IGN: "Console Gaming is Too Damn Expensive, Something Has to Give."

After the Xbox price rises, the lads at IGN (Brian Altano and Ryan McCaffrey) are fearful for the future of consoles.

Between $80 games and price increases instead of price drops on Xbox, PlayStation, and more, it seems like we're all getting priced out of console gaming. So what's that mean for the future?

I don't know what is most weird.

Microsoft upping their prices in a market where they are already behind, or IGN being silent while Nintendo and Sony ups their prices, and only barks when Microsoft joins in on the price increase.

If you think console gaming is expensive it might be time to get into firestick gaming.

I honestly think loads of people will choose to do that when next generation rolls around.

I mean, consoles are getting more expensive within the same generation. What do we expect to happen when new hardware arrives?

Console gaming too expensive?
Stupid ps5 or ps5 pro is cheaper than mid graphics cards... alone....
I feel it's quite affordable. people just are used to 60$ which .... let's look at OBLVION.
2006, 50$... that would be 100$ today. yet games are not 100$. They are 70-80 and way way way longer.

Also, console games look essentially the same as pc games nowadays. There are not 2 hugely separate completely different versions. It's the same game running on pc and console. And consoles are 4k, 60fps, have screenshots and so on. Just like pc.
It used to be that you showed ps2 game and pc version and the difference was clear. not anymore.

Everything got 2-3x more expensive in last 5 years alone. Look at gpu prices or food... OR WHATEVER.
Console is cheaper than mid smartphone ffs.

Didn't Ryan just buy a $700 PS5 Pro just because he wanted the best GTA6 experience on day one and he was concerned about further price hikes? I highly doubt he is personally getting priced out of anything.

He said he was going to trade his previous PS5 in at GameStop to help fund it.
But you're right, he also admitted that he's fortunate to be able to build an expensive PC.

Can we stop getting new console iterations every 5-6 years?
Nintendo has already started this. The other two need to follow suit and bite the bullet of pushing their console to it's very edge/limit of time until they finally release a new one, especially after they all standardize ray tracing and AI upscaling, either next gen or the one after.

Decade-long waits between generations would be preferable.

Make the next gen about efficiency in power consumption, cheaper for production, and get your shit management in line so games stop costing $300+ million to make.

The entire industry can use a "power" pause for a while and focus on efficient affordable tech. Get your tools in check to make game dev cycles shorter and cheaper instead of your engines constantly having to satisfy the need for more power which cost even more money.

What needs to "give" is player expectations in regards to power, graphics, and scale.

A Ps5 Pro costs 800 euro where I live.
A Geforce 4070, which is far from mid, costs 669 euro where I live.

EDIT: READ BEFORE QUOTING ME.

People getting so mad in here against pc players so let's sum this up :

Rofif says PS5 pro is cheaper than a mid GPU ALONE.
I say a gpu in the higher end is cheaper than the Pro.
Don't make weird scenarios in your fanboy rage and UNDERSTAND it has nothing to do with a functioning system, it is simply just to point out Rofif is wrong in regards of his comparison.

Stop being dumb and start using your brain before quoting me.

It's so basic English it should be easy to understand for everyone.

Rofif are probably laughing his ass off reading people who quote me.
And rightfully so.
Having to make a big ass disclaimer for such a short post

Is ms plan still to release a next gen system in the near future when they just put a 100 dollar increase on a 5 year old system.

Stop buying shit you think is "too expensive".

The industry will correct itself if needed. And if not then there's already tens of thousands of games out there already for you to experience.

And? One of those things is a full system with a controller and 2Tb of storage. You making the argument that's worth less than 130 euro?

Even weirder to only complain about a couple of IGN editors and not the price hikes themselves.

If we're stuck with PS5 and current Xbox as the default consoles for a long time then it's a shame we missed out on hardware based image reconstruction for them. Would have given them a much needed performance boost.

Gaming is not that expensive. I'm over here spending hundreds of dollars extra for a bit more leg room on a 3 hour flight and worrying about spending an extra $10 on a 100 hour videogame.

Price increases don't impact me...and there's a lot of me's out there.

I have three $40 dollar games releasing later this year. They'll give me years of entertainment. The next generation of consoles won't have much pull.

Gaming is more affordable than ever! Go me's!

Name one of the form of entertainment whose prices have gone up as little as games have.

Nintendo 64 games were literally $60 back in the '90s. Anyone who complains doesn't understand basic economics or how currencies work.

"priced out of console gaming". LMAO.

This in 2025 when people drop tens of thousands on MTX, buy $250 gamepads or have sim rigs worth tens of thousands is funny to me.

Consoles are still a dirt cheap entry level into gaming. I mean you get a machine that gets software support for 8+ years. Put $10/month in a jar for 7-8 years and you've got 840-960 bucks when a new gen launches. Should be enough for games+system.

Games are also cheaper than ever. Just don't buy new games or look for indies. There are tons of deals each month, even on consoles.

If you want to join the discussion then read the post I replied to, then you'd understand my context.

I understood the context perfectly. The only difference is I'm not getting stuck in the weeds of defining "mid". For the sake of keeping things simple lets just say mid as in mid-price. e.g. roughly median average for GPU's currently popular. Which I'd say is in the 700-800 range being generous given how expensive the top-end gets.

The person you responded to also stressed thats the price of the GPU alone, just a card. The benefits of which are also going to be dependant on the rest of the system.

Lets just be honest, on the hardware PC remains significantly more expensive, and the reality is whatever price increases are coming up on console games are almost certainly going to be mirrored on the PC side.

You just want to argue for the sake of arguing?

Rofif said PS5 pro is cheaper than a mid card.
I proved him wrong.

You somehow for whatever reason, change the direction of the discussion, saying pc gaming hardware is more expensive than consoles.

Why are you telling me this? I know this, that's not what the discussion is about lol.

Microsoft might do well if they hang on for a bit longer because they will have the most affordable option by far (Game Pass cloud streaming to a TV)

I don't think they are saying PC gaming is cheap. It has always been more expensive. Nobody is subsidizing your PC. It's just consoles were always a cheaper option, and dropped in price as the generation went on.

I mean damn, 20 years ago before the ps3 launch you could get a ps2 for $129. Now consoles are going up in price as the generation goes on, and PS5 pro is $700.

I'm not complaining and will spend more than $700 on a z2 extreme handheld this year, but the days of MILFs impulse buying a console for their kids are probably gone.

good luck finding somewhere to shove it, so it can shoot pixels
The only luck I need is people who read the replies doesn't have reading comprehension.

And that luck seems to decrease with every quote.
