Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Nintendo Direct

Also don't ask me how I know but apparently one of the new mechanics in the game is that Samus is able to ride a bike, it's used to traverse a massive desert area.

No idea how it'll work or look but yeah... Make of that what you will.

I seriously don't understand the mindset of some of the Nintendo haters on this forum.
I own a Switch. I enjoy Nintendo because they offer games that no other platform consistently develop. But I don't get the hype for a Metroid Prime game in 2024 that looks like a PS3 game and will be nowhere near as well put together as other games in its genre. And it annoys me that it will probably review better than any other linear FPS action shooter the past decade, just because of nostalgia for the franchise

If this game wasnt called Metroid Prime 4 and released on the PS5/Xbox Series, it may not even break 80 on metacritic

It's Prime 4! Go play Returnal if you're looking for similar vibes and completely different gameplay.

This looked excellent for what it is. Prime 4!
No it was Prime 1 with a 4 in the title. And was basically verbatim gameplay taken from the old games. That's how it felt.

Okay? Enjoy CGI trailers for games releasing in 2031 then.

Weren't you the one creaming yourself about the new Dragon Age ushering BioWare back to the throne of RPG games?

It looks great, graphically a lot like Doom 2016, definitely better than the Prime Remaster (traversable foliage/trees especially which were still blockier than I'd have liked there) but will it unlike Doom run 60fps on Switch (1)? Funny to see the same concern trolls in every N thread since 2015 too 🤷‍♂️

The criticism against it is that it's apparently too obviously a Prime game (they wanted COD) and it looks like one of the most praised for visuals Switch games, 2023's Prime Remastered (which is really a full 1:1 remake just like Demon's Souls on PS5, Nintendo was simply modest naming it). Lame!

I was about to post that this looks way too good to be a switch title, what you say makes sense brother, just the image quality alone is beyond of what the switch is capable of (judging by the video).

This looks identical to MP1 remastered for Switch...

I'd really hope this isn't Switch 2 footage and I definitely don't think it is, because that should be far more impressive. It's better for all of us if this is just Switch footage

I'm all for more Prime, more Metroid. But I get what the fellow is saying - the trailer is just off for various reasons at least to me. Doesn't mean I'm not interested in it still. However I'd agree, I don't want "fresh and new gameplay", I want Metroid.

lmao I don't think you want to use that kind of argument for MP4... it was literally a jpeg for years
And it was weird to get excited about that, too. I'm talking about this trailer.

Once the news broke about the development, it was a bit obvious why the first trailer was a big nothing.

How more unambitious can Nintendo get? The last time I was excited by something from Nintendo was with Zelda BotW. Too many small games focused on casual and younger players nowadays, and now this lazy Metroid...

I'm not seeing "Switch 2" visuals here personally.

And I'd imagine anyone who's played the Metroid Prime Remaster would agree (?). This looks very similar, they definitely used this games engine to make that remaster.

Its a nice teaser, what we looked at was just a glimpse that its clearly an evolution of Prime 1, a little bit of the combat, soundtrack and the environments, but i assume there is still a lot more to show about Prime 4, what gameplay innovations it will bring to the table? for this Direct they focused on the early bits but later trailers will show a lot more gameplay variety, like pretty much all Nintendo trailers do for their 'big' games
( Tears of the Kingdom or Mario 3D World for example)

IT's off but we want some fresh new gameplay. We don't want to play the same game. AT least i don't. I need some new wrinkles. Nothing stands out in this trailer. Granted it's not coming out in 2024. But look at the ~2d Zelda, Mario Party and Mario&Luigi game footage. Those scream new and exciting yet they are all at the end of the day ~2d Zelda, MarioParty and M&L games.

Wait so it's a Switch 1 game? wtf is going on?

The exact same play as BoTW is going on. Drag it out until it coincides with the launch of the next platform, while pretending the next platform doesn't exist for now. I think this is just Switch footage, and then they can wow us more with the Switch 2 launch at how much better it can be on that.

Im honestly very worried, there is no hook so far, the only positive I can say is that world you step into looks beautiful and the fact its coming in 2025 gives them more time to get them to make me care.

it's a bad trailer. IF you look at TotK trailer #1, the first gameplay it shows is Link diving off sky islands and then riding a big rock up into the sky using a new power.

This one shows what new wrinkle?

this was the first teaser for Totk

I wouldn't worry about Prime 4 , its clear that its gonna be an ambitious project for Nintendo they are just gonna show us bits until the big trailer

Yeah its very troubling, im afraid they are gonna phone this one in.. This needs to hit as hard as the first Metroid Prime.

The first teaser for MP4 was in 2018 or so.

That TotK teaser was from 2019.

The first TotK trailer was 1 year before the game and showed Link diving from sky islands and riding a rock back up to the sky. New wrinkles. Looked good. Looked fresh and new.

This MP4 trailer is (you'd think) 1 year before the game comes out.

That's a technicality, the first time we really saw Botw 2 it was Link and Zelda exploring the tunnels under Hyrule Castle.

Reading this forum reminds me yet again how happy I am to not be obsessed with graphics. I think it looks great. I would be perfectly fine with games looking like that on the Switch 2. Sorry you need shiny things to keep you happy.

That said, yes the teaser was extremely basic. That said, it is still likely that this is due to Nintendo not wanting to show too much of the game until they start to promote the Switch 2 rather than because it is a really basic game. How people can judge the gameplay of a Metroid game - which relies heavily on level design and structure - from a few seconds is beyond me. Same with worrying about if this is going to be a game about isolation. Other than the open air part, it seems very clear that everything shown was from a single area. It's undoubtedly the Ceres Station or abandoned vessel part of the game - a tutorial section to get you used to everything. Presumably Sylux shows up, kills everyone else, steals the important macguffin, and then Samus chases after him and lands on a new planet all by herself. And then the game begins properly.

Unfortunately, I was hoping the reveal could show us at least one thing new. It's been 17 years, so I suppose a standard Metroid Prime game is not the end of the world. It's not like it would be too soon to have another one. But Dread was completely different from Fusion and Super. I hope Beyond also gives us something beyond just another game in the series. I suppose we shall have to wait for the Switch 2 reveal to see.

That was 5 years before the game came out. And if you want to get technical about it, it's just a more expensive teaser than MP4 had.

MP4 coming out next year. It's a bad trailer.

Zelda trailer #1 released a year before the game and was a much more exciting trailer because it looked good and showed off some new wrinkles. IT was even 30 seconds shorter.

MP4 trailer could have been the trailer for MP1. I wouldn't have known the difference.

To me this trailer hit all the right notes as a Prime fan and any concerns I had about the game are gone.
I think the brief slice of gameplay shown was deliberately meant to be recognizable to both long-time fans and those who were introduced to the series with Prime 1 remastered. There will no doubt be new abilities and changes to the gameplay, but now we know for sure the core gameplay we know and love is still intact, and not being changed drastically for the sake of it.

The music seems to be up to series standard too, thankfully (Dread's OST sucked). The guitar riff that kicked in right when Sylux showed up was badass, and the music at the end was beautiful. The Prime games are known for their atmosphere, and this one looks to have it in spades.

Exciting to think this will be the first Prime game that isn't being held back by literal GameCube-level hardware. Switch is no powerhouse (understatement of the year) but it's a big jump up from the GCN/Wii and I'm excited to see what's possible now from a gameplay perspective.

Game looks good. Music is all over the place however or just loud in a rather distracting way. I look forward to learning more. Glad to see all that buildup to Sylux is finally out in the open.

Samus looks especially great.

"and will be nowhere near as well put together as other games in its genre" - what has led you to this conclusion? The Metroid prime trilogy are three of the best metroidvanias (especially in the 3D space) ever made, made by the same dev (even if some staff has probably changed), and following a similar looking blueprint as the original trilogy (not trying to get cute and introduce fundamental changes like other M or federation force did, for example).

There have been virtually no meaningful 3D Metroidvanias and very few exploration based shooters in the 17 years since corruption has been released. Why is it so shocking that Retro is creating a sequel to Metroid Prime instead of trying to reinvent the wheel? This reminds me a lot of the dialogue around Metroid Dread and how people wanted it to innovate more, but it ended up being an incredible Metroidvania in its own right.

Consider a serious brain piece examination if you think Ninty and Retro won't deliver on this :messenger_grinning_smiling:

I didnt think the trailer was underwhelming or anything at all. These games have always had mystery to them. No way they were gonna blow their whole load on this first real look at it.

Really by the numbers trailer not showcasing much of anything of note. Doesn't show the new hook, or much of anything.

I'm sure it'll be great though, but I always rank the Prime games behind the 2D ones. Would be shocked if this eclipses Dread for me, which I consider a nearly perfect game. But I'm looking forward to this.

It looks great but underwhelming at the same time. Its a Prime game for sure but I hope it has some new gameplay mechanics.

Looks like ass, the music is bland, the design looks so ancient, looks like xenosaga in PS2. Nintendo is ancient everybody does what Nintendont!

They are in the low end of the VIDEOgames business, they make a lot of money, but their product visually is really a disappointment. And they charge premium prices for this underwhelming software. I miss the Nintendo that tried to have the state of the art technology in their consoles. Howard Lincoln

Trailer wasn't great. It felt like they wanted to show something but didn't want to show too much.

I'm pretty sure the first scenes are from the "tutorial area" and then you move somewhere else.

Also, if Samus presses buttons on her arm cannon, where are the buttons?
