I'll get around to this eventually though. It's like 25 bucks Canadian here.

Also man I dunno, I guess I didn't grow up with FF so I don't have the nostalgia for the series. Playing FF7 right now and it's kinda awkward and I question a lot of the design decisions that game has. I don't mean the JRPG trappings, but a lot of the systems around it.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
That's really....super depressingly accurate. On a side note, being that I never played X and up, does that trend ever change??

Tidus wasn't a depressed emo teenager, he was spunky
and people can find it annoying
.

FFXII had Vaan, who was non-existent and the real hero was Balthier, who was awesome.

Nah he's mostly right. It's not the worst FF (that's 4), but it's a pretty boring nostaliga-driven entry which doesn't have much to say or offer on its own. Bad villains, silly plot, way too much omg-look-at-me-remember-me references to older FFs. Gimme something unique and different like FF8 any day. Or something that offers a truly fleshed out gameplay system like FFV's job system.

But it's so charming!

I can definitely see why someone would find IX boring though, for the exact reasons you've listed, although silly plot and bad villains are kind of no-brainers with most jrpgs.

It seems there are a lot of problems, including controllers don't be recognized in the game.

My DS4 connected via DS4Windows works perfectly. Vibration is supported and all.

When I first got to the point where I could control Zidane I found that it was constantly trying to walk left and I couldn't get control of him. I just tabbed over to another window and back into the game and it fixed this.

Tidus is annoying as hell, but he does show development throughout the overall story arc.

Vann may as well be air. Entire story revolves around Ashe.

Let's not get into Lightning.

Lightning was basically a female Cloud.

p.s.

I've installed and started the game

I didn't have to install any Android plugins

(lol)

Just great.

It's possible, but we only know of around 40 of those that still exist out of hundreds that are in the game.

Cheers, thought the majority would be missing. It'd make some parts look great, but likely be too jarring to actually get through the game.

Still, tempted to pick this up tonight if general consensus is good.

Some early impressions:

It's basically exactly what I expected: the mobile version wrought large for the PC. The menu interface is slightly different, not scaled as large as in the mobile version.

But it's otherwise the same awesome redone character models and the same low-res background art with just a little bit of filtering done to make it not quite as messy (but still pretty messy). Supports resolutions up to 2556x1440 and makes full use of that in the newly rendered parts. Not just the character models but also the menu icons and the TT cards are all redrawn.

It feels a hell of a lot snappier and quicker to load than the original. Remember: turn on "Skip Battle Camera" in the options and it eliminates the pan over the battlefield at the start of all but boss battles. Also make sure you turn the Battle Speed slider to max. Do both, and you should have no complaints about speed even without using the 3x option.

I'm sure a lot of people are going to whine about the background art, but realistically this port is, I feel, better than I would have expected. It's certainly a nicer PC port than what FFVII and VIII got.

Playable with mouse alone?

I'm not sure if you were joking but I'm currently clicking to make Zidane move.

(I guess that functionality was already kinda on the mobile version)

edit: Nope, only movement. Interacting with stuff requires keyboard

Huh so this is almost 2 months to the day (Wednesday of second week of Feb, Thursday of second week of April).

Wonder if they had some pre-determined time frame to soak up mobile sales or some sort of agreement, might explain the weird midnight launch.

Came here to post: Fucking finally now they can move on to X/X-2.

I see my job has already been done. Well done Durante.

Then they can publish XII and XV:p

Will probably buy this sometime soon, just to support the devs mostly. No time to replay.

I always had trouble with the parts where it changes the speed of the jump rope. And you really need to be patient and concentrated to do these jumps 1000 freaking times.

Honestly, watching the rope itself is a mistake. Listen for the hops, and time your button press on those instead. You'll get to triple digits in no time. After that, it's just a matter of patience, which isn't hard since the pattern doesn't change after...200 I think.

Somehow I'm feeling less adventurous in exploring further FFs.

nice to see it finally out
now FF1,FF2, FFT, FF X and X-2 ;-)
Would even like the square mobile ports of DQ or Mana series or Chrono Trigger ;-)

I think the mod community will be able to do some really nice things with this game with texture packs, and I'm sure somebody will be industrious enough to go through and put every piece of background art in the game through a better filter than the one SST used.

Game doesn't like me starting with the controller already on, so it doesn't work, turn it on only after the game starts.

What kind of controller? I didn't have that issue.

Actually, I used to think the same when it came out. But growing older, I have come to understand its themes better and could be the most mature entry in FF thematically.

Its main theme is of loss and life, and how learning to accept it to move on. Even its final boss
Necron
is a allegory for the end.

Yes it does have a nostalgic flair to it, its like a good bye to the old times, which are never to return.

Okay, impressions:

Mouse support! Doesn't do everything, but you can click anywhere to move there, then click thought bubbles and menu selections to interact with them, and do battles completely with mouse.

Battles:
- Camera and animations at 15FPS, UI (ATB, damage numbers) refreshes much faster at refresh rate or 60fps (i'm not bothering to change my refresh rate around to test this).
- Speeding up or skipping battles deals with my biggest gripe with replaying FFIX

Music:
- True to PSX version. Thankfully avoided the shenanigans that VII and VIII Steam had at launch. Maybe not having a prior PC version is a blessing in disguise, hahaha

Graphics:
- Updated models REALLY pop
- I'm pretty sure the FMVs, or at least some of them, and at least the intro, are higher reso than the PSX encodes. You're welcome to make your own conclusion from screenies below
- Backgrounds are upscaled, still has some tiling issues. :( Oh well

Definitely looking forward to sinking time into this again. I dunno if I'll ever have enough time to do the cheevo grind but I need to play this again at some point.

Screenshots: Sorry, was playing in a 1600x900 window, so no 1080p. edit: I don't' know why I wasn't just playing in a 4:3 window, heh. Oh well, at least the shots are useful for people asking how widescreen is handled.

More on the enhanced mobile/Steam UI: Interactions show up this way now

You can tap (or click, w/ mouse) on cards to play cards, etc.

My thoughts exactly. Forced them to start fresh and use what's been learned from mistakes on past ports.

They are, without a doubt. Compare them to the version on PSN on a television through PS3 and there's absolutely no question that these come from a pre-compression source.

That said, the framerates on the FMVs are still low. You can't create frames that weren't there in the first place of course, so who knows if they were created that way originally or not. You can use frame interpolation to get "best guess" intermediate video frames, but that probably falls right in line with "redrawn background art" as something that wasn't likely to happen.

Backgrounds are upscaled, still has some tiling issues. :( Oh well

I still can't see these alleged tiles on my screen, but then the backgrounds are so muddy I'm honestly not sure it even matters if they're there or not.

Suppose I could do a cheese run using all the boosters and encounters off to get that one, after getting the other 84 naturally.
