You may be over the MCU but don't mistake those feelings for everyone on the planet. The MCU is very much going to be very popular moving forward, the 2 year hiatus is making people even more keen. The people hating on the MCU are in the minority, the lovers are the majority. Just look at this videos like/dislike ratio.

Eh. We will see. They're going to have their work cut out for them. I'm sure they'll make money. Disney manufactures hype via they're marketing/media properties. But I believe they will miss Evans, Boseman, Hemsworth, and Downey.

Hemsworth is still Thor. You remember there were two simultaneously in the comics (Odinson and Foster Thor).

Ah, I haven't been following it all that closely. I saw where Natalie Portman was going to be Thor and figured that was going to be a full time change.

It's not even a full time change in the comics since she died. The whole story is how she has cancer, but every time she turns into Thor it wipes out all of the progress of the cancer treatment. So she could not be Thor and live, or be Thor and die of cancer (and then she became a Valkyrie in the comics).

It happened at the IMAX cinema I went to in the Philippines on opening night. It was an absolutely incredible scene and one of the best moments in theatrical history for me.
For Infinity War, everyone clapped and shouted when Thor appeared on the battle field.

These are amazing experiences for massive fans that can't be replicated at home.
 
I just watched this, you know "I'll get around to it" as I'm not hyped due to all the (Understandable) delays. I just came away with the feeling that the whole thing was put together to keep investors interested. Meh, logos and dates.

Thor has been recast. Cap is recast. Iron Man as well. It's an open question if audiences will accept these new actors in roles that were perfectly cast originally. I think people will struggle. The original actors just fit those roles to a T and have become synonymous with the characters themselves. I'm sure some might accuse me of not giving the new characters a chance. But if they decided to make a sequel to Blade with Anthony Hopkins instead of Wesley Snipes as the lead, I think people would be right to wonder how audiences would receive that.

They recast comic characters in comics all the time and they are quite often successful... I wouldn't be so sure.

Also, people can only dig up the corpses of the OG 5 Avengers so many times. Eventually the title moves down and the persona is passed on. It's a normal cycle.

Same issue Star Wars had (that it seems to have found its' way now) - moving past the OG 4.

I would be careful comparing casual movie goers to comic book fans. Comic book fans are generally far more invested. I'm not saying it's a foregone conclusion that these recasts are going to fail. But it's open question, where as in the past it was a foregone conclusion.

I disagree. Both Thor and Iron Man had their own segments in the old Marvel animated series. Both have their own chapters in the Marvel Super Hero Squad before the MCU was a thing. Iron Man had his own video game on the GBA. And both were characters in the hugely Infinity Gauntlet comic book back in the 90s. They are founding members of the Avengers in the comic book. They're not Spider-Man, X-Men or Hulk but they're certainly not Shang Chi or Captain Marvel.

Not to mention Marvel spent multiple movies building them into well known entities, regardless of their status in the comics. We will see if these new actors can carry their own movies. Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man was box office. Sticking the Iron Man name on some other actor no one really associates with the character isn't guaranteed to carry the same weight. Same goes for making Falcon into Captain America.

Obviously, time will tell. But I fairly confident that Marvel's best days are behind it.

No, both were C-tier characters in the comics before the mid-2000s.

When Walt Simonsen took over Thor in the 80s, Marvel thought so little of the character that he could do anything to him including permanently killing him.

For most of the 90s and into the 2000s, X-Men and Spider-Man were Marvel's top franchises. The whole reason Marvel Studios made Iron Man their first movie was because the rights were available (and dirt cheap) after Tom Cruise's 1998 version fell through, and because Ike Perlmutter felt an Iron Man movie would sell toys. It wasn't because Iron Man was one of their top characters. In 2008 Spider-Man and X-Men were still the marquee Marvel franchises. Avengers didn't become a big deal until 2012 and the movie release. Now Avengers is bigger than X-Men.

The movies breaking billions at the box office are largely composed of casuals like myself. I read manga, but never read a single comic book in my life. It's not my thing. But the MCU is very much my thing. The best movie-going experience for the buck, at the moment. I don't expect recasts to impact viewership much at all, so long as the recasts make sense. Swapping out Brie Larson, without the role of Captain Marvel being handed off, would be a poor casting decision. Having someone else take the mantle of Ironman, or Captain America (which has already happened), should be totally fine. One died, and the other passed the shield.

To put it in perspective, the toxic comic book fandom complained bitterly about Brie Larson, and Captain Marvel. However, the casual fandom powered that film to box office heights. With Coogler handling BP2, I think we can expect that the transition can be handled well, to see that make some good money too.

What will impact box office appeal more than anything casting or story related is COVID. That's going to continue to impact box office revenue globally, and well into 2022 at the rate we're going. So I don't expect any billion dollar bangers in Phase 4, and it doesn't have to do with the lack of appeal for the new stories. I just don't think people are in a big hurry to crowd into stale air to watch a movie anymore. Streaming movies has been perfectly fine for the past year. I see no reason personally to ever watch a movie in the theater again. Not until we're free and clear, which we are most certainly not right now. I won't go back until I can enjoy my popcorn and big gulp mask-free.

Well I knew nothing of Dr Strange or Guardians of the Galaxy before the movies and I would now rank them in the A tier.

I'm a lot more excited for the upcoming Dr Strange movie than I am Thor and I may be in the minority but I believe the Guardians movies are what the new Star Wars movies should have been. Crazy looking worlds, massive alien varieties and tons of action.

Not the dribble we see today that stopped expanding the universe after VI.

Back then A-list were things like X-Men and Spider-Man.
B-list were Hulk, Fantastic Four, and even Daredevil.

They got games because the licenses were cheap. There were still more X-Men or Spider-Man games by far though.

Hell the Avengers characters were so low on the totem pole in the late 90s that Marvel killed them off and let ROB FUCKING LIEFELD reboot them in a terrible attempt to make them "cool".

Hulk cannot be B-tier when he was in so many media. He's probably more well-known that the X-Men in popular culture. He may not have sold as many comic books but every one knows who The Hulk is.

Why did the other characters get their own games, if it was just the cost of the license?

Just do a Secret Wars movie. Avengers, X-Men, FF, Spidey, Doom, Doc Ock, Galactus, Wrecking Crew. Give it a gargantuan budget, take 10 years to make it, I will wait.

But which Secret Wars? The shit one from the 80s that was just done as a toy tie-in, or Hickmam's modern one that was used to wipe out the Ultimate universe?

All I know was the one from the 80s that I read as a kid and - while true that it was a toy tie-in, they really had nothing to do w the toys other than sharing that name and some of the figures that they were pushing, for the most part. Anyway yes that is what I would love to see! Shit to you, gold to me!

I can see the next big build up heading towards the inversions that Hickman did and throwing in Secret Wars as the finale. Would be pretty hype if they did that.

Before 2008s iron man Wolverine and spiderman were marvels most popular characters and x men #1 from 1990 is and will forever be marvels best selling comic
Xmen and spiderman had numerous games, toys, cartoons, by comparison
Iron man was that drunk avenger
Thor was that one that said verily
Ant man was the one that beat his wife
Captain America was the only one that stood alone before the mcu
They might have had there own books but they weren't big sellers where as spiderman and xmen both had numerous big sellers
 
I'm digging the next batch of films. They look pretty great. Bits funny how the Eternals marketing focuses on the person who isn't the star though. That being said the black knight will eventually be something.

The Marvel's sounds stupid though as the characters suck...
