I need 1 dock and 2 tablets. Trust I won't be they only one either. The dock will have "guts" that I just won't need. I also think that the portable crowd won't need the dock at first either.

This console is the very definition of optionallity. Modules for controllers, selfie sticks, docks and Lord knows what else.

This is why I think they need a cheap SKU without a dock, so you can buy two tablet switchs one with the dock and one without it, instead of buying two more expensive dock units that come with the tablet controller, you buy one with the dock and one without it

You leave take it on the go, they are home can play on the tv

I know I was one of the pushers of the hybrid theory, but in all honesty, my prediction was more a powerful DS with TV play.

This is a WiiU with the off TV play working anywhere. So instead of leveraging their successful console line, they're leveraging the most unsuccessful console line. Not sure how that'll play out.

Considering they just came out and said it's a "home console first and foremost" I can't see them releasing a dockless SKU, or multiple SKUs of any time really, at least not at launch. The entire focus of that 3 minute trailer was on the core concept of gaming at home and on the go. The console is called Switch for crying out loud. You expect them to release a Switch SKU that removes the thing that lets you "switch"?

I think they'd look great if they did:

handheld alone for $199 (for the handheld audience, prices it below 3DS when it launched)

handheld+dock for $249 (for the console audience, prices it below the Wii U AND below the PS4/Xbone currently)

handheld+dock+pro controller+zelda+other goodies (Zelda VC games, special gold console, whatever extra cool shit) for $299 or maybe $349. basically for the hardcores who want to give Nintendo money.

Nintendo being Nintendo, though, I expect to be stubborn and refuse to sell it without the dock. Even though you can get the full experience just with the handheld, or just with the tv...

Not gonna happen because the "handheld" has all the internal guts and the dock does nothing.

Absolutely, it will. Not including the dock would be antithetical to the system's purpose.
Yeah, how can it be the Switch if you can't actually switch?

Remember though, this is Nintendo we're talking about. The Nintendo that doesn't provide an AC adapter with handhelds, and makes retro consoles with 20cm controller cables.

While I agree, I hope they give players who drop/break the portable a way to buy that portion without having to buy another dock.

Edit: Or families who only need one dock but want multiple handhelds.

Why are we not calling it the NS?

Also, any confirmed motion tech on the controllers? The trailer didn't have any wii sports-ish games, and I'm hoping it does.

Looks decent but once again Nintendo seems to be preaching to the converted.

Not really sure who this is meant to appeal to besides Nintendo devotees.

I assume all chance of 3DS and Wii U games being playable is out the window right? At least until they transition to "virtual console" status

My god. They've done it. THIS is what I want a modern age console to be.

I wasn't even planning on getting an NX right away but, hell, I'm not even going to bother with the Wii US version of Zelda at this point.

I just hope the new Mario is more in the vein of 3D World vs. Galaxy. But that's just me. I'll take both.

And the people laughing at the name, you're just doomed to repeat history. No one thinks twice now when someone says Wii.

I look forward to seeing Microsoft and Sony's "answer" to whatever "revolution" Nintendo starts with this. If one does happen.

I'm gonna be real disappointed if they totally ditch motion controls and touch screen. would be a pretty bizarre move to not at least leave the option there

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.
I'm so disappointment by the name. Probably the worst console name of all time.

I hope it does well.

I'm weirdly excited for the fact that some solo player games could be released with special joycon controllers (two of them or just one), and that would be pretty awesome to tailor a controller just for a game !

I'm really underwhelmed by the Switch reveal. I like my consoles looking sleek like a sports car, but the Switch looks like an ugly jagged boxy car.

Honestly, the more I think about the design, the more I like. I've kept up on GAF and read the rumors and all that, but now that it's out there I've really realized what this means in regards to my sensibilities as a gamer. I love my handhelds, like a lot and I love my consoles and normally (save cross save stuff) the two never interact or meet. Maybe sometimes I want Pokemon on the TV or Skyrim on the go or w/e and this...this is that. I can take it anywhere and play it in any number of ways, and any game I buy for it is usable wherever I want it to be. I mean, that'd all kind of "duh" stuff, but the trailer this morning really was moment where I was like, "holy shit, this is what I've always wanted."

They'll need to do an entry cost level version though.

When Pokémon comes out, if it's like $250/$300 still, then that's going to seriously dent their most popular franchise.

I fully expect a portable only version, smaller, perhaps with a dock that can be purchased if necessary

Again, it mostly depends on the cost savings. If there's some kind of weird shit going on in the dock or the grip that makes them expensive to manufacture, an SKU without them makes sense. But if the dock is just a fancy USB hub/charging station and the grip is nothing but a hunk of plastic that you can plug the controllers into for added comfort, then doing a second SKU just to drop less than $50 off the price doesn't really make sense.

...then again, this *is* the company that didn't include an AC adapter with the New 3DS. So you never know.

The name is pretty bad but the console itself is interesting.

I adored the Wii U and I'll probably get one of these at some point, when probably depends on the price.

Interesting. Not sure about the controller. Will wait to see more but the hybrid idea is what I wanted most. Plus it will probably be the only place to play Monster Hunter.

I don't think it'll be a touchscreen.

They already need to design games without touch functionality since the screen is docked when you're playing.

I'd think, at least at release, there won't be any single-piece SKUs at retailers, and instead they'll be available only on Nintendo's site like someone else mentioned. From the reveal trailer and what they've said about it being a home console first and foremost, Nintendo seems to have learned their lesson with getting the marketing correct from the get-go, so I think they'll try not to muck it up by confusing people with several split-up SKUs.

I really hope the UI of the console matches the aesthetic they're going for with the hardware. I thought the UI of DS/WiiU etc was godawful. Very Japanese, weird pastel colours, very bright and garish all round. It's like everybodys golf or something. Nice for particular titles wanting that fun Japanese arcade game aesthetic but as the foundation of your whole system UI, no thanks. Hope it's fairly sleek. Doesn't need to be joyless, just tone down the overbearing Japanese UI style...

bish gets all the credit :)
This thing seems really risky for Nintendo. You have the Nintendo diehards that will buy anything they put out (around 15 million people or so). Assuming they bought the Wii U and 3DS, that's 15 million "guaranteed" sales they've lost due to combining the two systems. A flop with this hurts them tremendously as they've thrown all their eggs into the same basket.

Makes sense to me but they'd have to be very careful communicating that to customers through the packaging. Defeats the purpose of the Switch name though...

Might not be worth the headache after Wii U.

The middle attachment has to come with the any version of the console. Or else it's just portable. I don't think people are going to be cool with just using two detached controllers in most cases.

Yeah you're probably right.... I would think they would add more than just a pro controller for $349 though, maybe a carrying case or something we haven't seen yet. Of course this is all speculation based on the rumored bundles, but it seems likely.

Anyway i'll stop there but in a sense, what i'm saying is, in my opinion this thing can find a way to a success, probably more than the WiiU in its time, cause the concept is just more modern and unique, but it also have all the little seeds for absolute failure. This is a risky move for Nintendo.

To be fiar any move would be risk to Nintendo, they took what it seems the less risky and logical one.

Can you elaborate on what you believe the difference is? If it has to do with the size of the unit, I'm sure there will be a smaller unit in the future on the same "Switch" platform.

There is no way in hell Nintendo is gonna sell the handheld or the dock separately at launch. There might be a handheld-only or home-only option down the road, but not at launch.

"It's a home console you can take on the go!" is the entire point of the console. It's the entire marketing message. Heck, it's literally the name of the console. They're not gonna turn around and announce that you can buy the handheld separately in a month.
