Based on just what I get in my messages on console sometimes, I don't get why some of y'all struggle to believe this. There is a pocket of younger, unloved, ignored, malcontent dweebs that lash out when their fantasy bubble bursts.
Maybe.
When I was younger and the Internet was really just starting to become a household thing we would go round to my friends house (the only one of us who had Internet at home) and we'd spend all Friday night crowded round his PC giving people grief on Yahoo Chat.
You're talking about a group of 15 year old lads in Europe getting drunk on cheap cider and just saying the most horrendous shit to people.
I am NOT proud of it now and we were completely out of order sometimes but that's what we did.
We didn't mean the stuff we said. We just thought it was hilarious that we could say whatever the hell we wanted, free of consequences, and sometimes we'd get big reactions which would have us laughing our asses off.
It wasn't driven by hate or anger or anything like that. We were just really shitty kids and we egged each other on and acted like little cunts and then laughed at the responses we got.
Sorry.
The idea that these days some kids huddled round a laptop or smart phone can have influence of the entire gaming industry is ridiculous.
Causing drama and fallout and being the source of articles on mainstream outlets would have been absolute solid comedy gold for us back then.
"Holy shit! Your tweet that Star Wars should be for whites only is on the front page of Polygon. Hahahahahaha!"
So the problem is not that the messages do or do not exist.
The problem is that the messages are basically without context.
Who sent them and why?
It's like if back in the day some kids had a soundboard and were phoning up old ladies and playing clips from Gremlins or Robocop.
You'd want to find the little cunts who are doing it and give them a clip round the ear. The end.
What you wouldn't do is go to the national or even local news networks and be like "reeeeeee! Gremlins fans are so horrible and toxic and people who watch movies are just the worst!"
