Pokémon Sun & Moon |OT| Ultra Beasts and where to find them

I'm slowly realizing that since I bought Sun but always play videogames at night, I will scarcely see the sunshine of Alola. Profound sadness.

I also don't know what my mom does in this game. Is she rich? Does she have a sugar daddy? It's Kukui, isn't it??

I am trying very hard to act and feel normal these days and it comforts me to be back in a Nintendo thread with you. I joined NeoGAF for SmashGAF.

It's nice to be here with you.
In all seriousness, I'm always here for you, friend. :-)

I keep reading about Growlithe's in Route 2. Spend about an hour goofing around in those first two patches and have found nothing.

Is this thing like 0.01% encounter rate? Anybody got confirmation before i spend another hour here?

They're in the upper grass patches with the Cutiefly and stuff.

My team is just a revolving door of new catches so far, with Litten carrying the team and raising everyone's levels via EXP Share. But I'm just in the first city. Very early on.

In XY, I decided to raise my first starter, the Kanto starter, the gift Torchic, the Lucario they give you, and a Tyrunt. Much easier to figure out my campaign team there.

Not sure how my Sun team will shake out. No idea where each Pokemon is located!

Just change the system time. It's not ideal but...

I found mine in the patch right before the Pokemon Center.

I'm still early in (just got to the 2nd island), but really appreciating the changes they made to the story flow. It's still very much a Pokemon game, but it's refreshing that I don't know exactly where the game is going to go. I've been so accustomed to the 'beat 8 gyms, beat the elite 4, beat the token bad guy group' format for so long. And I don't think this game completely abandons that formula either (especially the evil group), but I'm going to the trials with excitement that it's different from what I'm used to doing in these games. I liked X+Y a lot as well, but going into Sun/Moon, I was concerned I was also starting to hit a lot of franchise fatigue (I wound up stopping ORAS a few hours in because I just didn't feel like going through the same beats again), but I am pleasantly surprised that Sun/Moon decided to shake up the formula just in time.

Not being able to throw a Poké Ball when multiple Pokémon are on the field is what holds back the SOS mechanic.

It prolongs otherwise simple captures and forces you to choose between two Pokémon you might want.

For example, I needed a Metapod and a Butterfree answered its call for help. While losing a Metapod is no tragedy, I still had to faint the Pokémon I started out for to obtain the one that followed.

I actually really love the SOS mechanic overall, but I admit that the necessity of a status condition to negate it isn't enough. Simply being able to throw a Poké Ball whenever you want would rectify the issues players are having with the system.

It would also be exciting to catch two Pokémon in the same battle.

Come back after you beat the fire trial.

Go up a couple patches of grass
It matters

The patch right outside the Pokemon Center with the berry tree is the only patch of grass I've seen. It's right across from the cave that has the first trial.

They're in the upper grass patches with the Cutiefly and stuff.

I found mine in the patch right before the Pokemon Center.

Thanks, Poke-GAF! Got one! Much appreciated :)

About an hour and 20 min in. Game is great, love the presentation. My first criticism though is that the intro is way too long. They spend way more time explaining story and game mechanics than the other games, I guess it's good introduction for new players but it is kinda annoying

Got my Hasty Ash Greninja ready, plus my 10% Zygarde.

I was going for Alola only but right now I don't even care, both are getting a spot inside my team.

Lol yes. Caught an Abra at the first turn of the encounter with a Nest Ball

This really brought me back to Red/Blue. You find Abra so early that you have no way to prevent its escape via Teleport. You have no choice but to throw a Poké Ball at it and catch it on the first turn. I remember doing that in Cerulean City because Abra was cool and rare and awesome back then.

It took me four Abras to catch one in Moon. Pretty good if you ask me.

Aw man didn't think to save before things kicked in at the start and not sure which starter to go with for now.

How's everyone's experience with Rowlet so far?

I've been noticing that sometimes at the start of turns it'll say something like "Growlithe is tired" or "Trumbeak is thinking about beans". Does this have to do with the Refresh thing? I only started seeing it after refreshing my Pokemon more regularly, but I don't get why it would say that they're thinking about beans right after I fed them. Also, it's saying stuff like "They're worried that they won't be able to fight well". Is it bad to see these messages?

I mean 'call for help' doesn't even waste a move! They get to attack and call another pokemon to ruin my chances of throwing a pokeball.

What were they thinking.

This is just flavor, supposed to signify your connection with the Pokemon because they have so much affection for you. Doesn't actually mean anything.

So I heard the owl starter is awful. If I'm just a casual player going through the story, will this matter? If I choose the cat and keep them at the second evolution (I hate humanoid types, sorry) will that also gimp me?

Rowlett's line is great, so not sure where you heard that from. Keeping anything from evolving will always be gimping yourself, but that's not to say you can't finish the game with it.

Ultimately it doesn't matter at all for the story, you can clear it with just about anything you want.

Noticed you didn't mention Popplio anywhere in your post.

Popplio is the best.
