Exactly.
How often does a Decathlon athlete perform well enough to medal in individual events?
except not. top 10 olympic medalist has 4 swimmers.
Exactly.
Ha, my BBC stream's are buffering like crazy now too... bet they're probably getting killed from all the extra Americans/Canadians hopping on to watch.
Please stop ending everything with "PEACE." ._.

The reason why you can compare the swimming strokes and not compared the field and other track events is look at the bodies of the athletes. Swimmers who do the shorter distances all look the same. Track is far more specialized.
How do you guys watch the BBC stream? It pauses and buffers for minutes at a time...
If it was possible for them to compete in both the decathlon and all the other events simultaneously without dying, or if the decathlon followed the "one event per day" scheme, that number would probably be pretty respectable.
Nope not even close. It's silly to compare difficulty of sports and even sillier to comment on a sport you know nothing about.
This. I'm not saying it doesn't take hard work and skill to master the different strokes but the degree of specialization in the track and field events are much higher. And the sport is much more accessible so I'm going to have my bias for it admittedly.
nobody thinks winning 8 gold medals is easy but it is proximately a 1000th time easier than winning 8 track and field medals in one year.
Exactly.
I always thought of decathletes as being failed track and field athletes, to be honest.
Kind of how shit tennis players go over to doubles.
Exactly. Especially when your comments make cheapen someone else's accomplishments/sport.Nope not even close. It's silly to compare difficulty of sports and even sillier to comment on a sport you know nothing about.
And why does that matter?

And why does that matter? What part of that makes swimming "ridiculous" (your own words)?
Hey guys, I have a question I hope someone can answer. So I'm watching Olympic soccer and it got me wondering just how seriously the teams were taking the games. I mean, I imagine winning the World Cup is the penultimate goal of a soccer player, not winning the gold medal. Similarly, the U.S. basketball team will (presumably?) care little for getting a gold medal as much as they do winning the NBA Finals.
So exactly how seriously are the Olympics taken when the sport is superseded by a professional sports league? Is anyone going to risk playing injured when they need to be 100% a year or two from now?
In talking about who was more impressive in 2008, it matters because sane people will say it is Bolt. Bolt does not have the build for a 100m yet he massacred the competition and made people look stupid and then beat a record that many thought would not be broken in the 200.
too many too similar events.

Well, they're not proper football teams playing. It's under 23's with three senior players.
As in 'how serious is it being taken', depends on the team.
Why is one of the players in each volleyball team wearing different coloured kits?
Oh wow, embarrassing loss for GBR coming up in Handball.
I was taught that too, but I don't think there's too much science behind that advice. When lifting I was always told to not lock my joints but these poor men and woman got to lock their arms with so much weight. Jesus.
great lift from that 18 year old from Azerbaijan
Why do you care? You don't have to watch them all.
