e when the merchant opens the sunshade and it scattered its green hue dynamically on the scene. This is tied dynamically to the light source and can"t be a fake if the obejcts are dynamic like the umbrella or the rocks scattering the colour on moving objects (unless it is static as part of a static GI textures which don't interact with surrounding moving objects or characters which is not the case here).

The game is a first Party Sony AAA game: they can borrow tech from Guerilla from Horizon which has the best realtilme cloud tech in any game.

Don't know how I feel about this... getting a bit sick of open world being dumped into everything. I didn't find the open world'y segments of the footage to look very entertaining whatsoever. Just completely standard stuff. I come to Uncharted for a rollercoaster linear ride, not rolling around an area finding collectables.
What are you talking about ? Since when is Uncharted 4 "open world" ?

Noice

With Ellie, Naughty Dog had to cheat by making her invisible to enemies: She could sneak around in plain view without getting spotted. But that was a necessary compromise for the stealth-heavy combat in The Last of Us. The alternative would just lead to frustrating deaths that would be out of your control. While you still might see odd moments like that in Uncharted 4, Newman said that the smarter A.I. means it won’t happen as often as it did with Ellie.
