Oblivion Remastered? GAF impressions?

What did GAF think of Oblivion Remastered?

I played the original when it came out, what, 20 years ago? I enjoyed it, although it felt like a downgrade after Morrowind. I am thinking that I might appreciate it more now that time has passed and Bethesda seems to have lost their magic. I doubt we'll get a great ES game going forward, so maybe I can find one going backward. I didn't like it as much as Morrowind or Skyrim, but it was entertaining enough. I've played Skyrim to death and seem incapable of replaying Morrowind, but I'm thinking maybe Oblivion?

Anyhow, what does GAF think of the remaster?

I'm still playing it.

People have some performance and visual issues with it but you can get around all of that with lossless scaling and reshade.

There are almost 40 pages of impressions and discussion in the OT

Consensus is "it's okay" and also it's got performance issues that (I believe) still haven't been addressed and likely won't be.

Did they ever release mod tools on consoles or a patch allowing one to change color grading to match the original on consoles?

Thanks. I searched but missed that somehow. I don't have time for 40 pages, so I'll just hope to capture some brief impressions here.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. Didn't encounter a lot of the troubles I saw complained about. If I did, I didn't notice.

My favorite aspect is that it's still creation engine under the hood and thus very much Oblivion in nature. I like that it's the real game underneath with a beautifulface-lift, though I'm not entirely sold on some mechanical changes. It's still a downgrade from Morrowind, as you say, for the most part - nothing is changed about that.

But if you enjoyed it back then and have an Elder Scrolls itch, it very likely will scratch it. I'd say give it a go.

I didn't respect oblivions soundtrack game as much as Skyrim but playing this for a couple hours I now have a few more bangers in my repertoire.

I took a break from streaming it to my steamdeck because I was thinking they might patch out the stutter. I am not a smart man

Pretty awesome even with the dogshit performance.

The leveling changes elevate it. Original one was already one of my favorites, but I like the new version way more.

I think it's amazing. I never played the original game so I can't compare but to me it's one of the best games I've played in years. It really scratches the Bethesda itch even though I think Skyrim is vastly superior.

I loved it. I played the original and it's pretty cool to have a remaster like this one

Especially since we don't get a lot of Elder Scrolls-like games.

I tried the Oblivion remaster out for a few hours then switched to Avowed to play that instead.
A remaster of an old game I already played way back on the Xbox 360.
Maybe someday after the games industry implodes and nothing new gets made.

The gameplay felt incredibly dated to me.

It was remembered better for me than it actually was. Rose tinted to the max

That's also why Halo remake will be like putting lipstick on a pig sure to that games dated level design.

You realise how much more sterile the world is compared to Skyrim, but enjoyed it. Didn't face any real performance issues myself on my rig, well worth the pay but and was needed for the next generation to enjoy this game.

I'm sure engine problems will be more brute forced over time

Bethesda is one publisher who releases most of their games on GOG eventually. I am waiting for this to drop on GOG.

I went back to Skyrim. Performance for Oblivion wasn't great on my Steam Deck.

Really enjoyed it, and I liked the balance and leveling tweaks they applied.

The game desperately needs an official survival mode though. It would fit Oblivion way more than Skyrim due to not suffering from frigid air 80% of the time and also due to the map being designed so well among many other reasons.

I played it when it launched and it ran like shit on Xbox Series X and was crashing during longer sessions or after a large number of fast travels. I don't mind remasters/remakes having the original game working underneath and Diablo 2 Resurrected for instance was very good. But ffs, work on the technical side before you start charging serious money for the new version.

I was never a big fan of this game, had better memories from playing Morrowind and Skyrim. That opinion hasn't changed since it's still the same game minus the visuals and some tweaks.

Graphics is technically nice but changes the entire atmosphere of the world for the worse

Everything else is bad old Oblivion, which was pretty poor design-wise even in 2006

I played it for a few hours and never touched it again. Oblivion just did not age that well.

I liked it. Its the old Oblivion in new shiny optics. Especially the magic stuff....spell making and cheesing it isnt something you get often nowadays. I had my fun.

Runs like shit but looks nice. Underneath, it is still the same old game (and I would argue that Oblivion aged pretty poorly). It's the best thing that Bethesda have released since Skyrim, though.

Its aight. Im still mad they havent adressed ps5 perf issues. They dropped patch for xbox like in following weekend of launch.

Didn't play the original even though I think I have it (or might be Morrowind) but I enjoy the remaster even with the shit fps at times.

I played 200 hours and finished it on PS5Pro. Its great fun, just like the original. Skyrim is better obviously its a later iteration but its still definately worth to play.
On the positive side its looks and plays great, with some great quests and characters.
The negatives are the inconsistent performance and the bugs (especially in the late game).

PS5Pro performance mode runs really great inside indoor locations and towns but it can be quite inconsistent outside with many random stutterings especially near the oblivion gates.
There are many-many bugs especially in the late game and there were many crashes for me during the 200house (10+). Some bugs are VERY annoying but fortunately I didn't experience any game (or quest) breaking bugs. I could finish ALL the main and factions questlines and ALL of the additional quests I could find in the game I didn't find and experience any broken quest.

One of my fav games back then, hardly playable right now.

AI is terrible and gets stuck a lot.

Difficulty modes are laughably bad, the difference between normal and hard is so huge early on.

Combat gameplay wasn't the best 20 years ago and it's really bad nowadays.

A shame, i lasted less than 5 hours, this remaster was just a lame cashgrab with 0 work, i'd either wait for Skyblivion if you can get it on PC or maybe get KCD2 if you haven't yet, it's the game that gave me the most Elder Scrolls vibes in a while and it's an incredible game. Or Tainted Grail which is also a TES like game.

Oblivion Remastered is a visually excellent enhanced version of the superb original that is unfortunately spoilt by atrocious optimisation and Unreal Engine 5 traversal stuttering.

What irks me is that Microsoft shadow dropped this with obvious issues on PC (which at least can be mitigated somewhat with mods) and PS5 (where it runs terrible, even on PS5 Pro with massive stutters in my experience) and the developers pretty much abandoned fixing it shortly after, clearly because they never had any interntion of ever fixing it properly. Pretty scummy if you ask me especially as this was released as a full priced triple A game.

Finished Nights of Nine quest then was going through the fighter's guild quests and got incredibly bored. The combat doesn't hold up. Sadly. I will always remember this one fondly, but I don't need to play it anymore.

Loved every second and it'll definitely be on my GOTY list.

I faked sick at work the moment it was announced and available and sped home to get it. I'm over 40 and I fucking did that.

No game has done that to me before. Ever.

Thanks for the input, guys. I decided to get it. Hopefully it runs okay on PS5 Pro. I've heard mixed reactions about that, some saying it runs great and others saying it is full of bugs. I have a pretty high tolerance for bugs in a Bugthesda RPG, so I'm okay with some problems.

Looking forward to the visual makeover of the forests. The overly saturated green never seemed right to me.

I had crossed off open-world RPGs from my lists a year ago, thinking they were too time-consuming. I was all about the short, linear action-adventure games. But I feel differently now. I'm looking for a game to just wander around and have fun in. I'm not going to approach it like a to-do checklist but just explore. I'll turn off HUD elements if they let me and skip fast travel. I want to immerse myself in a relaxing game that rewards exploration. Elder Scrolls games have always been good at that.
