Water polo is really rough, there are a lot of cheap shots between players under the water which the referees obviously can't see.

I don't know how the system works exactly in badminton, but something is wrong if the best teams want to lose in the last match.

Usually the best teams are at the top at the end in their group and will player weaker teams (in most sports with a pool-system).

They should all play at the same time + don't know who they will play next in the elimination phase.

That was what caused the problem though. The chinese favourites had a shock defeat which meant they finished second in their group - so the winner of the other match would face a strong opponent.

Water polo is really rough, there are a lot of cheap shots between players under the water which the referees obviously can't see.

Yeah been watching a while and some players being tugged at etc kind of violently but nothing seems to come of it

The ref walked onto the floor and warned them multiple times to stop it. You can't have that many warnings and expect to get away with something.

Yes, the dumb rules are what triggered this behaviour, but the Olympics have to send a clear message: warnings carry consequences.
