Mario Kart Switch: all Wii U + new tracks, characters, battle mode, < 3 mos fr launch

damn, if they ampin the number of tracks even more than the WiiU's already incredible quantity this gonna be one heck of a neverending online fest. Can't wait

Does Pikachu have his own game though? He's just one of many Pokemon after all. Would your Average Joe even know what "Pikachu" is?

Kirby has tons of games where he's the main star going back nearly 20 years. Most of them are really well reviewed and sell well too. He's also had his own show, whereas Pikachu is, again, just part of Pokemon and Ash's sidekick in the cartoon (I don't know if Ash is still around honestly).

I'd say Kirby wins this one.

Kirby may have more games sure, but Pikachu is the face of Pokemon, I don't think I've ever met someone who didn't know who Pikachu was, he's not just like any other Pokemon.

Pikachu might even be more well known than Mario at this point

Yes, the average person knows who Pikachu is. He's in the Thanksgiving parade!

Kirby always wished he was in the parade, ever since his first game

I bet I could hold up a picture of Kirby to ten people at random who no little about video games and more would ask if that was another pokemon than not

Pikachu isn't a shoe-in; Pokemon cameos are difficult to negotiate and even just characters like Link and Isabelle take more effort to negotiate than you might expect.

Pikachu maybe because Game Freak is in a first party / second party relationship. How could Link possibly require negotiating at all?

I've heard 16, but not sure if that is the final number for new tracks.

That's pretty nice numbers.

I'd assume 16 new-new tracks, but can't say with confidence one way or the other.

I really hope that we are going to get 8 new tracks and 8 retro tracks. I would be okay with 16 brand new tracks if they have something up in their sleeves, like 8 new tracks from Nintendo IPs. ;)

I guess Nintendo's actually keeping a tight lid on Smash 4 Switch leaks (aside from its existence).

As for me, I'm anxiously waiting for Cloud, Corrin, & Bayonetta's Amiibos.

Same here for last three Smash Amiibo. With those so much leaks so I actually wonder why there is no leak for Smash Bros? Unless there is no new contents. Or they learned from their own lessons from last time.

Expected, really.
8 new tracks would be too light of new content for current Wii U owners to even look at the port while 32 tracks literally stand as a brand new sequel on their own.

64 tracks total is nothing to sneeze at tbh. Hopefully they give us the option to select the tracks we actually want instead of 3 options + random on online mode tho.
I swear we play Big Blue or Baby Park every 2 races.

Don't be jealous. Baby Park is awesome! :x

Why didn't they just make Mario Kart 9?

They would have had to start from scratch and ended up creating a game that at base would contain only 2/3s of Mario Kart 8's content (as far as tracks go). Honestly it's better for them to go with the expanded port route when MK8 is feature-rich enough as it is, but still with room for improvement.

Why didn't they just make Mario Kart 9?

Because the end result would be likely the same ? It wouldnt be released anytime near launch ? Would have way less content from the get go ? There are plenty of reason.

Best MK ever with + 60 tracks and a legit battle mode. Not the worst decision.

I honestly don't know what they could add more after MK8 kinda did everything but the double dash item system until now. If this game has twice the cups like last time in addition of battle mode, then it's going to be a very popular online game.

And it will release within 3 months of launch.

P.S. if you didn't see the other thread, we're now looking at:

Splatoon packed in in deluxe model at launch
3D Mario Switch at launch
Skyrim at launch
MK within 3 months of launch
Zelda several months after launch
Smash at some point not at launch

(Presumably IMO other title(s) at launch and plenty throughout the year.)

Oh shit, Mortal Kombat is finally back on a Nintendo system!?

The way they're porting MK8, Splatoon and Smash but with new content originally had me worried. Love the games and they're all polished as hell, but new console new games is what I've come to expect.

I guess it all depends just how much new content they get. If they add pretty much a whole new games worth of content it'll be good. And update the graphics.

If we just get the same games with a few extra features, and no graphical updates, honestly I'll be pretty annoyed if these take the place of MK9, Smash 5 and Splatoon 2.

We are years into this generation and still getting remasters...and most of them don't even have new content.

I do hope they polish the graphics up, and not let that extra power go to waste, at least make MK and Splatoon 1080p.

I'm in for a refreshed MK8. I'd love more tracks and (thank god) a better battle mode.

However as I've said recently, the roster has too much bloat. I'm fine with them adding in brand new characters or even characters from previous games, but make existing characters (babies, metal/animal mario and peach, koopa kids) just alternate costumes. Smash 4 did this right with Olimar and Alph.

It wouldn't surprise me if they threw in Captain Falcon to go along with the F-Zero DLC tracks. I'd also love it if Captain Toad made an appearance as a new racer.

I would like to believe that Captain Toad is more likely to be in as playable character because they already expressed the interest to bring him in.

Captain Falcon and Splatoon character in Mario Kart would be awesome. 8 new tracks from Mushroom Kingdom and 8 new tracks from Nintendo Universe would be amazing. :o

8 new tracks from Kid Icarus, Pikmin, Splatoon, etc.

>captain falcon gets added to mario kart

>average neogaf post goes "wow cool we don't even need f-zero anymore!"

>what little is left of my hopes and optimisms dies a crushing death

I guess I am in the minority but I'd rather Mario Kart stay Mario Kart and maybe just have a couple cameos, rather than become Nintendo Kart.

I agree, but I think it's refreshing to expand here and there.

I mean, it's always been Nintendo Kart to a degree, with DK and Diddy etc. (regardless of Mario's origins).

Alright, so what past courses do you want in the game, if there are going to be retro courses made. For me, I decided to just go with ones that haven't been remade already (Even though Mario Kart 8 already has a few of these), and have made the following list:

Sunset Wilds (GBA)
Mushroom City (GCN)
Mario Circuit (DS)
Bananan Jungle (Combination of the two similar tracks (DK Jungle and Bananan ruins) from Arcade GP)

Toad's Factory (Wii)
Wuhu Loop (3DS)
Wario Stadium (N64)
Yoshi Park (Combination of Yoshi Park 1 and 2 from Arcade GP 2)

Lakeside Park (GBA)
Daisy Circuit (Wii)
Rosalina's Ice World (3DS)
Diamond Panic (Combination of Diamond City + Snow Panic from Arcade GP)

Wario's Colosseum (GCN)
Bowser's Castle (DS)
Moonview Highway (Wii)
Rainbow Roads (Combination of Rainbow Coaster and Rainbow Downhill from Arcade GP)

The combination tracks work like Sonic All Stars Racers Transformed, in which it's the first track for the first two laps, then the 2nd track for the last lap.

And since battle mode needs some old courses as well:

Double Deck (N64) (But I wouldn't mind Block Fort again)
Nintendo Gamecube (GCN)
Tart Top (DS)
Funky Stadium (Wii)
Luigi's Mansion (GCN)

If these rumors are all as reliable as they claim, and Kart AND Smash AND Zelda are not going to make the Switch launch day... why not just delay the Switch so it can have games out of the gate? Haven't we been here before?

which is kind of pathetic in a way, considering how simple it is.

Since when is simplicity inherently bad? That arena is pure genius, maniac chaos for all!

3D Mario, Skyrim, Splatoon and all the stuff we don't yet know about surely count as games...

I understand the love for Block Fort, guys, but.... c'mon, it's 2016 and the MK team has made one of (if not THE) best MK ever, I'm sure they can come up with something for battle mode that can be equally or more compelling and this idea that Block Fort is sacrosanct is getting a bit much.

After the MK8 DLC, I don't see how the series benefits at the end of the day from staying "pure" to Mario. The non-Mario Nintendo IP stages are great, and more of them would hurt no one.
