PlayStation 4 Pro Reviews

People have been saying ND promised a better UC4 update in the future.

Is there any source/truth to that?

Tf2 will look great in 1440/60

Don't forget previous was around 900

They didn't promise anything, but Cerny has said Naughty Dog is looking into different/new rendering techniques for their Pro update. That makes it seem like they're working on something more substantial than this relatively basic Pro support package.

Also, there's still single-player DLC to come so many (including myself) believe that expanded support will drop around that time.

Right on. I might put off replaying it til we get that patch than.

Still need to replay TLOU anyways.

The new rendering technique is the 1440p res that we are seeing. They were using checkerboard rendering before, but they ended up scrapping it. This is all acording to DF's video.

SFV Pro patch would be nice, maybe we'll get something from Capcom at next month's 2016 PSX Capcom tournament

Didn't see that yet. But that's.....surprising and underwhelming. What's new about that?

Push square is a PlayStation only brand website.
And the world's biggest PlayStation podcast spreads a lot of negativity about the "unforced error" Pro. So what, it doesn't neccessarily mean Push Square publishes lies. He just said the noise of the Slim when a Blu-ray spins in drive is annoying him, maybe he got a faulty drive there. With just the hard drive spinning, he called the Pro comparable to the Slim. Doesn't sound extremely far fetched to me, and it wasn't a scientific measurement, maybe just a bit overexcited for the clicks. ;)

And they are not the only ones calling the Pro silent, here are some more:

It should be, but it's definitely there. Whether it's running at a variable resolution, but higher, I have no idea. I'll do some screenshots later of what I mean

The OG PS4 version already runs at almost 1080p when there isn't a lot going on.
What we need is a comparison in both res and framerate in a 64 player match.

Edit: I'd be very much appreciated if anyone with a Pro could record two quick clips like that.

If Op is not mature enough to even provide neutral descriptive links to reviews, we'll be glad to give the thread responsibility to someone else

This is my feeling also...

Congrats to all that will be playing with their new system.

Looks like a solid piece of kit.

So I assume games like BF1, FIFA, Mafia 3 and so on will get updates on Thursday? Can't believe we haven't heard much about so many games with Pro updates for launch.

Can someone who already has a Pro and Battlefield 1 post up comparison screenshots between the Pro version and the normal version so we can see if it came with Pro support built in like TitanFall did?

Apparently Titanfall didn't require a patch and is ready for the Pro right off the disc.

Push square is a PlayStation only brand website. Is it not reasonable to think there may be a little bias. Im wondering how come it's included at all. Maybe I'm wrong but I find it very strange that this is the first person that actually says it's a lot more quiet than any other PlayStation.

Can only say what I've experienced myself, to be honest. Here's my PS4 Pro running inFAMOUS: Second Son on Blu-ray: https://twitter.com/_get2sammyb/status/795645591107862528

Please note: PSVR processing unit is nearby which I think is louder than the PS4 Pro console itself, so that's certainly contributing to some of the noise you hear in that video.

Your wrong, dude. Games need a patch to do anything with the power of the Pro, period. BF1 very likely has support already. The CPU and GPU both match the speeds of a regular PS4 when running an unpatched game.

How many times do people need to be told this. We have had the initial leak, Digital Foundry, and god damn Mark Cerny himself say that there will be NO performance boosts of any kind with an unpatched game.
Never said it was using the full power of the Pro. It's the fact that it is indeed clocking down from a higher state that it will not be a 1:1 exact thing.

Unfortunately this is completely wrong. PS4 Pro reduces all it's clock speeds and disables all the extra stuff when running in base mode. Performance will be exactly the same as on OG PS4.
You literally state what happens for base mode, but GPU, CPU, and RAM changes do not equal to the EXACT power of the PS4 when clocking down. It will be a minor difference, wherein Battlefield 1 for instance can sustain 1080p more often than it does on vanilla PS4 (which does happen).

You don't have to believe me, though. Soon you'll all have had some time with a Pro (or at least a chance to). Bring your capture devices and frame-counting software, since we can't show anything from test kits.

Wouldn't a post like this go in the Xbox One S OT thread? Did you accidentally post it in here or something because this is the review thread lol.

Seems like there are a lot of irrelevant justification posts like that from Xbox fanboys in Pro threads from what I've seen on Neogaf of late. Comes off as pretty insecure tbh.

The patch was on the disc; there still was a patch that had to be made.

If you set your ps4 as 4k then everything will be soft upscaled to your tv. In the end your 4k tv can only show in 1 resolution only

So when you say "soft upscaled," it's being displayed at a 4K resolution where each pixel is shown 4 times, but no work is being done to make this image look closer to 4K?

Pretty confused here. I don't remember where, but yesterday I read that BF1 is now native 1080p with a framerate that is much more stable that stays real close to 60fps all the time. Which version was that then?

There's no comments on bf1 yet. Whatever you read wasn't official.

This sucks.

I sold my PS4 a month ago because I was so excited. Now, 2 days out I have zero excitement. I was hoping this would feel like a new console launch for me. This has been handled so poorly. If fans like us are meh about it you know the general public does not give a single fuck.

Don't know why you are not excited but I can't wait for the shipping notification from amazon :D. Super excited and happy what I, as a 1080p TV owner, will get.

So you expected something it never was. The only one to blame is yourself.

Speak for yourself....i'm sure that some people are "meh about it", but I certainly am not. I can't wait for Thursday. If there's anything that i'm meh about, it's the huge amounts of misinformation and sky is falling posts that are all over the place here intermingled with facts. It's very hard to know for sure what's fact and what is people just blowing shit out of proportion.

Sucks to be you, I'm buzzing for Thursday.

This is not "Pro" mode for BF1. It's just slight increase in performance as BF1 has dynamic resolution. People thinking there will be 0 difference running unpatched PS4 games in the Pro seem to not comprehend how hardware works. Then we have those that spam the 1-3fps boost *some* games get on Xbox One S as some gigantic reason the PS4 Pro is bad.
what you are saying here is exact opposite of what Digital Foundry has shown.

Unpached game on PS4 and PS4 Pro has same performance and same FPS drops.

Unpached game on Xbox One S has significantly better performance and less FPS drops than Xbox One.

I wonder if Sony capped the PS4 OG performance to please the publishers and give them more control? If the games automatically scaled to the increased performance, it could negate the need for remasters which have undoubtedly been a major revenue stream for publishers recently.

I'm not buying in to Cerny's 'full compatibility' nonsense. I refuse to believe the PS4 SDK is that flaky.

Kind of a random yet still related question.

I've always noticed Bloodborne looked softer, yet had less aliasing on my friend's TV (which is 720p only). Was that because considering Bloodborne was a 1080p game, that it was in effect supersampling down to his 720p display?

It is a shame that due to no info on this game I might cancel my preorder. This is what I am playing at the moment and I am not interested in any "old" games which I already forgot.
Things are getting even more confusing related to that patch as shown here.

EU blog : BF1 is in the list:

US blog : BF is not present:

Are we even getting a patch for BF1 :/ ?

I simply see no reason for them to do this, either. Why can't they just have base games run that little bit better? I'm still getting this, but I'm much more excited for Scorpio. Feel like MS has a better handle on how to go forward.

Yup. Very few games change their actual framebuffer to the resolution ouput. Last example I remember was GT6 which allowed for a more stable framerate in 720p mode.

Yes.
Ps4 prepares framebuffer for 1080p resolution and then downscales result for other modes.

somebody told me this on twitter..

Got a PS4 pro today and it says on the press release that Battlefield 1 is available to play from launch (10th)

Yeah that makes sense. It's not like there were any performance changes when outputting Bloodborne at 720p. Not gonna lie though in some instances the game just looked better on his 720p screen than my 1080p tv. I guess supersampling has it's benefits.

Reading and watching these reviews, it's clear that this isn't for me. I wanted the push to get a PS4 and I was super excited for it. Now all the hype is gone. I'll probably just get a slim bundle. Kinda sad.

I'm still excited for Scorpio. I hope MS learns from Sony's mistakes here. I'm not interested in being disappointed twice.

Well it is available to play, isn't it? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Disappointed by what exactly ?

We've known about this for months. Its your fault.

Scorpio will do the same thing because semi custom Zen will not be ready by next year. I'm not exactly sure where the confusion comes from in regards to your attitude.

These are iterative units, they run the same games, at slightly better graphical settings and higher resolutions. There's nothing confusing or mysterious about them. They are not a new generation and never have been sold as a new generation to start with.

Project cars is the biggest example one can find, and it is the exception to the rule, as DF have also said.
