Doom: The Dark Ages is a flop

Its a decent game. Seemed to do fairly well, with everyone but the eternal crowd.
im not saying it isn't, im just saying it didn't look like a "Oh my god i must play this game right now".

When it goes on sale for cheap it'll probably sell loads because I imagine many people will jump in being like "why not, this could be fun for a week".

It's now in the low 50 euro range on the latest PSN sale. I contemplate getting it as I enjoyed the trial, but I also have a bit too much on my plate right now. I imagine it'll be in the 40 range on the next inevitable sale during Christmas. Decisions, decisions.

TDA already had a 33% off sale which bumped its players to 1.3k for that weekend.

Eternals first sale was 25% off a few months after launch and was at 7.6k players for that weekend. Im sorry but thats the reality, its the worst in the modern triology, and the player numbers reflect that.

We're not talking about quality here tho. I am ofc not disagreeing about being the worst, in fact I also consider it pretty mid with Eternal being a million times better. I'm just saying, that its players will increase/drop over time based on its price and in 10 something years youll still see people playing it.

While I agree on the Quake reboot part - calling Doom a dead franchise seems a little extreme. Game was still pretty well received and managed to break in to the top 20 for the year for a decent amount of time. It might be time for a pause to work on a different IP but I would imagine they still consider Doom viable.
I hope you are right, sincerely! And it will be more like Doom 2016.

I enjoyed the game but I'd rate it below Eternal and 2016 personally. I did actually enjoy the melee/parry "stand and fight" mechanics. The whole thing had a Masters of the Universe vibe which was awesome.

One thing that I thought was a little lame, it seemed like they were trying sooooo hard to make Thira into a thing. Wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to make a spinoff or DLC starring her.

In this universe they've covered DOOM and Quake, she seems like a Hexen / Heretic

This game makes me lament for a true heretic/hexen modern game. Would have been better just shifting Doom to Fantasy and just do the fantasy.

Give me three classes and take on the serpent riders or whoever the fuck.

MS owns the rights. Give it to Id and boom. Much better than Doom Eternal.

Smart people with taste weren't interested because they all got burnt by how bad Doom Eternal was.
And then the few people who enjoyed Eternal felt burnt because Dark Ages was a pivot away from what they enjoyed.

Still waiting 75% off.

2016 is still the peak of modern DOOM. Eternal sucked I hated the combat puzzle aspect and the constantly having to do things in combat to farm more resources. It wasn't fun to shoot the demons which was a sin. Dark Ages was fun to run through and kill demons so I consider it a success. There's some parts in the middle that get a little tiresome, but it picks up steam as it goes along. A solid good game maybe not great.

I know what you mean. I didn't like it too.

Loved Doom 2016 and Eternal was alright, probably not as good as Doom 2026 but not bad. But I played the opening level of this and didn't feel it. Just as well it was on GamePass.
Loved both 2016 and eternal. Some of the design decisions with this game was just baffling. The open spaces adds nothing and actively hurts it. The dragon stuff sucks. The robot stuff sucks. They just lost their balls.

yeah its basically this. they managed to alienate all their base.
this was better than eternal gameplay wise. but thats not much of a bar.
its dragged down by nonsensical narrative, which still trying to take itself serious in a frickin doom game.
also the horrible mecha, dragon sections which are basically qte fests.
maps are also pretty uninspired and bland.

You gotta wonder if we've all been too hard on Konami for trying to reign Kojima in during the MGS 4/5 days. Flying out all those hollywood types to Japan etc couldn't have been cheap for Sony to finance with nothing to show in return.

This type of thinking is why gaming is going the way that it is. This type of number crunching and not wanting amazing created things is sad. Under no circumstances did any of us go too "hard" on Konami.

I would agree with you if DS2 was an 'amazing created thing'.

It's just Kojima using someone else's money to fly out his favorite celebrities. In terms of game play, he hasn't made a game better than Phantom Pain. 🤷‍♂️

From the very first trailer I thought this looked dead boring, but only because I've been doing this gaming lark for too long now. Single player shoot 'em ups hold no appeal anymore, there's no new thrill left to be had.

To each his own I think DS2 is an amazing game. I didn't even beat Phantom Pain and I'm a massive stealth fan but it's just not a well designed game even if the stealth aspect is well done.

The 1st person platforming ?
The focus on a poorly written story that's at the level of a Marvel fanfic.

I didn't mind the platforming all that much, got the impression it was there to break the pace of combat and leave some breathing room. Plus I've played Metroid Prime so I'm used to it. :goog_relieved:

I don't know, I found jumping from wall to wall very difficult at some times in Eternal, the perspective was all over the place

I dunno, I thought it was fine. I played it with mouse and keyboard, wonder if that makes any difference

Worst thing about Eternal imo were the purple goo and those fucking tentacles. But still, amazing game, easy 9/10 for me.

Players seem to really love Eternal and I won't argue about it, but I thought the weird crab-man platforming was a bad direction to take Doom. I quickly lost interest when that mechanic was introduced.
