Can someone explain Olympic boxing to me? Do these contestants compete on those PPV events? Like, if Pacquio still boxed, would he compete in the Olympics?

Olympic boxing is still amateur, but promoters are there to pick the best talent to turn pro eventually.

Man, the quads on these weightlifters must be absolutely ridiculous. To have to squat that weight before lifting it up is just mind-blowing.

Which is what happened with the British boxer Amir Khan after his silver medal win at the 2004 Olympics.

It almost worked too till people found out he had no chin :[ a few clean hits and hes down for the count

I think US v Turkey baskeball is starting now, womens, both 2-0 in groups so should be a good one

Sometimes the shots they block aren't even hard spikes though. It just seems like the conversion rate on blocks is terribly low. Could be the alternative is even lower, but that's hard to believe.

Basically your question is like asking why, in an American football game, the defensive line always tries to sack the quarterback on pass plays even though they rarely get any actual sacks. It is all about putting pressure on the QB and not letting him just do whatever he wants to do because, as a full on professional quarterback, if you let him take his time he will annihilate you.

Same basic thing here: especially at this level of competition if you let the other side place the ball at essentially any speed, angle, and location on the court they want to you will basically lose the point by default.

I really don't. Only watched the football so far. Just find the American attitude funny.

What your post about Americans focusing on one sport (they don't) and the Phelps jab tells me is you are one of those fans that really does care but just plays it off when the people they are rooting for lose or don't do well.

You can't post something that venomous and not care. Impossible.

The Koreans can call some of their archers to shoot the ball before it hits the ground if it gets out of their player's reach.

Ahhh okay. Interesting.

I think there are rumours to allow professionals into the Olympics in 2016 at Rio. Not sure how much truth there is to it though.

Why should professional tennis players/footballers/basketball players etc be allowed to complete but not pro boxers?

I think they should unify the entry requirements across all sports and keep the same rules as they do in football, and allow u23 pros to compete.

The ref gave out warnings to both players for hardly anything. So much so that a guy got disqualified for 3 offences. The other boxer had 2!

What's going on in the boxing? I just heard a buncha boos coming from the TV and the commentators saying stuff.

Holding apparently...but the problem was the Cuban would go low and swoop up and the Iranian didn't know how to deal with it...

Pretty damn harsh tbh from the ref...

Haha this Italian boxer wins by walkover because the other guy didn't show up for weigh in in the morning!

This boxing is hilarious to watch. It's going to be a fun couple of hours.

Like I say, I said one innocuous comment about finding it funny, it got jumped upon so I posted in reply. I can genuinely tell you now I haven't watched one sport apart from football and didn't really want the Olympics here in the first place. I really don't give a shit how GB are doing and how USA are doing, but the triumphant attitude from a lot of Americans is funny.

I hope after that match you guys realized why volleyball>>>beach volley. Faster, more variety, amazing rallies.

More women to watch

needs a calm down? haha

I don't think the Olympics are that big a deal, why I thought finding it funny that the large majority of medals are in one category would lead to a lot of crying I don't know.

Because it was unnecessary? petty? and written in a way that specifically was designed to get a rise out of people? All while you pretend that the Olympics don't matter and you don't really care?

And you wonder? My guess.....you know you are only here posting to bait people.

He's not like that at all, he often posts how gutted he is in the footy thread

Due mainly to him supporting a shit team he is used to failure this year

We had this 4 years ago in beijing, there was alot of defensive posturing then as well.

lol. He just walked into the ring and walked out again.

Wtf is going on in the boxing. Is the officiating amateur, too?

It's perfectly understanding that someone would downplay the importance of the Olympics when their country is doing terrible, and also find an outlet to downplay the Americans success.
