Doug Bowser, the Useless President of Nintendo of America

Listening to Kit and Krysta, two former employees who each spent over a decade working at Nintendo of America and hosted official online shows for the company, you quickly realize there's a serious issue with how Nintendo communicates with the public.

According to them, this kind of situation isn't new—but back in the day, they could go speak with Reggie, or he would at least be informed of what was going on, step in, and communicate accordingly. That's no longer the case. Doug Bowser doesn't fill (or no longer fills) that role. They're even surprised by the current NOA president's lack of communication. Maybe some interviews have already been done or are under embargo, but that's not the point—what's missing is a proper middleman and a strong face to explain things. In fact, he hasn't done a major interview in ages.

The guy is practically invisible on social media. He posts the occasional useless tweet on Twitter/X about what he ate, how he enjoys mountain biking, and sometimes tweets in Spanish. That might be fine if he were just another influencer—but we're talking about the President of Nintendo of America. And sure, it's a Japanese company, and you can't just say or do anything you want, but he could at least show us some behind-the-scenes moments, engage in conversation, or simply present a better image. Obviously, he's not the only one at fault—there are countless layers between him and Furukawa—but it really feels like Nintendo has inherited Sony's arrogance. The company behind the mustached plumber now seems full of businessmen selling video games like washing machines.

My apologies in advance if it offends anyone. But can anyone tell me why YouTube videos always have people looking like retards in YouTube thumbnails? Am I missing something or am I just getting too old?

Apparently YouTube algorithm likes that as people are dumb and have been proven to prefer these idiotic thumbnails. I also hate that shit.

Reggie entered Nintendk when press conference became fun. It was the perfect storm

Bowser doesn't have the charisma. Can't work like that. No idea how good of a president he is, but it's very much seen that Nintendo doesn't have faces now

Doug probably doesn't want to be in Directs as often as other figureheads. That, and Nintendo wants people to focus on the Japanese side of the company in official communications.

Bowser is probably more interested in taking care of the shareholder concerns than public sentiment. Thus, these drastic price increases based on Switch's success. Iwata and Reggie at least addressed public concerns, and in Iwata's case, concerns for employees within the company.
They don't make them like this anymore folks. Tellingly, if they did these corporations don't want them.

Reggie is a very public figure, I don't think the position requires you to be a spokesperson.

Besides, when was Sony sending anyone to die to answer why they were rising prices on hardware that should be $299 by now. I also don't remember anyone justifying the $800 price tag of the "Pro"

It is what it is folks, vote with your wallet.

I strongly disagree. Nintendo regularly share their news via Nintendo Direct.

What else do you need? Results or anecdotes?
What information should the CEO tell you aside from official Nintendo news?

You are literally accusing the company for nothing.

Doug Bowser is just a figure head. Better than running his mouth while having nothing to say though.

There will never be another guy like Reggie in Nintendo, or Iwata for that matter.

...what ?
Why should the President be all talky in the first place, his job is not PR department, his job is to manage Nintendo and etc.
Hire a PR rep or another layer, assistant even to bridge those communication gaps.

lol people getting lowkey mad because some guy choose to not use twitter like a maniac.

Is Nintendo of Europe even managed by 1 person?
Stéphan Bole is the current Chief Operating Officer and President of Nintendo of Europe.
They consolidated the various European subsidiaries into one parent a couple of years ago.

Edit: it's actually "Luciano Pereña". Never heard of the dude.

Is it hurt Xbox fans coming up with these plans to bring the industry down?

This is the exact same tactic you all pulled with PlayStation attacking the CEOs that no one really even cared about .

I watched the same video, and while I value their perspective, I feel like this has a personal side, since they were fired on the high point of switch life, when Nintendo tried to cut down on marketing costs.

They patiently waited for a time were they could point out how Nintendo would miss having them, and they finally doing it now.

Reggie was very charming for a video game executive, he seemed socially gifted. Doug has always struck me as a more reserved, perhaps even shy individual. That doesn't mean he can't run NoA effectively but it does mean there's a big difference in how these 2 operate.

Another big example is the late Iwata compared to the last 2 Nintendo CEOs. Iwata did E3 and Nintendo directs himself, he spoke in English instead of using a translator and seemed very proud of his fluency. He even had his own online show that he also hosted called Iwata asks where he would interview Nintendo figures. Iwata was everywhere, he more so than Reggie was the face of Nintendo. The last he'd do was shy away from the camera. He was one of a kind, may he rest in piece.

Comparably the last 2 CEOs have had very private careers, Nintendo's CEO wasn't even there to announce the Switch 2. You bet your ass Iwata was there to announce the 3ds, Wii and Wii U. It's very clear this is a very different Nintendo and I'm not saying that's bad, but it certainly its certainly not the same.

Who literally gives a fuck what some suit posts on social media. Man console fanboys get really cranky when the marketing isn't exactly to their desires.

Reggie's media appearances were appreciated, but I don't necessarily expect the role of public spokesman to be filled by the president. I haven't noticed any problems with communication since Reggie left.

I also doubt any kind of explanation by Bowser on why games are 90 bucks now, would reduce the outrage. People have real grievances and no amount of corporate bullshitting is going to make them go away.

Who cares about Doug Bowser? NOA has fuck all say in anything other than distribution and translations. They don't set prices.

All he'd say is "My bosses think this is fine"

The truth is even though Reggie was public and likeable, he didn't seem to hold much sway where it would have mattered. Not sure if he ever did, but if he pushed for more powerful chip for Wii it would have fallen on deaf years. He also failed to get widespread third party support.

He was great at managing what Japan HQ gave him and was a good public speaker and motivator, but I don't think Nintendo's history would have been all that different with someone else at the helm.

Would love to see an event where the host says 'And now presenting The Useless President of Nintendo....DOUG BOWSER'.
Crowd goes mild.

Sony is going the other way, the role and importance of the japanese homebase has diminished during PS4-5 era, aside from Polyphony Digital there's not much left there

Led by an american engineer and it's mostly diving into amd's used parts bin anyway and putting it together. Nothing compared to PS1-3 hardware design. Ultimately the western management calls all the shots these days.
