HBO's Last of Us Show Show Likely To End With Season 3 per HBO Boss

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Many are wondering if the upcoming third season of HBO's The Last of Us could be the show's final set of episodes, and that appears to be increasingly likely.

HBO programming boss Casey Bloys was asked by Deadline if the third season will be its last, and he replied, "It certainly seems that way." He didn't totally confirm anything, though, as Bloys went on to say, "On decisions like that, we defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them."

Season 3 is expected to premiere sometime in 2027, though HBO has yet to set an official date. Craig Mazin is the sole showrunner for Season 3, following the departure of Neil Druckmann.

lol. Probably because season 2 sucked. And they saw the drop off.

Turns out, tv audiences had even less patience to stick it out like gamers did. That coupled with terrible acting…. And a weaker script than the game….

I thought both season 1 and 2 were pretty good. Some episodes fell flat, but there were equally some episodes that were just incredible.

I assumed they'd wrap things up by season 3. I hope it's good.

Initially, I thought Neil had stepped away from the series because of the backlash; but after the news that came out of ND I think it was more about the state of development for their current projects and the series was just collateral damage.

They first said that it would be at least 4 seasons, the second game being split into three fucking seasons. After the collapse that was the second one they decided that it's better to stop at three.

They probably even were thinking of doing more, expecting an third game, but now it looks like this franchise is dead forever even in gaming.

From what people understood, he was called back to Interstellar because it was taking forever. I mean, the main producer is trying to be an hollywood star and failing at it, let him fail at what he is "good" at.

You wouldn't say that to her face

First season had a couple good episodes but overall redundant and poorly done compared to the game, I didn't even bother watching season 2. Glad I didn't invest more time if they are going to end it like this.

Another universe with great potential, wasted and unlikely to leave a lasting impression on people's minds.
It may take 30–50 years before a new generation of creative minds revisits it and draws inspiration from some of its elements—just as contemporary creators now draw inspiration from older films.
Until then, goodbye. You added no real value to my life.

You eliminate a huge part of the good will without the "at least the gameplay and graphics are top notch" excuse

Thinking this godawful dogshit story (after part 1) had any merit to be on a tv show was peak delusion by the producers. That probably dont even played the games. The disastrous casting didnt helped either

This show will go down in history as one of the biggest letdowns of all time and it all started from the writing room.

Jesus fuck they had momentum when HBO announced they had Chernobyl creator writing the show with Druckmann who both had actually played the game and therefore should have realized what made the game special. Yet throughout the season we probably had less than 1/3 scenes in the show about Joel and Ellie.

There were just too many filler characters and too much screentime for side characters who no one gave a fuck about. No one cared about Frank, Anna, Marlene, the weak lady leader etc who all got way too much screentime when they should have just focused on Ellie and Joel dynamic. But even that wouldn't have been enough to save the show.

When you look back Pedro Pascal was almost as bad casting choice as Bella Ramsey. This show really needed someone else to play Joel, Pedro was too known actor and just couldn't turn into this gruffy protagonist from his other roles. He couldn't even grow a proper beard since his face probably needed to be clean for the next 5 movies he had to shoot at the same time as this show. They needed someone who had all the time in the world to shoot the scenes needed. Pedro just came for the paycheck and off he went.

They also dropped the ball when it came soundtrack. TLOU has one of the best used soundtracks in cutscenes yet in the show they felt like those scenes were better with different music or no music at all. Fuck you.

Oh well, at least there is always the game.

Season 2 killed it. They should have known the terrible story line was going to ruin the show but what can they really do.

Season 2 was Poorly written and just shite tbh

Season 2 was always going to kill the show and every single person with two brain cells knew it.

The second game's story wasn't just bad, it was horrendous. They should have just realised that and taken the show in a completely different direction.

It was so obvious.

Neil thought he had a great story that could translate into an ambitious TV show and... nope. You can make a great videogame with TLOU story but not a good series, because it lacks a consistent worldbuilding and appealing characters other than the protagonists. TLOU has cool zombies but that goes nowhere. There are no more plots and subplots than the angry lesbian drama. In what world they thought that would work. Again, just compare this show to TWD and its set of great characters. ND is a decent game director but has zero talent as a writer. I fear what his ego may have done to something like Intergalactic.

Season 2 had the same problem as the game IMO. They took away the central dynamic that made TLOU1 work so well (Ellie + Joel) and replaced it with a bunch of new ones that, while not necessarily bad, just aren't as compelling.
But unlike the game they also had to deal with a miscast Ellie. Bella worked decently in S1 but couldn't pull off the Ellie from TLOU2

Last of Us show had so much potential but the casting is one of the biggest fuck-ups in TV history. To think we could've had Cailee Spaeny as Ellie.

The only issue I foresee there is that she would have made a good Season 2 Ellie, but not a good Season 1 Ellie.

I don't think I had ever cringed so much from TV or film before. Even before the memes. So bad lol.

Actually, worse than Halo show just for that moment.

Seriously. Fallout is fucking great, I love it.
Best video game adaptation since SF2 the animated movie.

I called this, it seemed predictable it would go in this direction. They can easily wrap this up in a 10 episode final season and with Joel gone from the show there's no way the new focus would keep the viewer's interest until 2029. Season 2 was a sizeable drop off in quality from season 1. I say 7 episodes of Abby and 3 episodes of Homestead/Santa Monica to wrap this thing up.

This will be hardly good without Druckmann.
Yeah....its funny how people blamed Druckmann for everything that went wrong with the show.

It's somehow has escaped everyones notice that Craig Maizen (the showrunner) directed and wrote all the worst season 2 episodes.

And I bet he cast Bella Ramsey

First Season was serviceable at best, they ruined Bill as character in order to make your typical gay love story with a happy ending that contrast so bad with its world

Pedro Pascal carried the season and his version of Joel is totally a wus compared to game Joel

Then the series crashed and burned by making the same mistake as the game, so this was totally avoidable, but their egos couldn't handle the reality: TLOU2 was bad and killing Joel killed the franchise

My friend, who's not a gamer, when he started watching it: "Pedro Pascal is REALLY good in this."

I just smiled and nodded.

It's like the HBO execs didn't even know the story progression.
