Destiny looks pretty darn good...actually better than i thought it would. Couple of questions Nick....

1. Is there a photo mode implemented?

2. How's the performance at 8k, which GPU's are you using?

3. Do you recommend pre-ordering the game based on what you experienced so far?

Few Mafia III pic's @ native 8k this time. Got a hell of a deal on Dell's 8k monitor, but my God this thing is tiny compared to my 75" Z9D, also it's a small heater lol.

Btw, one thing i've noticed that when playing @ native 8k vs DSR 8k is that banding in this particular game is almost gone(still visible but not even nearly as bad), and everyone who played this game knows that skybox gets a lot banding at night. Wonder if it's the monitor that's preventing that or something else?

There's no photo mode, not in the Beta anyway but whether they put one in the final game is anyone's guess. I've only touched the solo mode and it doesn't really feel any different from Destiny 1 so far. That's not necessarily a bad thing but I'll try the PvP tomorrow and see how that differs. I'd hold off from pre-ordering for now if you've played Destiny 1 and are expecting some major changes because it doesn't look like there's a whole lot different. Looks amazing though..

Hah, don't even ask. I'm on one 980Ti and just for the sake of screenshots I turned it up to 8k but it's not playable for me by any means. The in-game FPS counter was giving me an average of 20-30 fps at 8k so performance looks great if you're aiming for 4k on a single top of the line card..you should have no problem hitting 30-40 fps with your SLI set up @8k.

Sounds like Bungie optimized the hell out of the engine for PC ver. Kudos to them! And no, i never played the original one....seen a few videos, but that's about it! But those are some great FPS numbers considering it's still a beta. Thanks for all the info, i really appreciate it:)

Hmmmm. Those models kinda look like shit up close. Doesn't really seem all that impressive so far, really. Maybe it looks better in motion.

Those are the just the bots that aren't a part of the actual game so the details aren't stellar on those guys. I've cropped into that shot so I've made it look worse than it actually appears.

Well I was blown away with all the incredible effects and lighting but then maybe I'm easily impressed. Haven't had a chance to play Quantum Break or Doom yet so I don't know if this looks as good as those games but compared to the tech in Gears of War 4 I think this is right up there.

This guy looks pretty good.

Always funny to read "This game is really well optimized!" coming from people who have no clue how game engines and GPUs even work. :)

*Every* game studio (well, except Bethesda, as they don't know what they're doing) optimizes the crap out of their games, and every game has a 'budget', related to the target FPS they want to achieve, and within that budget they have to compromise either this or that, but to compromise they have to. The trick is to make it look like they didn't compromise at all yet still make the target fps, so 'stay in budget'.

The game looks in these shots like a 'we have to meet the 60fps mark' game tho. Nothing wrong with that (it's a requirement for them, so no compromises in that area!), but not comparable with a 30fps single player game. They compromised clearly in geometry and material shader usage. They could have hidden that with more grain perhaps.

Well, not everyone is such an expert like you when it comes to understanding how game engines work:)

But what i do understand is that not every game studio optimizes their engines as you said so yourself. And in this instance i'm just gonna mention Mafia III's developer "Hangar 13" This game in no way warrants 3 1080 Ti's to run 60FPS @4k! When a game like GTA V that looks way better can be run with same setup at 8k and almost 60FPS. And all assets/shaders I've seen from Destiny 2 look way better than Mafia III. Yes, they are completely different games, but just the sheer amount of action and particle effects that are displayed on screen when playing Destiny 2 made me say that what i said earlier.

I know nothing about optimization but it seems to me some developers are better at it than others and that's evident in not only PC exclusives but some of the console to PC ports and vice versa. I don't know if there is such a thing as "lazy developers" either which get's thrown around a lot because as you've pointed out compromises have to made and whether or not those please everyone at the end of the day is always going to be controversial. Then there are those that just have to get it out of the door because of *cough* EA *cough*

There is a film grain option in the game menu but I turned it off so I have no idea if it looks better with or without it. Worth checking out though!

Many (not all) people talking about bad optimization could well cause developers to disable higher quality settings, to prevent everyone setting the sliders aaaall the way to the right and then crying about lazy developers poorly optimizing their shit. But I don't know. I just play the games.

If anyone is interested, I found out that you can enable the developer dof parameters in both Wolfenstein games by MachineGames. The depth of field effect in The Old Blood looks miles better than the one in The New Order, and warrants messing about with it for screenshots. You can read more on it at the bottom of this page on the DET forum.

EDIT: Oh yeah, more shots from the Wolfenstein: The Old Blood over here.

I think some look like they don't know what they're doing (except Bethesda, they really don't know what they're doing) because they picked the options poorly (e.g. you can have it either cheap, fast or reliable, pick 2) and get burned down by it, which is a shame, but alas, that's the world we live in ;) Don't think EA always goes for the money grab tho, they have some fine developers on the payroll, but there's not always enough time / people to do everything.

Destiny 2 looks great tho, and maybe not 100% great in still images, but in motion it looks great. We're a weird bunch who try to look at still images of games and sadly not with enough to make a difference (yet) ;).

It can add more detail and light scattering. Almost done with downloading the open beta, hopefully cheat engine can attach so I can poke around abit ;)

(edit) Cheat engine can be attached and used. Nice :) It hotsamples too btw. Also nice.

It really does look better in motion, screens don't do it justice. I took a bunch of shots of the area in the final stage of the single player demo but haven't stitched them together yet but it's enough to make your jaw drop. Also, credit to Bungie for including a lot of in-game options. If you get the CT working can I have please..thanks :)

If the game looks good in motion, and your screenshots only make the game look worse, or don't do the game justice, why screenshot it to begin with? There are many reasons to take screenshots of games, of course, and none is inherently better than the other, but I'd like to think that it's a nice goal to aim for shots that make a game shine, or show it in a new light. (Freaking hard to pull off, though.)

Because..if that was the case then we probably wouldn't be taking screenshots of half of the games out there. Most of us try to present them in a way that is appealing..reshade or otherwise (which can make it look better or worse) or using our own skills whatever they may be but if we're talking about taking shots that are an accurate representation of how a game looks, we're kind of cheating a bit here too. Anyhow that's a topic for another discussion. In my case saying this game looks better in motion is simply implying there's stuff going on screen that can't be captured in a single shot. It's a fps action game after all so there's lot of effects and mayhem and whatnot. Not everyone is going to dismiss a game based on shots that don't quite capture it in all it's glory as long as they don't look terrible. To be honest the shots I've posted took me a whole freaking day to edit so they'd be presentable without the hud, logo and gun..and that was bloody tiring but all to no avail it seems.

Well, that'll be hard, as I can't attach a debugger, sadly :( I found some cameras but to find what writes to it (and with that figure out what the real camera is) I need to attach the CE debugger, but that doesn't work :( So no camera tools for this game, I'm afraid.

It does look OK, but I'm still at the first fire stairs of the demo ;)

u wot m8?

What is there to edit that takes a whole day?

Lol. I mean taking into account the amount of shots I took and then either stitched and/or cropped HUD and blended logo with the background. Takes time when you're an amateur at these sort of things..whole day meaning about 7-8 hours when I should have been at work :p

Ah, that's ok...thanks for trying. Maybe I'll take a few more shots with the FOV a bit higher. The in-game slider is great, goes from 55-100.

What kind of framerate are you hitting at that res? Also, did you top out the render resolution in-game? I imagine setting that to 200% would get you the same results as DSR - unless you were intent on taking screenshots of that size.

I feel lucky to get fairly solid low-50s to 60 FPS with high / medium settings at 3440x1440 (92% render resolution) on a GTX 980. Your game looks gorgeous - almost to the point I might feel inclined to upgrade my GPU instead of waiting another year - if I do commit to playing the game on PC over other versions of the game.

Hmmmm. Fair enough.

Is there really no way to toggle the HUD? I played through the beta a bit but never really looked for that option.

The option is there but it's not implemented in the beta. There's both a HUD opacity and an actual turn HUD off option under 'Accessibility' so for the final build it'll be working, as it was for Destiny 1.

I completely forgot I implemented supersampling in the camera tools. I went back to the game after a long period of time, and couldn't figure out how to holster the weapon when playing with kb/m, pressed random keys on the keyboard and it suddenly showed 'supersampling enabled' ... what? Oh..

Of course I had already taken some shots, among them this one. Next time more detail.. :)

Okay I'm confused. Afterburner and FRAPS didn't seem to work for me when running Destiny 2 at 190% Render scale (game menu option) in full screen mode when my resolution was set to 5160x2160. They were just capturing a black screen. However switching to windowed full screen solved the problem and I was able to take screenshots of the game. My questtion is why is the screenshot only 3440x1440 when in-game it's still showing as 5160x2160? My fps got bumped up significantly so I guess that means it was only running at 3440x1440p.. :-s

Edit: ^ Damn cool shot btw. How did you get the suit?
