Max Payne 3 Review Thread

The armored dudes just require precise headshots. One to lop off the helmet and another for a direct dome shot. Of course they'll be spongey if you hit them straight on, and I'm sure many are doing this with a soft or hard lock which target the body only anyway. Uncharted was like this too unless you WENT FOR DEM DOME HITS.

<watches GT review>

WTF...WTF did they do Max Payne? Where are the fun comic panels? The over the top metaphors? Instead we get goofy ass visual effects and random words thrown on the screen?

I am sad. Very, very sad. =(

Wait, so this isn't 10/10 goty!?

This was going to be my first 2012 game I buy, but it looks like it'll probably end up being Assassin's Creed III.

Its hard to tell from the Gametrailers video whether that enemy was wearing a flak vest or not. Maybe. Probably. But he did shrug off a point blank burst from an AK like it wasn't much.

SO how much of a one trick pony is this game? These reviews, even the good ones, get me a bit worried.

DOn't get me wrong, it looks soooo freaking awesome that it's a must buy for me, but i can imagine that it will get repetitive fast.

Even with it not being a good max payne game (story wise), the multiplayer still looks great. Is there any video showing all the skills and weapons yet?

Say whatever you want to say but if this isnt some of the coolest shit you can do in a videogame these days then I dont know what is. It's Max goddamn Payne!!!

Gives me an awesome Collateral feeling.. mixing Mann with Payne isn't necessarily a very bad thing, although the effects are overused in cutscenes.

Oh god I saw it, but I stopped. At least now I have an idea of how to get that VIP trophy =D Shit'll be a bitch on free aim.

There is a tiny representation of Max in the lower right. Your eyeballs meanwhile are glued to the carnage in your crosshairs. I would agree that no health indication can get frustrating. Always hated the abrupt deaths in MP1/2 because I was paying attention to the action and not the painkiller meter.

Hopefully there is sufficient rumble queue to let me know my shit is about to die.

Rubbish. We've been able to look at health meters far smaller and less concise for years and all of a sudden, we spawn a generation of people that aren't able to move their eyes across a screen?

Oh wait so you actually like missions where there's no checkpoint in front of the action so you have to drive all the way over to the other island, but you die in the middle of a firefight at your destination, you want to drive all the way over there again? Fuck that.

I agree about GTAIV being worse than previous gta games tho.

mechanically though? i get people who think San Andreas or Vice City are better games than GTA4, even though i disagree, but i don't think you can argue that they are mechanically better. the shooting in GTA4 isn't top tier, but it's much better than the crap we had before... and the driving is vastly improved.

if you want to compare it to 3 there isn't a single metric outside of 'atmosphere' and 'story' where you could say 3 was better with a straight face.

*mechanically* there is no way GTA3 is better than 4. you are allowed to prefer it, but it you are trying to say that the gameplay and world mechanics are better, they are not.

Seriously? First people are saying its too long and now they don't want to move their eyes? WTF. LOL.

Always-Honest, dynamic AI my friend. Dynamic AI. It's supposed to change all. the. time. Every playthrough is supposedly different and enemies will react differently. Houser said so (if he's wrong, let's sue his ass).

Screw the haters, I love the HUD. It would really feel off if you were missing that grey silhouette with some sort of pill bottle icon.

If you're talking about where the review said "Enemies shrug off bullets like insect bites" the guy REACTS to Max's bullets hitting him even though he didn't die which is TONS better than anything in Uncharted 3. Hell, even the clip at 4:22 in that review the guy is clearly wearing body armor, but his head and legs are exposed and I'm willing to bet he reacts if shot there.

I'm not taking that complaint seriously until I get my hands on the game. They probably DID just use soft-lock aiming which puts your reticle PRECISELY on the armor and would give the impression of a sponge.

Just watched the Giant Bomb quick look and I'm probably going to put off picking this up for awhile. Looks fun but doesn't really look like something I need to play Day 1.

i was sooo happy to see the game didn't have regenerating health, and that it still had the classic HUD. haters gonna hate and all that.

Yup and no fucking red bloodstains all over the screen.. THANK GOD.

Where is a pic of the ME2 bloodlines when you need it, I was searching for it yesterday.

Guys def react when shot in the leg. Imagine just seeing an armored guy and unloading dual Desert Eagles into one of his kneecaps.

He'd probably go down. Let's see you sponge that, bitch.

Still great reviews that don't detract at all from wanting to play this damn game.

So does this mean no GOTY edition? =/

Dude, we'll get a GOTY or Complete Edition for sure. We got one for L.A. (Not R* I know), RDR, AND GTA. I'm sure we will for this too. One that will include that 30 dollar DLC package theyre selling now absolutlely.

In Uncharted 3, enemies did not respond to your fire. They were just sponge bullets. The armored plated ones just had a reason to be other than bad game design.

I watched the Gametrailers one. I'm not understanding the "I never played this game, but they are wrong outrage!". Most of what they say seems pretty fair. Me, I'd deduct more for gameplay faults. If you dive down and get locked into an animation that forces you to stand up. So enemies can target you freely. Sounds like bullshit already. On top of the style looking like absolute shit. The tint and words flashing across for a cutscene heavy game. And other complaints too that people have brought up in this thread. It seems like they want the grit of the first two titles without any of the charm.

Why does it have to be such extremes? I'm not saying plaster the screen with red jelly, but there is also something to be said about delivering a more elegant solution that maintains focus on the action instead of managing an arbitrary healthbar with potions. Neither of those options you are concluding are appealing, as both tend to be disruptful to the game experience. Tactile rumble as an indicator is what I proposed(and I am hopeful for), but condemning a "generation of gamers" for seeking a middleground? FFS

Oh, tactile rumble on my keyboard? Nice.

If you dove into a wall shooting some guys and crashed your side into it, don't you think you'd need a couple seconds to gain your bearings before you started firing at least somewhat accurately again? I'd think my opponents would see that as an easy time to take you down. You watched someone shootdodge at a moment when they shouldnt have. Me? If I'm gonna shootdodge, Ill do it when theres one or two guys around and depending on their distance from each other until I'd get more acclimated to the controls and free aim.

Yes, let's criticize a totally optional mechanic because I decided to use it and dive into a group, or behind something which BLOCKS MY LINE OF SIGHT, knowing the drawback of said mechanic is that I need to get up.

Let's complain that Max has to take any damage at all while we're at it. WHY ENEMIES GOTS TO SHOOT BACK?

as i understand you can stay on the ground shooting if you want... but how is it bullshit that you are a sitting duck when climbing back to your feet? if you've played the first two, and if you think logically, diving onto the ground out in the open when lots of enemies is still active is the kind of stupid move that SHOULD make you a sitting duck.

shoot dodging is something you do into cover, or when there are only a couple of enemies left. logically. doing it out in the open when there are multiple enemies still around is going to get you killed and you shouldn't expect anything else.

Not really when diving is a risk you take, you dont HAVE to stand up, you can stay on the ground and keep shooting I think as long as you have one handed weapons equipped.

Some reviewers probably just sucked at this game. Played it on softlock or hardlock or whatever. Either way there may be some faults with this game but it is probably an amazing game nonetheless.

Yup don't shootdodge into a group of enemy's if you're exposed and you're not sure you can kill them all in one go.

Can you shoot dodge and get up behind cover? It'll be cool to shoot dodge from cover to cover but if I have to expose myself every time behind a waist high object, then it might invalidate that strategy.

A red border around the screen should be enough. It's not offensively obtrusive. As long as it doesn't impede your view of the action, I don't understand why people are dead set against visual effects as an indicator of health.

No, because that would make you near invincible. The CON of shootdoging is that you're vulnerable while getting up. YOU, as a player, decide if it's worth the risk. You can always activate bullet time on the run.

because some of us take screenshots, and that shit is ugly.

Its a rockstar game. You pretty much know what to expect as far as comparisons goes.

it could be just me, but for GTA 4 I found that both versions had benefits the other was missing.

As long as its remotely comparable in regards to frame rate and screen tearing, I'll be ok choosing the PS3 version.

THANK FUCK they don't have those stupid screen effects when low on health. Fucking hated that in Red Dead. Yes, I know I'm low on health, don't fucking make it worse by limiting my vision with this red FUCKING screen.

The most they should've done is have the Max silhouette pulsate a bit when the blood is at his neck. All the screen fading, blood jelly everywhere, black white stuff is annoying as hell. If it's between that + what we have now, I'd rather just keep my eye on my health without any obtrusive indication.

EDIT: Thought I was in the Max Payne 3 thread so excuse the post below but figured I'd leave it. Lovely. Reviews seem mixed levels of positiveness from good to great to amazing but I'm excited.

How will MP work with crews (and the NeoGang)?

I want to play with some neogaffers tomorrow but I don't have any on my friend's list. Will an option appear for people in the crew to join each other? How will it work?

Anyone want to add me on Xbox Live so I can have some friends with Max Payne?

You do know that(at least in good games) the animations and characters are based on the actors that voice them.

Basically you're butchering all that work, intention and feel to the characters and dialogues by dubbing it. No matter how well it's dubbed.

Hahahahaha, yeah, like jessica chobot, am I right?

LOLOLOL, we have the movies and series here dubbed by great dubbing actors that some of the time even superpass the original voices, and that is THE actor you are watching in screen, not a shitty 3D model suppose to be him, thats most of the time when they try to do that in videogames.
Things are dubbed here ALWAYS (apart from videogames, and those are dubbed also a lot), all media. We have great dubbing actors that are as capable as normal ones, and in my country some of them have their famous voices so linked to famous american actors, and are so good, people LOVE them.
Even like that, videogames are more like and cartoon and it doesnt mean shit theyve get someone to recreate mildly their face for a character, most of the time they dont evn look the same, so having a different voice makes your point moot.

If you dont want to hear voices in the shitty dubs done by you contries play with the original, theres other countries were we have great dubbing actors and we would prefer if the game came dubbed in our language with the option to change it, thank you very much.

As people will allways cry when other people talk about the option of dubbing a game im outta here. You can continue to hate options.

See, young gamers nowadays are dumb, can't concentrate on anything for long periods of time and like bright, shiny stuff.

Gladly Rockstar didn't dumb the game down. At least not in that aspect.

Didn't even finish reading the post because your first couple of sentences made you look like a moron.

I just stopped reading when he mentioned the Jessica Chobot shit from ME3. MP3 is a little different, Rockstar actually put effort into the animations here. Dubbing it would ruin stuff like the lip syncing.

Moving on, I've seen a bunch of different videos of the same few early missions (up to the stadium level), each time the AI reacts differently, and the Euphoria physics continue to impress the hell out of me. Pretty much one of the best bits of new tech introduced this gen IMO. Looks like it'll be at least as replayable as the second game, which I played the shit out of. Even noticed that Max's shirt in the stadium level gradually gets more drenched in sweat. Nice attention to detail.

And apparently he does not know how character animation/voice acting works.
