Uncharted 4 preview thread. New footage/info

The point is that the boss fights in Uncharted have always been among the lowest points in the games - and Naughty Dog have basically never mentioned them. The fact that they mention this one at all is a standout thing - the fact that they praise it is a big plus.

Yeah, they know the prior Uncharted boss fights are black marks on the franchise, so for Neil to be this confident (even if it's in a joke) has me excited to see what they have in store.

Every time I see the jeep and winch mechanic I can't help but worry it will be this game's equivalent to TLOU's water and pallet sequences. I trust ND to do a lot of things right, but they've clearly shown questionable judgment about certain things in the past. Please don't make this vehicle/open world/"puzzle" solving stuff so frequent that it turns repeat playthroughs into a chore.
Loading most likely takes place during these segments. Better than a black screen.

I doubt it will be. I think they only take a while if you go off the beaten path and do all the optional exploring. You can probably critical path it fairly quickly. I imagine it's like the campus section of the Last of Us when you're on the horse. It takes a while if you go through and explore everything, but if you want to get to the next part it doesn't take much time at all. Plus the jeep looks fun to drive.

Love the ability to tag enemies, though not digging the huge yellow outlines that show up when close to enemies. I hope there are a few options to tweak the setting.

Excited for the Boss Battle in the game now that Druckmann showed confidence!

With all the improvements and additions to the mechanics and gameplay, they could come up with something really special.

Imagine some kind of supernatural twist again and the final Boss is Avery Undead Pirate with a huge sword and a fire gun, then you have to take him down using melee (WITH A SWORD TOO!), the rope mechanics, traversal, etc! Just give me the job already Naughty Dog.

Is this a game where we can all be reasonably confident of its quality prior to release. They have shown off 3 15 minute gameplay segments detailing 1) classic uncharted gameplay, 2) new set piece design and 3) new exploration, character dynamics and open combat sequence and I just think if the final game revolves round these three things it can't fail. They've also shown enough story to make it clear they have an interesting villain, with an engaging story about the two brothers and Drake's dilemma, that you want to see how it plays out. Lastly they've let us play the multiplayer which has gotten more or less universal praise and made people confident about the games basic mechanics.

At this point the demonstration and presentation of the game to the public has been perfect since PSX 2014 and I have little doubt that the game is going to be fairly great.

Obviously there's the caveat that they've shown the best stuff and the rest could suck ... but that doesn't strike me as what Naughty Dog would do (if this were the case it'd be lots of vague platitudes and limited showings like The Order, not the total confidence we've seen up to now).

There are things working in your mind that I can't see... but keep up the good work. ;)

No sir, i don't like where this is going.

I'm really disappointed with the alert status look during stealth. In the PSX demo they had that TLOU highlight and a bright light would show up on the corner of screen when ever you we close to being spotted. Now they have this hideous outline and a huge triangle that fills up.

Who thought that was a good idea? I would like to use that feature but now I'll have to turn it of because of how awful it looks.

I have to agree. Why on earth did they make the outline bright yellow and the triangle above their heads so big? It's a weird choice.

I always kind of considered the tank in Uncharted 2 to be a boss encounter, and that section is amazing. It's obviously not a boss in the way Vanquish has bosses or even the final boss of U2, but I think it fits.

I think it is supposed to change color or go up when the enemy is more aware of Drake's presence.

But yeah, it is fuckig ugly and totally breaks the immersion that the visuals provide. I will definitely turn it off.

Yeah I count the helicopter and tank as bosses as well. Big build up set piece encohnters that end with a direct confrontation

I believe these were partly done to mask loading times. Could they have come up with better ways to kill some time while the next area was loaded up? Most likely but they've been advancing every other element of the game play, presentation and story with each of their games so hopefully the environmental puzzles and such will be more varied and interesting. Also the technical limitations on the PS4 are far less of a constraint so forced simple puzzle sections shouldn't be needed in UC4.

But Nate can climb the stairs and enter the next area without the Jeep so hiding loading times can't be the reason for that being there.

I'm hoping we can turn off each individual thing because I want to keep the tagging system but get rid of the fluorescent yellow.

Embrace your Sword Melee final Boss battles' overlords guys!

sword melee final boss battle you say? hell to the yes if it's against Rafe, Sam etc. but supernatural pirate? no.

Sadly the only good ending boss fight was in Uncharted 2 lol. Even that one gets a lot of hate though, but I think it was solid. Not super amazing, but solid, and looked great too.

1's was OK I guess but it wasn't really even a boss fight. Just a few gated sequences + QTE at the end.

3's was awful though, that fist-fighting was so annoying, especially on Crushing, was like no indication when the fight was going to be over either, plus he could like 1 or 2 shot you...

Beautiful

It will end with Nathan Drake startled from his sleep at the desk by Elena asking if he's coming home:

Elena: 'Darling, our son wants to say goodnight.'
Drake: 'It really was all just a dream.'

They'll drive passed an old tramp begging for money who looks strikingly like Sully.

Perfect ...

That was my point. These puzzles most likely aren't in UC4 to mask load times as the PS4 has freed them from a lot of the restrictions that the PS3 placed on them. I believe they said one of the reasons we never really saw Infected Vs Humans in the main game of TLoU was because the memory pool of the system was so small it limited how many NPC's with AI could be in the same area at once and is another example of limitations of the older system forcing some design choices.

So the winch and its puzzles are there because ND wanted to do so. I also believe they said just getting around itself is a big puzzle in of itself as they said you will have to figure out how to get passed really steep or muddy terrain.

Chapter 10..."about a third of the way in"...

Promising.

A third.... wow.

I guess that's kind of in line with the previous games, around 25 chapters each? At least from what I recall.

I'm going to guess each chapter in this game is longer though, with the pretty big vehicle traversal elements and all.

This playthrough overall shows the shooting mechanics a little better. Enemy hit reactions, weapon feedback and sounds, etc all seem like a massive step up from the previous games. I thought the betas played great but my biggest concern was that AI enemies would continue to have poor hit location based hit reactions from UC1-3, so good to see they've fixed that.

I am a bit curious what difficulty they were playing on. It seems like the enemies lost track of the player pretty easily and were not as persistent as I thought.

I commented on this already. Uncharted 2 was the longest Uncharted game, at 26 or 27 chapters.

So if Uncharted 4 is the longest, it's (at least relatively) about 30 chapters long. And that would put chapter 10 (i.e. this press blowout) about a third of the way in.

Damn straight.

I bet you think QB looks amazing

Quantum Break is indeed amazing and looks amazing, too. Just because someone said something you deem unwise, it doesn't mean you have to stoop to their level also. I do think it's very odd that the person you quoted doesn't find this visually impressive, but you really have no grounds to chalk it up to "warz".

We don't know how long chapters are so I'm not too sure about that. Some are quite lengthy, others are like five minutes.

The previews did say it was about a third of the way through. This is probably before the jeep escape stuff from E3 since this seems to be the first time we're using the jeep.

When I said the above, I hedged it with 'relatively'. The actual chapter count might be 26 or 27, just like Uncharted 2, but if it's longer than Uncharted 2 (straight from the horse i.e. Druckmann's mouth) then relatively in Uncharted 2 terms, it's about 28 or 29, maybe 30 chapters long. Even at 28 chapters, chapter 10 is roughly a third of the way through.

Minor nitpick. I don't like how the font looks when the chapter appears on screen. In the game subtitle it looks good though.

It's the combination of the written effect and the shadow. Pretty insignificant, but it stood out to me.

That's relative. There could be the same amount, or even less, longer chapters. Although you're probably right.

As far as I'm concerned, I like it. The effect could be a bit slower like it's the case for the title in the trailers.

Just because the font looks cool. :D

I've always loved the chapter titles appearing in Uncharted, and I don't really know why. I guess it gives the story a more tangible sense of progression and segmentation without actually breaking up the flow of the game?

I like the new font. It fits with the pirate theme they have going.

I see them as milestones and the beginning of a mini adventure within the bigger adventure.

Yeah, in the actual title it looks great. It just doesn't look as nice to me when the chapter appears.

Again, it's pretty insignificant, and it's a non issue really.

I'm with you on this. The new font and the "writing" animation are both really great but something about the drop shadow and thin outline on the text make it look kinda... amateur Photoshop-y and feel clashing with the rest of the UI and text presentation. Maybe a little more shadow blur, losing the outline and making the backing darker would have been better imo. It definitely stuck out to me in an otherwise super polished presentation.
