What have they self-published in regions outside of JP without the help of Bandai Namco, Sony, or Activision? Considering that the latter are large publishers people in this thread keep comparing them to, I'm curious.
Is From Software the last honest big name in gaming?

Larian is something else, and has been even before BG 3 was a thing
They've always listened to fans, always delivered incredibly ambitious projects for the company size, always adding more stuff and polish to their games etc.
And they really feel like a company made by passionate people. They make games that they would want to play, and watching their making ofs, you can really see that.
FROM is ... ok, I guess.
I really dont think their games are as varied as people think they are. With the exception of Sekiro and Armored Core, they've been making the same game mechanically over and over.
If you show me a screenshot from Elden Ring, maybe I wouldnt be able to guess if its from DS III, Bloodborne or ER
And despite offering different builds in some games, 90% of the players have finished their games using the light attack button + roll. Let's be real for a second.
Sekiro is their mechanicaly most demanding game and for that I respect it the most. It's a masterpiece.

Mostly stuff before 2012 or so, I think they found comfort in getting all that external funding, mostly from BNE.
The PS exclusive ones (Demon's Souls, Bloodborne and Déraciné) were published by Sony in Japan as well, it's common for smaller Japanese publishers to do a lot of work for larger ones; Acquire is anither example of that.
Edit: Misread what you say, yeah, nothing. But I believe it's something that they were starting to build up most recently; maybe we will see From Sotware America at some point.

I disagree, I think they took a winning formula and evolved it. Anything can be reduced it (just a shooter, just a platformer)… they basically came up with their own game. Bloodborne is measurably different from Dark Souls. Sekiro even more so, and Elden Ring is a culmination of everything.
They basically defined a whole new genre (Soulsborne).

There is no way anyone can say that From's games are milked. Ubisoft games are milked.
Everything you said is over a period of three decades. Super Mario also has many iterations but the IP evolved considerably over that time. Nobody would say Super Mario is milked.

Played some of them. It's a very okay type of game they make, but ultimately not something I'm super focussed on.

Dont think they've evolved it.
Dark Souls 3 plays like DS2, that plays like DS 1, that plays like Demons Souls. Same cadence, same basic gameplay.
Bloodborne is DS, but a little faster and with focus on offense due to the health regen mechanic. Transformations and secondary weapon change are the only significant changes in terms of mechanics, imo.
Elden Ring is open world DS, man. It plays exactly the same. Everyone expected this and its exactly what we got. And thats fine, its still a superb game.
Sekiro is the only one of the formula that has really spiced things up. It's faster like Bloodborne, has a secondary weapon with the arm that you can customize, can use jump/double jump during combat etc.
Watching videos of Sekiro gameplay you can notice how deep the combat is. In comparison, every DS/ER combat video looks pretty much the same: memorizing enemy pattern, then rolling + light attack
Props for FROM for creating the "genre". But they should really spice things up sometimes like they did with Sekiro.
People arent bothered by this like I am tho, so I'll just accept that my opinion isnt popular.
To me its the same exact gameplay almost everytime, but with different bosses and different scenarios. But thats enough for most people.

I am playing Warhammer 40k Rouge trader now too - just amazing
i hope they get a bigger budget for full voice acting and more cutscene animations - that is the only thing they are missing now

Big name and Honest sounds like a contradiction to me, if they are honest then they are not really big.
Yeah I played a couple of smaller games before like Mechanicus (great game), the Space Marine games and Darktide (all good fun)
Helped setting up some base knowledge of 40k - but Rouge trader makes you REALLY understand it

They're definitely one of the GOATs at this point, but they're not the only ones. From the West, you've got Larian, Moon Studios, Saber Interactive, end even CDPR (with some effort to course correct). Eastern developers in general seem to be on fire right now - FromSoftware, Atlus, Square Enix, Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, Vanillaware, Shift Up, and Game Science to name a few.
That said, I'm always down for another FromSoftware appreciation thread.

Yeah, totally agree. Larian really feels like a studio driven by love for the craft — their attention to fan feedback and depth of content is just rare. BG3 raised the bar, but even before that, Divinity 2 was proof of their ambition.
And yeah, FROM has made some great games, but they definitely stick to a formula. Sekiro stood out because it actually forced you to learn its unique rhythm. No cheese builds, no hiding behind summons — just you and your reflexes.
