Mario Kart Switch: all Wii U + new tracks, characters, battle mode, < 3 mos fr launch

Does Pikachu have his own game though? He's just one of many Pokemon after all. Would your Average Joe even know what "Pikachu" is?

Kirby has tons of games where he's the main star going back nearly 20 years. Most of them are really well reviewed and sell well too. He's also had his own show, whereas Pikachu is, again, just part of Pokemon and Ash's sidekick in the cartoon (I don't know if Ash is still around honestly).

I'd say Kirby wins this one.

This is sarcasm right?

Pikachu is the public face of Pokémon and never in a million years does Kirby come anywhere near in the measure 'Does the average Joe know pikachu/Kirby'. Very few people in first world countries wouldn't be able to recognise pikachu.

Alright, so what past courses do you want in the game, if there are going to be retro courses made. For me, I decided to just go with ones that haven't been remade already (Even though Mario Kart 8 already has a few of these), and have made the following list:

Sunset Wilds (GBA)
Mushroom City (GCN)
Mario Circuit (DS)
Bananan Jungle (Combination of the two similar tracks (DK Jungle and Bananan ruins) from Arcade GP)

Toad's Factory (Wii)
Wuhu Loop (3DS)
Wario Stadium (N64)
Yoshi Park (Combination of Yoshi Park 1 and 2 from Arcade GP 2)

Lakeside Park (GBA)
Daisy Circuit (Wii)
Rosalina's Ice World (3DS)
Diamond Panic (Combination of Diamond City + Snow Panic from Arcade GP)

Wario's Colosseum (GCN)
Bowser's Castle (DS)
Moonview Highway (Wii)
Rainbow Roads (Combination of Rainbow Coaster and Rainbow Downhill from Arcade GP)

The combination tracks work like Sonic All Stars Racers Transformed, in which it's the first track for the first two laps, then the 2nd track for the last lap.

And since battle mode needs some old courses as well:

Double Deck (N64) (But I wouldn't mind Block Fort again)
Nintendo Gamecube (GCN)
Tart Top (DS)
Funky Stadium (Wii)
Luigi's Mansion (GCN)
Some of the tracks on your list look way too similar to some of the tracks already in the game. If there's something Kart 8 excels at is the theme variety of tracks.

Sunset wilds - cheese land
Mushroom city - toad's turnpike
Mario Circuit - self explanatory
Wario Stadium -self explanatory
Rosalina's Ice world - sherbet land
Moonview highway - toad's turnpike
Bowser castle - self explanatory

They're great tracks, no doubt but since we're not getting a brand new game I'd rather see tracks that don't look like stuff we already have seen.

All the retro tracks in MK8 are made from the ground up tho, so they're pretty much like new tracks based on old tracks, it's not like on MKWii where they just ported tracks from DD.

To be picky, Rainbow Road SNES was taken from Mario Kart 7.

We have three Rainbow Roads in the game.

Nintendo is finally catching up on contemporary gaming trends by re-releasing previous gen games.

That's what I mean. We don't really need more tracks that look like stuff we already have.
Havin 3 tracks with the same theme out of 48 doesn't discredit what I said. MK8 does an excellent job at the track variety compared to past games.

This is great news! I will not be picking up a copy for the Wii-U knowing this. (I've been borrowing a copy from a friend).

FFS, I have to buy a Switch AND this game again (likely at a $50 full price) to get the Battle Mode that should have been in the game originally, 3 years ago? Why does this content have to be exclusive. They should let Wii U owners get it as DLC too.

Why? You already answered your own question.
So people have to buy a Switch AND this game again ;)

I guess I am in the minority but I'd rather Mario Kart stay Mario Kart and maybe just have a couple cameos, rather than become Nintendo Kart.

I agree. There are still so many other characters from the Mario universe that they could add. They should have priority over outsiders.

They're better off making a separate kart series for Nintendo characters. That way they won' t be limited to the 25-year long-established structure of the Mario Kart series, which has been a fairly traditional, conservative series for most of its history. A separate Nintendo Kart could be something really distinct and fresh.

That's the catch, though: people don't have to buy either of those things, they merely choose to. It's in Nintendo's best interest to price the game in a way that makes it an easy choice, IMO. It's only natural that some aren't happy with the outcome when we're left to assume that won't be the case. I think it will be personally and they'll price it low, but others think differently on the matter.

No it hasn't, that's the whole point I was making actually. SNES Rainbow Road is remade from the ground up for MK8, just like every other retro track in MK8. MK8 doesn't use assets from previous versions, everything is new.

OK sure, I didn't mean they literally took the MK7 track and put it in 8, of course they remade assets, but things like the bump placements, almost all the coins and the concept that the Thwomps make the track womble i.e. all the re-imagining of the track, was lifted from MK7.

Like I said, it was just a picky point.

Still only one track out of 15 completely new ones.

I really wish they would ditch the anti-grav stuff from MK8.

I love MK7's gliding and the underwater is okay but the anti-grav stuff always make the circuit design feel pointless to me.

If Baby Park wasnt entirely in anti grav it would be one of the worst DLC tracks because of the lack of character specific items.

What are character specific items? Is this some double dash thing?
(I only spent 10 minutes with double dash, I really didn't like it for some reason)

I remember Baby Park being pretty fun on MK DS.

Yeah, DD had character specific items, like a giant banana for the Kongs or a giant Koopa shell for Bowser and Jr.

Since the course is so small you have lots of crazy items all over the place leading to a lot of chaos.

January 12th can't come soon enough.

First time in years that I'll most likely get a Nintendo home console again.

I hope when Mario Kart 8+ (Switch) has 96 levels when all is said and done with new DLC levels

Now that is maybe asking too much. Baby steps 1st. :P

If they make a lot of DLC content, I hope they make some of it available for everyone to play during special events. It would be great if one week per month they picked a random DLC track and made it free for everyone to play on.

I could see 80 tracks (20 cups) happening but 96 tracks, no way.

8 cups (MK8) + 4 cups (MK8 DLC) + 4 cups (MKS) + 4 cups (MKS DLC) = 20 cups

20 cups x 4 tracks = 80 tracks.

That's big if we are getting DLC for Mario Kart Switch.

You are very out of touch :p

Give me some more GBA retro tracks if they're anything like cheese land and ribbon road. They may as well be considered completely new tracks.

Oh and I'd appreciate wario shipyard, mushoom city/Moonview highway and one of the snes bowser castles.

RIP social life? Play games with friends every once in while :P Mario kart mixes well with a few drinks
I don't drink.

All my friends are on Xbox lol. And I don't even have an Xbox I got a PS4 and 3DS.

They left Ninty after the N64 and one survived till GameCube but abandoned after Wii was announced.

I always found the menus of Mario Kart to feel low budget compared to say Smash, even the menu music feels a bit meh.

Nintendo has a serious problem with UI overall, not only games but also apps. The 3DS became such a clusterfuck of different styles between apps and so that annoys me just to navigate between them.
