Alanah Pearce Won't Stream The Last of Us 2 Due To Harassment

Why is it when gamers harrass gaming personalities on social media it's framed as an evil act?

But when SJWs harass people with the wrong opinion it's somehow justified?

I'm not saying the attacks on Alanah Pearce aren't disgusting, but I'm finding it hard to have any sympathy for her. It's the height of hypocrisy to excuse one situation and cheer on the other.

You become a public figure on social media, you deal with the negative attention it brings. It sucks but that's life.
But it's the way how you communicate this. Not focusing on the topic at hand, just asking/hoping for someone to get raped or clubbed to death is way too far...

People need to stop letting these kind of comments get to them. The only people who say things like this have to little punk brat kids, or losers who are just really immature.

Going on social media and saying "i'm not gonna do this anymore because of these comments" is not being brave, it's letting those little shits win.

It was a lame attempt at a joke.

But I think some of these guys are actually taking their hobby way too seriously and flip out even for the smallest thing.
True, but it's one thing to.flip out and another thing to tell another human being to get raped and beaten to death, especially to a woman.

I wish she didn't have to tweet that because it gives gamers a bad look, especially considering that she doesn't know whether those words came from actual gamers.

Both are cases of online harassment.

Both are deplorable.

Only difference is one side gets virtual hugs from white knights and allies, while the other gets ostracized from social media and oftentimes gets fired from their real life employment. At times the target can't cope with the abuse anymore and takes their own life.

Do we need to be reminded of what Zoe Quinn did to Alec Holowka?

I hope the best for her.

Online harassment is a real thing. Not talking about the petty stuff and insults you see here in gaf once in a while. When all you are seeing is harassment messages for a period of time, it's time to step away and let it die down.

I'm sure there are a lot more people who are gonna stream the game so it's not like people are out of options.

It is all fake.

Absolutely hilarious that people think these are just "a couple of mean comments".

Great way to think. Suddenly theats and bullying have no power and dont make people quit jobs, move schools, move home, kill themselves.

Words are powerful. They may be empty threats on the internet, but they still hit you real. And it really makes you wonder who around you are capable of that kind of thought, and potentially action.

Id put money on these couple of comments being just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the hate she recieves.

Theres a video where she talks about having to negatively review a game that everyones looking forward to, and how thats basicslly setting you up for hate mail. That game being mass effect andromeda. (The subjects about pandering to publishers and giving fake scores, but that quite often people pander to their readers because its an easier life, apparently.)

I dont think any of the people who claim that these people should just be ignored and that their words shouldnt hurt, could sustain years of it directed at them personally.

I dont blame anyone for dodging that minefield.

Based on just what I get in my messages on console sometimes, I don't get why some of y'all struggle to believe this. There is a pocket of younger, unloved, ignored, malcontent dweebs that lash out when their fantasy bubble bursts.

I'm starting to see this new faux outrage trend on social media.

I'm not saying this looks fake as shit and made to get attention but it does. Even if it isn't as others have pointed out there is a block button 🤷‍♀️ on top of just letting people that donate post shit. Odd thread.

Yeah and you can block em or share the messages with your friends for a quick laugh.

Holy shit, that's insane.....

The question would be: Did she do this solely for attention?

True enough. Report, report, report.

Idk, she has a history of bad shit happening to her. It could all be true for all we know. Of a single tweet with a questionable screenshot, mob mentality sure did run with this story. Well it was good enough for a guy to make a thread over it anyway. Fucking misogynist gamers! grrrr!

Checked out her stuff after the 'ex-IGN employee tells truth about 10/10 reviews' video, and she's got some good stuff, podcast series with Troy Baker, Mike Bithell, and the other guy is quite good. She does seem to have very much bought into the "representation is super important" fallacy but other than that she doesn't seem too SJW-ish (no more than can be expected from virtually any major industry commentator), and having looked at a couple of her 'reading mean comments' videos she seems to take most "hate-mail" in stride, so it seems a bit strange that she's suddenly so effected by it.

Don't get me wrong those DM's are disgusting and people are trash, and I feel sorry for anyone who's job requires a public presense and thus has to engage in social media (cause social media is the worst), but idk, I feel like all these public personalities kind of need to just deal with the hate...there is literally nothing that can be done about it and it won't ever go away, so altering your behavior because of the hate seems like it's just throwing in the towel and giving them what they want.

While I understand her frustration, can't she just not look at the chat?

I play Rainbow Six Siege and I've completely turned off chat on the other team cause I was sick of the toxicity. It was so refreshing not having to worry about it anymore.

Oh great.

This is going to be another "if you don't like Consumer Product X then you are a bad person" scenario isn't it?
Just look at all the hate so and so got for wanting to just stream the game.

Amazing how the entertainment industry has really grabbed onto this tactic.

Look, those messages are bad but the fact of the matter is we do not know exactly who sent them or even exactly why they were sent.
Plus you can't really stop anyone from setting up a throwaway account and sending stuff like that.

Yet, situations like this are continually used to smear others or to grab attention.
I don't doubt that she legit received those messages but unless you know who sent them and why the rest of the discussion is a waste of time.

she wont be streaming TLOU2 due to using it to get exposure.

Nothing any idiot says or does would stop her streaming it if she wanted too,

Yep. She's actually gonna get more publicity by saying she won't play the game, rather then actually playing the game.

Maybe.

When I was younger and the Internet was really just starting to become a household thing we would go round to my friends house (the only one of us who had Internet at home) and we'd spend all Friday night crowded round his PC giving people grief on Yahoo Chat.

You're talking about a group of 15 year old lads in Europe getting drunk on cheap cider and just saying the most horrendous shit to people.
I am NOT proud of it now and we were completely out of order sometimes but that's what we did.
We didn't mean the stuff we said. We just thought it was hilarious that we could say whatever the hell we wanted, free of consequences, and sometimes we'd get big reactions which would have us laughing our asses off.
It wasn't driven by hate or anger or anything like that. We were just really shitty kids and we egged each other on and acted like little cunts and then laughed at the responses we got.

Sorry.

The idea that these days some kids huddled round a laptop or smart phone can have influence of the entire gaming industry is ridiculous.
Causing drama and fallout and being the source of articles on mainstream outlets would have been absolute solid comedy gold for us back then.
"Holy shit! Your tweet that Star Wars should be for whites only is on the front page of Polygon. Hahahahahaha!"

So the problem is not that the messages do or do not exist.
The problem is that the messages are basically without context.
Who sent them and why?

It's like if back in the day some kids had a soundboard and were phoning up old ladies and playing clips from Gremlins or Robocop.
You'd want to find the little cunts who are doing it and give them a clip round the ear. The end.
What you wouldn't do is go to the national or even local news networks and be like "reeeeeee! Gremlins fans are so horrible and toxic and people who watch movies are just the worst!"

Well, fuck. I also hate the sjw agenda in this game, but come on. Death threats over a fucking video game?

Utterly pathetic. Bet these 14 yo basement kiddies feel strong and masculine by giving death threats over the internet.

I think its most likely an attention grab so then she streams it and get even more views. But the harassment I don't doubt at all. Never underestimate the courage of the keyboard warriors.

At this point it is known that if you want to seek attention (and make money) on social media, you have nerds harassing you. So if you really don't like it, do something else.

Its a shame how toxic, politicized and polarizing pretty much everything from games to tv/movies to sports etc has gotten. It makes the days of good ol console fanboyism seem quaint in comparison.

looks like she is very happy about the following though:

In some ways it is definitely a marketing strategy.
Even if the messages are legit and she is legit upset by them, it is what it is.
She is leveraging them into more subscribers and followers that leads to more donations.

We've seen it so many times before.

It's less "make a donation because my content is good" and more "make a donation because it will piss off the right people".
Very strange.

I'd say I'm even guilty of it myself.
If there was a game coming out that ResetEra and Polygon etc are crying about then for sure I would consider buying that game.
I might not follow through on the purchase in the end but that feeling of "I want to support them because people I dislike are attacking them" is there to some extent.

If you see "OMG I am getting so much hate" followed by "OMG I am getting so many new subscribers" then something is up.

These are exactly the kind of threads that slowly turned Neogaf into a leftist SJW hellhole and eventually created REEEEEE.

We gotta protect the "victims" from the evil toxic gamers on the interwebz. Then before you know it, the theme of victimhood is all anyone can talk about instead of games on a GAMING FORUM. In time, a few SJW leftists manage to become moderators and begin baning peopple for "victim blaming" and absolutely any kind of wrong-think. As it progresses all SOME people care about anymore is virtue signalling and showing others how woke they are. It gets to the point where the literally can't stand being around normal people anymore and split off to form their own forum.

If discussing the "victims of toxic gamers" is so interesting to you, there are other places to do it where you won't have to deal with the nuisance of people having different opinions.
well who died and made you a mod?

but i get it. its OK to discuss things, as long as its your opinion that is being echoed?

some of you guys really need to look in the mirror when going after SJW's.. you are using all the same stupid tactics, just with the reverse settings :P

"if your left of center your a communist scumbag"
"if your right of center your a Nazi"

Fucking toxic ass nerds.

Why does everything have to be so political nowadays? Shit is so annoying.

I don't know who this persona is but I'd wager this was only done as a publicity stunt and ultimately she's still going to play the game. If not, this tweet will make her more money than playing the game itself.

And don't worry, she won't spend it on a therapist.

Jesus, a lot of incels in this thread just casually dismissing a woman getting threats. It's no wonder why many of you are in your 30s and 40s and still a virgin.
