Forget about Cuphead, when the hell is Below coming out?

Indie devs, particularly successful ones like Capy tend to move at their own pace and release when they think their product is good and ready.

Some of the chagrin in here about MS featuring these games in their conferences is depressing and only going to encourage publishers to not feature interesting games.

Below is my most anticipated game. :*(

I love it. I screengrabbed and sent to the team.

Touche. :)

Hey all,

Quick notes:

• Yes, we're still in full production on the game. We've never stopped. It isn't cancelled.
• When we delayed again, we decided to do what we felt was the right thing, and stop promoting the game until we have a concrete release date that we can share. No more expected dates, just one release date.
• Our game collab with Cartoon Network has no impact on Below. We've always had 2 full teams at Capy. There's 24 people here, split between the two.

Despite all this, we totally understand that people have lost confidence in the game coming out. It's been a long-ass time and a bunch of delays. But from our POV, we gotta do what we gotta do to make sure we're making something we're happy with. And trust me, no one wants to get this game out more than us :)

We hope that when we announce the release date, or when it releases, or at some other point after that, you'll give the game a shot.

If anyone has questions, I'm around.

This is great news! Totally ok to decline to answer this, but does Capy have plans to attend E3?

And if it ends to be a good game i am fine with it.
Same happened to Inside really. Not much coming out. People not believe it would ever release etc. And at the end we got one of the best games of the last years.

Superbrothers was cool, but STF was truly amazing, both in concept and realization. I did lose confidence but I'll surely buy Below if it comes out. Great reply btw.

Yep. I'm happy to wait that Inside trailer being shown at last years E3 with a surprise release date two weeks later was amazing.

Hope one of these games does the same thing.

Hoping to see Cuphead, Below, Ashen, and Tacoma and hopefully get 2017 release dates
I expect ms to announce release dates for all these games at e3 and they will all probably launch within 3 months. Probably all part of some promotion like summer of arcade or something.

Will it release on Xbone and Steam on the same time and will the versions be equal in terms of content?

Geez. I remember playing this at PAX East 2015 and talking to one of the members of the team (off-camera). I thought the game was in good shape then. Can't wait to finally be able to play it at home.

I hope Below hits this year. There's no reason an indie game should take that long no matter how many people you have on the roster to create it.

Bigger games have been made by less people....

Two hype xbox games and nowhere to be found lol. But i do have a feeling cuphead comes this summer with a date at e3. As for below, who knows lmao.

I'm so glad I had the chance to play some of Below (which I def enjoyed). I'm bummed to read about the indefinite delay. Which I'm hoping is more a "we don't have dates and we're busy with a more direct contract" than "politely cancelled." It was pretty far along when I played it, so I'd guess is more the former.

Edit: Oh HELL yeah. Another case of Polygon being bad at communicating what they're told:

Good to hear. Hope we see and hear more soon (e3?)

Forget Cuphead? That's one of the only reasons why I keep my XBO... that and Sea of Thieves, and I gave up on Rare's darling. I'll need to look for Below on Youtube, I don't recall ever seeing it (Ashen either).

Edit: Nice!

They were both announced like 4 years ago, and have been in limbo for some time.\

Both games have incredibly strong art design, amazing music, but the gameplay looks somewhat questionable.

pretty amazing that Rime is going to release before either of them

edit: lol a Dev responded here and somehow Polygon couldn't get this simple information

Yes it will be the same day, yes it will be the identical in content.

I stopped caring about Capy a long time ago. Super Time Force took forever and was ultimately disappointing.

Coming into a thread about a Capy game to tell everyone you don't care about Capy sure makes it seem like you actually care about Capy WINKY FACE EMOJIIIIIIII

I honestly don't know how you can run a business if for years you are working on something like this with no end in sight. If MS is funding this venture, I honestly feel like we need to give them some props.

Can't wait for Cuphead, Below and Ashen.

Hope they all make it this year.
If all three of those (plus Tacoma) make 2017, man...

I think MS was originally publishing Below, but when they announced the ID@Xbox program, the developer asked if they could self-publish instead and MS let them. Vaguely remember one of them talking about that in an interview.

Yea that's right they are self publishing. If that's the case then they can take as long as they like. It's probably for the best they stop promoting the game to finish it but I was getting sick of having the game be on my "most anticipated list" since like year one of the console. At this point if it's just average I'd probably be happy after the hype it's built up in my mind.

How did you guys balanced the development of Don't Starve Shipwrecked and STFU ports among the two teams?

I always thought these projects negatively impacted the Below timeline, but that would be understandable reality.

Wish Cuphead Gaf dev that posts every once in a blue moon could clear this up. I think his name is Teeth or something.

Also, it's funny that people are dogging on below and cuphead and there is not much complaint about another game that was announced at the same time,

tumblr_nm758t7EQS1tsq1p3o1_540.gif

I can't for the life of me remember the name of this game. Looked great though.

Microsoft isn't funding. Even when we were working with 1st Party, we were still funding it ourselves. Capy's been in business almost 12 years, so we're doing fine even when self-funded games take longer than expected. Microsoft does deserve props, however, for just supporting our decision to not release the game until we're ready.

It's not too hard to balance. Shipwrecked was one of our teams, minus the awesome programmer who did the Super Time Force ports. Below was the other team. Having multiple projects definitely has its ups and downs, and sometimes stretches some of our crew a little thin... but it also means we get to make different things all the time, which is crucial for a studio like ours.

I used to care. This thread is a reminder of that ;)
Capy announced the game way too soon.
Anyway, I don't follow game dev closely anymore in general until a serious release date is announced.
Good luck!

Keep doing what you're doing! I do hope we get to see Below in its final form someday (soon) though :-)

Since we are talking about forgotten, promising kick-starter, any news on "Little Devil Inside"? Was it not supposed to come out last year?

It is absolutely true, we did announce it way too early. That's definitely a mistake we won't repeat.

This does my heart good to hear. I don't mind waiting for games; I just like being in the loop. Thank you!

I thought Cuphead was already out and it was one of those things I'd eventually discover once it was on sale. Guess I'm out of the loop. >.>

This post is relieving to read. After I saw the news on the first page of the thread, I was feeling pretty disappointed considering I've been waiting for this game for years.

I think he's right. It was always meant to be Boss Rush but they received overwhelming feedback about "where's the platforming?" So they've delayed to add it.

That's so disappointing. There are a lot of action platformers out there where the boss fights are by far the most interesting parts of the game and the platforming is kinda boring (I'm thinking of Mega Man Zero, Shovel Knight, etc). I think I would have liked a game that cut out the platforming and was just intense boss fights.
