Gears of War Art style and Atmosphere Degrading with each Re-release

I thought I was imagining that the cutscenes were worse than I remembered them. Wow. Should've trusted my gut.
The original is better in every way. But to be fair, the degradation of Gears started as early as the very first sequel, which was extremely far removed from the tone and feeling of the first game.

Gears 1 was action-horror. Gears 2 was generic Hollywood. And it only got worse from there.

Feels a bit like:

It's always surprising how many of these remakes/remasters fail to capture the art direction and atmosphere of the original despite having higher fidelity assets

true.

the only one that I know, that replaced a ton of assets and all the textures, while staying 99% true to the original, is Perfect Dark.

it was so true to the original that I remember at the time it came out, some said it's a barebones remaster... because they didn't remember how the original looked, and the new assets just looked like people remembered the original looked through their nostalgia glasses.

it's a near perfect (hehe) remaster imo.

I beat the Re-Remaster recently and something felt off. I reinstalled the 360 version and the difference was pretty stark. The new version is just too clean for it's own good. These remasters losing the soul isn't just a meme. These subtle effects do a lot for the atmosphere.

The problem is that they didn't bother to fix everything they fucked up in the Ultimate Edition for Reloaded.
Crazy to me that they swung and missed...twice in the graphics department, but tbf Reloaded doesn't really seem like they touched the assets very much, if at all, from the Ultimate Edition. A shame.

Anyone tried emulating the 360 version? Can 60FPS with a resolution bump be achieved?
You can play the original pc release instead of emulating

I'm more surprised about the amount of differences between Ultimate and Reloaded. I thought it was just a 4k port with some lighting changes.

That version of the game doesn't work anymore because it required Games for Windows Live? Or did they patch it to remove that?
Usually, you can work around that. I think you can still connect to the servers. There may be patches.
I may try finding a copy of the PC version.

AH. Archive.org has a copy without DRM and GFWL all ready to go. It even has a mod where you play against AI.

Yeah. That copy works great. It is pretty much abandonware now. It is stuck in 16:9, but you can crank up all the graphics settings.

I will have to contrast and compare between the old version and the new one.

It may be one of those cases where less is more.

It really has lost a lot of the personality of the original. I played GoW Ultimate for the first time earlier this year and, while I still had a great time, there were several segments that I remembered being a little moodier, visually. And looking at a playthrough of the original on YT - yeah, they absolutely did scrub the flair the original game had. Believe me - the irony of now suddenly clamoring for the endless gray-and-brown of the original isn't lost on me - but that was Gears of War's look, dammit.

Anyway, my hope is that we eventually get a re-release of the 2007 PC port of Gears 1 on GOG so we can finally have the best version of the game back in the wild.

It is kind of an annoying trade-off, because I'm willing to make it for the better performance, clarity of the image, shit vehicle section fixed, and improvements to controls...but I don't like the stylistic choices where the lighting and effects that gave it a bit of a horror vibe are dampened, the grime and wear on objects reduced taking away some of the edge, and just some effects literally being missing or not clear enough for gameplay (ex. grenades to close emergence holes).

All I've ever wanted "improved" from the older Gears trilogy is more color variation, reduced 360-era bloom that blows out some areas poorly, some enhanced destruction on objects + enemies, and then what they have successfully done (non-blurry textures, no aliasing, higher FPS + better frametimes).

In the original PC version, you can crank up the post processing effects to intense. You can make it really pop.

Man I remember playing the first Gears when I got my very first plasma TV, it was almost transformative for me at the time. Just like the Bluepoint remakes (SotC & Demon's Souls) and RE4 remake, it's technically better, higher IQ, but all of the art style and atmosphere was ripped out.

I hate to see this kind of thing, honestly. Modern kids/teens are brought up on this soulless crap and they're next generation's game devs. Artistry in game design is going to be severely hampered.

Gears 1 was action-horror.
I have never seen it that way.
Replayed GoW 1 on the 360 a week ago and didn't think much about it having horror elements and if so, it didn't work for me.

It's still a fun game, started GoW 2 directly after the first one and man, they did improve on everything here if you ask me.

It didn't have traditional survival horror game mechanics, but horror was definitely a main component of the game's presentation. It's even reflected in the advertisements at the time.

Not all horror is "creepy-scary Thomas the tank engine in liminal spaces."

GoW being better than the first in tone and atmosphere? Boy, howdy. Now, the multiplayer was terrific, and that part of the game did actually get better and better with time. But not the presentation and design of the campaign. That got progressively worse.

But no need to argue on that one, honestly, because I'm sure everyone can agree that post-Three the franchise solidly hit a wall, and the wall fared better.

Atleast the 360 version did get a 60fps boost through backwards compatiblity on Series X|S. If only the Xbox could've 4k enhanced it like they did 2 and 3.

I don't know. I kind of like the Reloaded version. I think the addition of some color was a wise idea.

The original kind of leverages the darker atmosphere to cover up the lack of detail.

I don't quite get why they smoothed out the features on the characters. They made them prettier for some reason.

It is a case where they went for realism over atmosphere.

I mean, we play it in system link co-op mode. Even if the game has a creepy or scary atmosphere, the co-op mode ruins it for me. But I don't think that's a bad thing. That's probably why I never thought of the game as a horror'esque game.

I only played GoW 1 & 2 back then, and 2 simply plays much better than 1 in direct comparison.
I can't say anything about 3 yet, but soon.

Apart from coop and system link horde mode, I never played the franchise in multiplayer.
