The Alters - Reviews Thread

This game popped up on my X timeline yesterday, had no idea it existed before then, looked it up and liked everything that I read. I will pick it up on PS5 eventually, too many games 😱

Frostpunk 1 Launch Peak - 29K
Frostpunk 2 Launch Peak - 32K (Released on Gamepass also)
Assassins Creed Valhalla Launch Peak - 15K (Released on Gamepass also)
Atomfall Launch Peak - 6K (Released on Gamepass also)
DOOM Dark Ages Launch Peak - 31K (Launched on Gamepass also)

Seems Alters doing well. Half the number as DOOM:DA when both of them are available on Gamepass at Launch.
Doom did really bad.

Yes the game is fun, there's ot of narrative in between the management game and "see what comes next" is the bigger draw for me.

Apparently the Gamepass version is 0.9.5.0
There's no such thing as a game pass version, game pass is just a subscription, but yes the xbox version seems to be older, though the only real bug I've encountered so far, alters disappearing into a "none module", is still present in the latest version.

Gamepass pc(xbox app) versions generally get patches later than steam versions, sometimes not at all(quantum break's gamepass version is broken). One of the biggest problems of xbox pc games.

I picked this up on GOG and played through the prologue. Game has a fascinating hook, and I'm loving the narrative, not entirely sold on the gameplay (yet). If it's mostly base building and people management, then it'll probably be pretty mid. The few times I left the spaceship and explored to gather resources to bring back was pretty cool. I wonder, at times, if I'll be smart enough to figure this out enough to survive lol

The Alters is the first game in years where I feel the huge disconnection between the narrative and gameplay elements.

I love the game so far, but everything that is not about your alters, setting, art and story feels like a chore and an afterthought. Micromanagement for the sake of it, Fallout shelter clone with silly limits, also the game is trying to be deeper than in actually is. It's very linear despite all the gameplay theatrics.

There's also bugs, needlessly steep learning curve with downright poor tutorials and very poorly implemented save system.

I'd say wait a bit before they'll fix at least some of the annoyances because otherwise this is way more realized story framework than Mickey 17.

I'm 3 hours in now. It's a good game. Has some more gameplay to it than they let on. Beer pong champ!

I read it's 30 hours long? I don't see myself completing this lol… I'll play till death stranding 2 then likely never touch it again, but will YT the ending so I see what it's all leading up to.

Definitely recommend it to those remotely interested. I thought it'd suck but I'm having a blast so far.

Interesting concept, but holy shit, does this game get annoying quickly.

I'm racing against time to build multi-stage equipment that takes many in-game hours. I've got five days until the sunrise wipes out the base and everyone in it. If we don't build and deploy this stuff in time, we all get burned to a cinder.

Meanwhile, my three alters can't do a single goddamn thing without me telling them. The botanist says "I think you should know we're running out of food," and then he goes off to bed. That's your only job, you lazy, hateful fuck.

The technician complains that it's "all work work work, and no entertainment", and spends his time arguing with the scientist. Jesus H, we're all going to be dead in five days because you useless cunts want to play fucking beer pong.

Honestly, I can appreciate what the developers were aiming for here, but the execution is very poor. I slept through the last few days to see what would happen, but all I got was a cheapo text screen saying "the alters rebelled against you".

What did that actually entail? Screw every last one of them, I only wish there had been a cutscene where I could watch them all burn.

I really really liked the gameplay and resource system, however yeah the alters dont help at all...and i ran out of time twice and everyone died. Im not starting over from scratch again... /uninstalled.
I thought the second time i played it perfectly and would have everything done but it was almost impossible, i couldnt go harvest resources cuz of a storm, so im just sitting inside wasting time.

Game is pretty interesting. I have 4 Alters unlocked, Tech, Refiner, Scientist and Botanist. Growing food is a time consuming thing.

There is a lot of time management and in Act 1 I set up a travel Pylon in an area that should connect to another mining outpost but I can't get it to work. I have to figure that out. Also make sure you have stuff queued. No idleness is allowed.

Research is important. I need a person just to use the workbench right now. But I am doing that some before I head out. I have also been using my refiner to mine. But I am swapping him up with my technician. There may be a day when I want to send 4 people out to mine for resources but I haven't decided yet.

Exploring is cool.

How long did it take you?
~30 hours, but I failed once.. at around mid game, too much chatting and procrastinating during day hours.. had to load a save way back like 10 days. I hope theres DLC for this gem

only 3 chapters sadly. 87 in game days, but I guess you can finish it faster./SPOILER]

30 hours for the price they are selling the game is an amazing deal though. I have to play it man, the problem is that I dont like having a timer when playing

Theres no 'total' timer per say , but you have to do a few key objectives in each chapter. You can try to ace it by doing all optional obj too, which can make this game pretty hard, otherwise your alters when properly juggled each evening will do almost everything by themselves you will only need to explore the areas at the beginning of each chapter.

Finished it yesterday. Really loved the game, for the price I think it's an absolute gem.
I do think it can be a bit too punishing for my liking though. If I had the option I would absolutely ease up some settings like having longer days without radiation to help me explore. I really like the visuals of the planet and loved seeing the landscape but I always felt like I was in a rush so I ran everywhere and never had a chance to simply walk around and enjoy the scenery.
