I own Mario Kart 8, and I still wonder how people enjoy this franchise. Sure, having a few races with a kid is fun, but being obsessed with the series? The fact that all the games in the series are basically the same makes it even more dramatic.

Nintendo choosing to have this as the first Switch game shown doesn't bode well. If this is the most exciting game they'll have at release I think it'll be easy to wait until next year before I buy it.

Yep -- and Nintendo never shows their hand in a first trailer. Mario Odyssey's full debut trailer didn't even show the capture mechanic, literally the main hook of the game. We didn't know we were building stuff with Ultrahand in TOTK until like a few months before release.

my bet is the new thing here will be team based races like Team Sonic Racing.

with the increased player count you could have 6 4player teams.
the wider tracks would also allow for more aggressive gameplay with weapons/items.

Going by this video I think there's quite a lot of things that makes it stand out from MK8 in terms of details and animations.


MK8 has sold close to 65 million(!) copies, I think it's a rather smart choice by Nintendo to lead with it.

My first reaction was that it looks almost exactly like MK8. It looks good, and I can tell that there are more details and the lighting is better than MK8, but it's not something that creates a strong impression. The video quality is not helping it either.

I'm sure they'll have a better trailer in April.

I do wonder what will be the new thing. I keep wishing for Mario Kart Diddy Kong Racing / Sonic Racing Transformed. As in we get to go on sea, air and on land. I'd love it.

it should be in beta stage yet, probably (and I hope) the final version will look better and different

Unfortunately, it’s not gonna be a technicality. It’s gonna be all about perception. if it’s not like a dramatic improvement that is clearly better in every imaginable way, people are just gonna dump on it.

The problem is that Mario kart 8 looks so fucking good, even to this day, that the problem Nintendo is gonna have I think is selling all of those Mario kart fans who may or may not care about a lot of of other Nintendo franchises. “Why do I need to buy a new Mario kart for $70 with this $400 system if Mario kart 8 already looks amazing and has 100 courses?” You know? like it’s not an unreasonable question. But if you’re playing devils advocate, that’s the big hurdle Nintendo‘s gonna have to contend with.

Like essentially every Switch installment was like the pinnacle and definitive version of every series, right? So the question is, how does Nintendo approach outdoing doing the Switch version of all of these franchisees which are bigger than ever because the switch was so fucking popular. I would not want those people’s jobs at Nintendo to figure out the answer to that question. I don’t know that “bigger and better” is necessarily gonna work this time, for every series.

Would make sense to have something in the pipeline given they’re pushing DK big with the expansion at Nintendo World. Wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve got a semi-big new game on the way and are planing a DK movie.

Mario kart? If Nintendo wants to sell switch 2s, that game will not be cross-gen, not if it’s a launch window title. Which I assume it is.
