[MLiD] PS6 & PSSR2 Dev Update

They know the handheld is the future of Playstation hardware. For me this is a way more exciting product than the PS5 Pro or PS6.

Them targeting 60fps with reduced resolution (like Days's Gone low power implementation) is good news.

People thinking it will flop are going to be very disappointed. They are going to sell everything they produce, like with the Portal.

MILD? Really?

Make yo minds up. He is either full of shit or a reliable source.

God damn.
Its a mixed bag. Most of his direct leaks from AMD/Sony/Intel seem to be correct. His Nvidia stuff is almost always wrong and it seems he doesn't actually have any good sources there. His own speculation or his "soft leaks" or the stuff he gets from retailors (like they would know anything of value) is dogshit.

PS6 handled

We can only hope it bomb as fast as possible.

A lot of people are excited for the handheld on here though. It wont be a series S situation, supposedly.

I take you have some insider info then on how fucked we are? Like in "no way next gen is 2027" fucked or worse?

I cant talk about consoles, tbh I have no view on that stuff. People say Sony has bought a lot of memory for the here and now, but I am not sure of their stock holding. It all came from this guy, and I can only assume that he does have contacts at Sony and AMD for how hard he goes for them

I only know about PC stuff tbh.

Hopefully, 2027 everything will be ok.

You can be excited as much as you want, i dread the idea of a portable for multiple reasons.

Wasting dev times to optimize for a portable
Maybe even wasting man power for exclusive ps6 portables games instead of focusing only on ps6 home
A portable being the baseline hardware for their future games if they really want every game on both platforms, it is not jist a matter of rtx on off or reducing resolution and framerate, we are talking about fundamental core cuts to make run the game on a shitty tablet.

Maaaaany things can go wrong, this is definitely a series s situation, or even worse because a portable\handled is an even shittier hardware than a downgraded home console like series s.

I hope that shit bomb harder than concord and as fast as possible so devs don't waste time on it.

The low power mode is as much about native rendering with PT at 60fps and then upscaled/denoised as it is for handheld IMO

Unlike devs of say 20years ago that would have easily joined the dots about how console game footprints will change with Ai upscaling/denoising and heavy PT at native, it is no surprise that PlayStation are frustrated at the lack of ability to join said dots by current devs. IMO.

It's gonna flop so hard, it'll make the Vita look like a massive success, lmao
PS Portal, a secondary device based on cloud gaming only has probably sold over 5M consoles WW at this point (considering it had sold over 1.3M in the USA alone and that was before this fall). I don't see how this will flop, specially considering that it's just part of the PS6 family. It won't have its own games.

We can only hope it bomb as fast as possible.
Why exactly? Why would anyone want a device to flop in the first place?
edit: Nevermind, i read your second post.

"Maybe even wasting man power for exclusive ps6 portables games instead of focusing only on ps6 home" - They wouldn't call this PS6 Portable if it was gonna have exclusives. Sony isn't doing that anymore. They want multiple entry points for their games. Home console, portable console, cloud device (Portal), a few PC releases. That's their goal.

"A portable being the baseline hardware for their future games if they really want every game on both platforms, it is not jist a matter of rtx on off or reducing resolution and framerate, we are talking about fundamental core cuts to make run the game on a shitty tablet." - What are those "fundamental core cuts" you talke about? Mobile gaming is not what it once was. Imagine on a dedicated device. Look at Steam Deck. That piece of hardware has sold what...5M consoles? Doesn't it play almost everything released on Steam? Why doubt that about this device? This ain't the 2010's anymore.

Already explained multiple times in multiple topics.

Not sure why i should hope for its success when i actively hate everything a portable is gonna bring to the table.

It is not different than hoping that a gaas or any other game fails, not sure why you are perplexed.

I edited my post.

But holy shit..."i want this to flop because i hate everything about it it" sure is a way to live lol.

It is an absolutely normal response dude.

Are you so anal about all the people who also say that they hope all gaas games bombs? Or when most people were hoping for series s to bomb so devs didn't had to waste time optimizing for it, i bet you were perfectly ok with that...

They are freakin videogames, it is not that serious buddy.

they should,
it would make so much sense with the Series S already providing a low power mode that could be used for back compat of the handheld, without any dev having to add a special mode or do anything.

Right? It makes too much sense. If this leaks are to be believed, in order for PS6 handheld to work, it requires a patch or some effort from the developers. That's going to drastically affect the games available for PS6 at launch. Sony can't even get a 60 fps bloodborne patch out for a game they published.

Meanwhile, XSS is sitting right there, already low power mode, with access to games like Clair Obscur, Elden Ring, etc. XSS actually looking like a brilliant play by MS if they could capitalize on it.

Won't happen though, since the leadership at MS is a joke

Really looking forward to PS5 Pro getting FSR4/PSSR2 upgrades next year. Hopefully we'll get updates around spring time.

About the low power mode to possibly support PS6 handheld, they have an uphill battle if they expect publishers to patch all past games to create a meaningful BC playlist, that is really unlikely given that in the meantime many development teams have been disbanded or have just moved on, not to mention there is no financial incentive to allocate resources on that.
They need to find a way where the games can be forced to run on the handheld at the OS level, with some kind of internal performance analyzer that has control on resolutions at the very least.

Yes, it is pretty retarded to go around the place wanting everything that doesn't interests you to bomb. I don't know what surprises you about it.

Better make use of the "ignore thread" feature in the future rather than derailing threads with further baseless toxicity about the topic at hand.

Lmao the only thing retarded here is thinking that this is a reddit circlejerk with only positive opinions, go there if you want an hive mind :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

If i want to express my disappointement towards sony future strategies this is the perfect place, sorry bud.

I wonder if you had the same energy when people were hoping for every gaas or series s to fail...

Seems some users are struggling with your point of not wanting another series s situation. It's not hard to understand your issue with the handheld IF it does create another series s situation.

The funny thing is that you are not gonna find any of them defending series s in the infinite amount of tooics where almost all gaffers were shitting on the console.

They are not fooling anyone here...

Series S existence is good for consoles, I don't know why people is against that. It's the main reason many games are in some way optimized.

Which is why they won't mandate PS6 support. Power gap (mostly CPU) is to big for this to work seamessly.

They could mandate PS5 support though (for games released after the handheld release). Here the handheld has more memory than PS5 so every games should just work by halving the framerate (like in Demon's Souls) or reducting resolution (Days Gone). Framerate drops should be taken care by the VRR screen. Apparenlty for DF that's enough to make an 'impressive' (sub 30fps) game on a handheld so people shouldn't be worried.

Do you see games not playing on Steam Deck even if the are capable of being playable on the best PCs out there?

If they sell this as PS6 handheld, is going to be mandate. And that is good, that will force developers optimize their shit

I don't think Steam Deck is comparable in any way. The differences between a PS6 handheld and the desktop one will be much smaller than Steam Deck and a decent PC

Exactly. And do you see Steam Deck not playing those games that can also run in much better PC hardware?

Mark Cerny wouldn't let this flop. I'm sure he has a decent plan for this handheld. Thinking Sony would start nerfing their games because of a portal is insane.

PCs are not consoles. I think the concern here is that Sony might mandate some form of compatibility with this hand held which would essentially create another series s situation where games have to be compatible. That would be terrible for the end customer. If they made cost cutting efforts like the series s and using mobile technology.

Agree to disagree.

Best case scenario, devs waste time and money to optimize for a weaker hardware.

Worst case scenario, it lower devs ambitions because they need to make games able to run on an even weaker hardware than ps5 and sex.

If you think rockstar devs are happy to optimize gta6 for series s , then i have bridge to sell you...

Series s is just an headache for devs.

Even if they did (which they are not as far as I know) the issue with the Series S was that they cheaped out on RAM. Do you know if Canis has low RAM? Not really.

This is going to be a pretty successful, sorry for you.

If series S sold 10 to 15 million units is that successful?

And, do you consider the PS Vita a Success?
If this sells close to the PS vita, is it a success in your opinion?

Yeah the ram situation in the series S was a joke. It should have been 12GB minimum of full speed memory. Then it would have been a capable box, somewhat.

Afaik it was due to RAM situation
Most games are not CPU bound so it's not a big issue and GPU is scalable, especially if Canis will be 1080p console

The things that Sony preparing 2 years in advance show how serious they are, and they probably learned something from Series S situation. Mark like to make round of consultations with devs before designing hardware to make life easier for them (for benefits of all).

Successful like ps vita?

We can only hope.
Vita sold what in the end, 16M? that's 6Million more than what Steamdeck did.

The problem back then was Vita game support but those were different times. When the systems were completely different and ports more difficult.

Steamdeck selling 9 Million doesn't matter anymore because it's not the platform. it's a device that plays games made for a different "platform". Canis PS6 will be an auxiliary platform just like it. Think of it as like a PS Portal but with local game support too.

PSP was huge success for Sony

And with Vita Sony didn't have resources to fully support it (it was late PS3 gen during which Sony bleeded a lot and had to concentrate on very core of their business) and mobile was already on the rise for some indie/shovelware to be enough to keep platform afloat

Current situation is different - Sony is not in heavy competition fight with price war and heavy losses. Their home consoles business safe and sound, they have a lot of resources/money and management capacity to expand beyond it (overall market situation they are in much close to how they were at PSP launch than Vita launch)

Series S's effect on games would have been far more tolerable if there was an "Xbox Series P" handheld with the same specs.

I think you guys are confusing the situation, I dont think myself or GymWolf GymWolf are talking about if sony will see it as a success, we are talking about the potential implications it could have on developers and the end users experience being somewhat lessened IF Sony require some form of forced compatibility with this device. Like the Series S.

Cpu is what usually handle number of characters\enemies on screen, physics, ai, destruction etc.

I sincerely doubt less ram is a bigger problem than going from home console cpu to mobile cpu but ok.

The sad thing is that we are never gonna know what they cut in games to make it run on a portable because you only see the final result, but it is always gonna be in the back of my mind, that's enough for me to not want a damn ps6 portable.

Exactly, i'm not a sony shareholder, i'm the final client, who gives a fuck if this thing is gonna be successful or not? I only care for the home console games possibly being downgraded because of it.

There is also be a "Series S" style cheap home console with the same specs as PS6 Portable.

Why doesn't Microsoft actually make a true Xbox portable?

Xbox Series S is already the "low power" version of the Xbox. XSS uses 70W which is already lower than the 80W that PS5 low power is aiming for :pie_thinking:

Microsoft could have had a relatively easy win for a native handheld because the library is already there with Series S. 2nm chip probably gets them there...

Let's be clear about the "Series S situation". The problem wasn't the low specs, it was the memory configuration. Handhelds have functioned perfectly fine next to full-fledged PCs and they are not the same scenario.

Besides GymWolf GymWolf is just a grumpy old fart who doesn't get enough fiber.

If you already understand the Series S memory problems, why this concern about handhelds all of the sudden?

I don't like Sony but somehow I'm still intrigued by the idea of a PS6 handheld.

With regards to the whole hardware pricing disaster, I was crazy enough to order 16TB worth of nvme storage just to be safe..

Imagine with all the games Sony has been releasing from PS1 and PS2...plus if they finally get that PS3 native support rolling as well. Could be a great gen that finally unites all gens together.
I think that with Zen 6 they should have more than enough headroom to sort out their compatibility layer. Much higher clock frequency than PS3 cores, much higher performance per clock (advanced OoOE too), support for single pass AVX512 instructions, very large software controllable caches, etc… even GPU wise they should have more than enough headroom for brute force emulation (at a level they can use commercially, all the glitches free emulators may have that people gloss over / ignore would be magnified if Sony offered it commercially).

Assuming all this is true, the annoyed part shows how stupid these people are.
What do devs get to win from this? Can't you see most of them don't even release games in a steady state and instead put out patches months after release?

They are so detached from reality, it's not even funny anymore.

Devs get the chance of more people playing there game.

Most devs are already working with multiple platforms. Series S, Series X, Switch 2, Steamdeck, Steamcube, PS5/ PS5 Pro. Now its gonna be PS6 - PS6 Pro, Steamdeck 2.
