I am just watching a replay of the women's 53kg weightlifing, and wow did they manage to fuck things up horribly at the start. They put the wrong weight on the bar for a girl, their graphics are constantly incorrect, they call out the wrong lifter, they give one chick an extra lift because of their earlier error and then, while she is preparing to lift, she notes that the time is not ticking down and they proceed to change their minds and not give her a fourth makeup lift. It's a total mess.

you seem incredibly on edge with every post in this thread

i dunno what country you rep but it's probably a loser one
Imperalism introduced those sports but it doesn't force anyone to enjoy them, so your point is irrelevant.

As for what you just mentioned: Yes, I am an angry and abrasive man. That is thanks to intense self-hatred conditioned into me by dipshits who regularly beat the idea of my own inferiority into me over many years. Because of that I see athletes failing to secure a medal to be completely unacceptable (even though I logically understand that qualifying makes them vastly more athletic and physically talented than me).

When the Olympics happen, you hear European players talk about how a Medal means more to them than a Stanley Cup. IIHF exists, but it's not anywhere near as important as the Olympics to the players or the fans.

Sure, but hockey is not nearly as popular as basketball. I'd say that it's a safe bet that if sufficiently promoted, the FIBA World Cup will be wildly successful. Basketball and soccer share a lot of universally appealing common traits that something like hockey doesn't, mostly in cost of entry and being lighter-contact sports. Obviously FIFA can stand on its own because soccer is so ubiquitous, but people that don't think that FIBA can do the same are probably grossly underestimating the growth and popularity of basketball across the globe.

I was giving an example of intl tourneys not always outdrawing the Olympics. You can make a FIBA tourney, but the Olympics has a built-in fanbase, and the World Cup has a hundred years of history. Excitement for a FIBA World Cup may take decades to develop.

And I'll just quote this again.

According to FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann, the TV ratings for the 2010 championship exceeded the 2006 FIBA World Championship's and the EuroBasket 2009 numbers, with an expected audience of one billion people in 200 countries, while 30 million people visited the official website.

The preliminary round game between China and Greece was watched by around 65 million Chinese, while the three games of Lithuania topped the annual ratings in Lithuania, beating the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final.

FIFA >>>> Olympics
FIBA <<<<< Olympics

The olympic futbol events could be on the same tier as FIFA if they dropped the U23 requirement.

I was under the impression for the longest time that there wasn't an Olympic event for futbol. What is U23...? I thought they separated the soccer event out from the Olympics awhile ago.

Under age 23 except 3 senior players.

What they are proposing would still allow plenty of NBA stars to play in the Olympics.

Under 23, as in years old. There are 3 exceptions per team. It looks like Olympic basketball will be adopting that same requirement soon.

The age restriction for Olympic football is just dumb but then again I suppose if every country fielded a fully professional team we'd have what would basically be two world cup competitions.

The shitty thing is NBA and team owners are trying to run Basketball World Cup by themselves to get 100% profits instead of sharing with FIBA.

That's the biggest difference between NBA basketball and football actually. In football there arent any owners who want to make a profit; every cent the club earns (or loans...) gets reinvested into the team. Football is a still a sport (at least to some degree) whereas in the NBA everybody is talking about revenues and profits.

I would personally love to see Cricket included in future Olympics.

T20 format would certainly be ideal.

cricket isn't really a 'world sport' - really only australia/england/pakistan/india/sri lanka take it seriously. same reason baseball isn't an olympic event - only the states/canada/japan play it (generalising in both cases but you know what i mean).

Should have had Chinese idols.

Are you a Table Tennis fan? I find it boring and monotonous the way that Asians play Table Tennis, although I must admit it works for them and they have become extremely efficient at it.
Not long ago Sweden had the best players in the world, ask any Chinese table tennis player who might be the best player in the world and the answer might surprise you.
But yeah Sweden dominance in the game has passed and Asian countries are again back to the top, I hope Germany's Timo Boll does something, but I don't think it's going to happen, China should take top 3, South Korea might take one spot too, they have awesome players as well

There are plenty of ways to develop young players, if they didn't already exist then we wouldn't have new professional players at all.

There are international competitions for youth, but the Olympics are a great way to put them in the spotlight.

And it's impossible to use the regular teams when the Olympics and Euro Cup take place in the same year.

17 teams is more than enough:

India
New Zealand
England
South Africa
West Indies
Sri Lanka
Pakistan
Bangladesh
Zimbabwe
Australia
Kenya
Scotland
Netherlands
Ireland
Canada
Bermuda
Afghanistan

These replays I'm trying to watch keep linking me to the wrong shit.

Just tried to watch the replay of the Women's 3M diving thing ..... and it brings me to Boxing (AUS vs CHN)???

Wtf.

This happen to anyone else?

Kept trying to watch the USA vs. France Basketball game and it kept linking me to another team's replay earlier ...

The reason I don't think the Basketball WC could be as big as the Olympics is because when it's a stand alone event, the fact that one team is pretty much guaranteed to win the Gold Medal makes it pretty boring.

It's really interesting reading about sports in/out of the Olympics.

In 2009 when Golf and Rugby 7's were voted in, Softball, Squash, Baseball, Karate and 'roller sports' were all bidding to be included.

Apparently the governing bodies for Cricket, Rock climbing (da fuck) and Powerboating are 'Olympic-recognised' but have not made any bids.

I guess they do bids every four years, so they will add more sports next year?
